Notable historical aspects relating to the etiology and treatment of pes cavus have been critically examined. The characteristic features of the deformity are described and an explanation offered for the mechanism of their production. Although its etiology remains uncertain, a study of the literature and a great deal of clinical material has established certain well supported conclusions regarding the etiology and pathology of the condition. Certain aspects of cerebral palsy serve to strengthen impressions of earlier authors that the primary center of origin of pes cavus lies somewhere in the

A case of typical haemophilia A in phenotypically "hairless" women aged 18 with complete testicular feminization (primary amenorrhea, absence of palpated gonads, negative sex chromatin, fluorescence of Y chromosome in interphase nuclei, caryotype 46, XY by common and fluorescent methods) is reported in this paper. Both diseases are of familial character with transmission through female line. The propositus' father did not suffer from haemophilia. Signs of Morris syndrome (delay of menses, absence of secondary hair) are present in the propositus' mother and sister. The propositus' niece, the da

Tarsal degenerative joint disease (DJD) in 27 cattle was classified as primary or secondary based on age, joint conformation defects, faulty hindlimb alignment, or history of trauma to the affected joint(s). Results of blood and synovial fluid analysis for cattle affected with primary or secondary tarsal DJD were grouped in compilation of data. Cattle with tarsal DJD had significantly (P smaller than 0.01) reduced hemoglobin (Hb) content in comparison to that in control cattle. There was highly significant (P smaller than 0.001) reduction in packed cell volume (PCV). A significant difference w

The pathogenesis of metatarsus varus was investigated by a series of dissections of 14 normal feet of stillborn or infants who died during the perinatal period. The deformity could not be produced without the surgical incisions described below. A valgus position of the hindfoot was produced by maximal dorsiflexion of the foot. The deformity of the fore part of the foot could not be produced even by extreme traction on the tibialis anterior tendon even after capsulotomy of the first tarsometatarsal joint. Only extensive capsulotomies in the tarsometatarsal joints distal to the joint of Chopart

A case of osteoarthritis in the TMJ which manifested clinical symptoms, radiographic changes, and the classic microscopic alterations has been presented. Whether the condition was a primary or secondary form of the disease could not be unequivocally ascertained, as the symptoms preceded the injection of a sclerosing solution and a mandibular fracture, both of which could be significant contributing factors to a trauma-induced secondary osteoarthritic change. Nevertherless, a lack of symptoms in other joints would tend to exclude a generalized (primary) form of osteoarthropathy. In this regard,

Problems related to rheumatoid arthritis have been investigated by a group at Cambridge using the organ culture technique. Since auto-allergic reactions may be concerned in the chronicity of the disease, the effects of reactive complement-sufficient antisera (AS+C') on embryonic and post-foetal cartilage were examined. The cartilaginous limb bone rudiments enlarged to several times their original volume in control medium, but in the presence of AS+C' they gradually disintegrated, owing to the breakdown of the cartilage matrix; only the superficial cells of the enveloping soft connective tissue

Ninety-three patients with a variety of joint diseases were studied for evidence of immune complexes in articular collagenous tissues. Frozen sections of freshly obtained biopsies of hyaline articular cartilage and menisci were stained with fluoresceinated monospecific antisera for evidence of human immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM,IgA) and the beta1c component of complement. The criterion for the presence of complexes was the staining of two or more immunoglobulins and beta1c in an identical location of sequentially cut sections. Of the 42 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) 83% were positive by

The authors analysed radiograms of the hands of 50 patients suffering from primary articular chondrocalcinosis (ACC) and compared them with those of 100 control subjects of similar sex and age. There were 40 women and 10 men, with an average age of 69.6 years (plus or minus 9.82). A chalky incrustation of the semilunar pyramidal interspace was observed in 40 percent of cases. The frequency of this incrustation was next in order of importance to incrustation of the triangular ligament which occurred in 52 percent of cases. The difference from the controls was highly significant (p less than 0.0

Five cases of early-onset gouty arthritis are presented, with roentgenographic abnormalities evident in the first two decades of life. Three patients suffered from "primary" gout; classification of the other two patients was difficlut because of associated mental retardation, hypothyroidism and psoriasis. Radiographic alterations included soft-tissue masses and calcification, with typical erosive abnormalities and predilection for the hands and feet. The sacroiliac joints were abnormal in two patients.

Gout may present in such atypical forms as "primary-chronic", "masked", or "asymptomatic gout at all stages affecting almost any joint. These uncharacteristic presentations were found in 22 out of 124 patients observed. The disease of 4 patients is described as casuistics. Important conclusions of practical use for early diagnosis and early treatment are drawn. Every arthropathy in a male where the diagnosis is not certain, must be suspected as being due to gout. The diagnosis can be assured by detecting urate deposits in the tissue. Determinations of the serum uric acid level can only be indi

A radiological review of two groups of intertrochanteric osteotomies of the femur for primary osteoarthritis of the hip has been made. Each group oroginally consisted of forty-one hips. In one group a Wainwright straight V-spline without compression had been used for fixation, and in the other group an AO angled plate with compression. The time for bony union was equal in the two groups but the incidence of non-union was lower in the AO group. Regression of cysts and of bone sclerosis was more frequent in the Wainwright group, possible as a consequence of the greater medial displacement and va

Based on our results with high tibia osteotomy for gonarthrosis in 96 knees, the type of primary deformity was found to significantly influence the patient's subjective assessment of the results. Knees with valgus deformity secondary to changes in other joints are not suitable for correction by HTO. Knees with varus deformity exceeding 10 degrees and with roentgenological signs of reduction of the medial tibial condyle are seldom corrected by HTO and the results in these knees are poor. There is a clear correlation between patient's satisfaction with HTO done for gonarthrosis and the correctio

This is a report of 3 cases in which a primary infection in a site other than a total hip led to infection in the hip itself. One hip infection appeared to arise in a tooth abscess, a second in the urinary tract, and one from the respiratory tract. All infections resulted in the necessity of removing the components of the total hip. It is suggested that patients who have had previous total hip replacement should be warned to consult their physician when the possibility of an infection is present, and that antibiotic coverage be given during this period of time. Cultures of infected sites shoul

A retrospective study was carried out to determine what were the features of either success or failure of intertrochanteric osteotomy of the hip for degenerative hip disease. Seventy-three patients (78 hips) were reviewed clinically and roentgenographically with a follow-up of two to 12 years. The hips were classified into the superior, medial and intermediate types of the primary degenerative hip disease and into the dysplastic and coxa magna variety for the secondary degenerative hip disease and then further classified into Stage I and Stage II. Stage I was defined by the roentgenographic cr

Two rare forms of sporotrichosis were seen in one hospital within a two-year period. One, a case of primary sporotrichosis of the lung, represents the eighth case on record, to our knowledge. The other, a case of articular sporotrichosis, is not as rare, but is still uncommon manifestation of the disease. The problems in management of these two patients are of interest because of the challenge of conventional concepts of therapy.

Joint and bone lesions in growing pigs are described on the basis of post-mortem examination of 341 gilts, boars or castrates from 10 to 120 kg live weight, and 869 separate bones from pigs between 80 and 115 kg live weight at slaughter. No evidence of rickets or generalized osteodystrophia fibrosa was found. Lesions occurred in both sexes. The typical osteochondral lesions were most often symmetrical, occurred at certain sites in joints and epiphyseal plates and were most obvious in the elbow and stifle joint, and in the distal epiphyseal plate of the ulna. Lesions of varying degree could be

In a radiological study of the pubic symphysis in 37 athletes (26 footballers and 11 others) and 156 young men as controls changes similar to those of osteitis pubis were found in 19 (76%) of the footballers and nine of the other athletes (81%) and 70 of the controls (45%). In the controls there was a significant correlation between their athletic ability and these changes. The clinical features consist of pain in the region of the pubis which may radiate to the groin or lower abdomen. Clicking may be present and indicates instability. Local tenderness is the only significant sign. Radiographs

Although congenital subluxation of the hip is an important primary abnormality, upon which OA hip may later supervene, other factors may also be important in individual patients. When osteoarthritis is seen with subluxation, it probably represents congenital subluxation and not displacement of the femoral head secondary to remodelling. Osteoarthritis in these cases is usually superolateral or supermedial in type, with the major impact of the disease in the superior articular cartilage. A similar form of osteoarthritis is seen in cases where leg-length disparity exists, with or without the pres

Abstract A 9-year-old boy fell ill with respiratory symptoms and high fever, followed after a day or so by acute pleuritis. A classical Wissler's syndrome developed with altogether 3 attacks of high fever within the course of a month, various forms of exanthema on 2 occasions, arthritis in knee-joint, leucocytosis with eosinophilia attaining an extreme degree, and a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Blood cultures were negative; and, through extensive bacteriological tests and serological reactions, infections with various bacteria, mycoplasma, psittacosis agent and ordinary respiratory vir

The clinical and pathological details of a case of ataxia in a 3-month-old colt are described. A marked protrusion into the vertebral canal of the body of the 3rd cervical vertebra was observed. C3 and C2 were immovably joined so that the deformity could not be corrected by extension of the spinal column at this point. There was a compression of the spinal cord corresponding to the protrusion. The cause of this luxation could not be established. It may be assumed that the distortion was congenital, or caused by trauma at an early stage and that clinical symptoms could be observed only when, a
