During 5 years the authors followed up 35 patients with bronchogenic carcinomas. Of these, 34.3% had diverse paraneoplastic manifestations. The paraneoplastic reactions determined by ectopic production of different hormones and other substances as well as so-called "masks" of the systemic diseases are reviewed. An attempt is made to specify the basic mechanisms of the pathogenesis of each paraneoplastic sign.

A comprehensive data linkage system for the detailed investigation of occupational cancer has newly been established in the Danish Cancer Registry, providing employment histories back until 1964. Based on this system a study of 839 cases of cancer of the nasal cavities, sinuses and rhinopharnyx and 2,465 cancer controls diagnosed in Denmark during the period 1970-1982 was conducted. Clinical examinations of 34 patients wit hereditary ataxies was carried out using computerized tomography. Potentialities of the computerized tomography for specifying the diagnosis in patients with Friedreich's ataxy (12 observations) and cerebellar degenerations (22 observations) were determined. Results are reported from the first prospective study of gout in New Zealand Maoris based on a sample of 388 males and 378 females. At baseline, high mean levels of serum uric acid (SUA) were found, 0.422 +/- 0.092 mmol/1 (7.05 +/- 1.54 mg/100 ml) in males and 0.350 +/- 0.091 mmol/1 (5.85 +/- 1.52 mg/100 ml) in females.
