In a prospective study of 170 patients with various types of chronic liver disease, a pulmonary gas transfer defect was found in 20% and mottled shadowing in the chest radiograph in 6%. The presence of these abnormalities was not related to the cause of the liver disease. The secondary immune response to tetanus toxoid in 14 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been studied in suspension cultures of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) and synovial membrane obtained at synovectomy. Hypogammaglobulinemia due to a new pathophysiological mechanism was studied in a patient with Sjögren's syndrome, a monoclonal IgM and a mixed (IgM-IgG) cryoglobulinemia. The IgM (IgMdk) component of the cryogel possessed light chains of lambda-type with highly restricted electrophoretic mobility analagous to those of a Waldenström's macroglobulin. Procarbazine, a new immunosuppressant, was active in inhibiting the lesions of experimental arthritis in rats. In comparison with anti-lymphocyte serum it was somewhat more effective in suppressing the secondary than the primary lesion of adjuvant-induced disease.
