BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive percutaneous surgery (MIS) techniques have gained popularity in foot and ankle surgery, offering potential advantages over traditional open procedures, including reduced soft-tissue trauma, decreased postoperative pain and accelerated recovery. Concerns regarding the learning curve, precision of correction, and long-term outcomes have limited widespread adoption. This review evaluates the current evidence for MIS techniques across common foot and ankle pathologies.
METHODS: A narrative review of the literature was conducted searching MEDLINE and the Cochrane Lib

BACKGROUND: In end stage hallux rigidus, treatment is mainly surgical in the form of joint arthrodesis or arthroplasty. Although promising results have been reported for both surgical techniques a detailed comparison of gait biomechanics has not been conducted.
RESEARCH QUESTION: How do post-operative 3D kinematics, plantar pressures and patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) differ following arthrodesis or arthroplasty for end-stage hallux rigidus?
METHODS: Eleven arthrodesis and eleven arthroplasties were performed. Pre- and post-operative (follow-up time, 7.5 ± 1.0 months) data were co

First metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) arthrodesis is a powerful surgical option for treatment of hallux rigidus, hallux valgus, and revisional first MTPJ surgery. Joint arthroplasty serves as an alternative to arthrodesis for patients who want to preserve joint motion. However, joint arthroplasty has a high rate of failure and can lead to significant bone loss, which makes revisional surgery more challenging. In this study, we present the use of a calcaneal bone block allograft and bone marrow aspirate for fusion of a first MTPJ with a previously failed joint implant. Radiographic fusion was

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether CD31 could regulate paracetamol-induced liver injury, thereby providing a new direction for the prevention and treatment of drug-induced hepatitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Wild-type (WT) mice were treated with acetaminophen (APAP) (250 mg/kg) or isodose of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). 1, 3, 6 and 12 h after the treatment, the messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein expression level of CD31 in the liver of mice were determined by Real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blotting, respectively. Once CD31 was confirmed to be inv

Hallux rigidus is commonly treated with first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) arthrodesis, a procedure with high success and low complication rates. We present a rare case of postoperative hallux gangrene following first MTP arthrodesis in a 44-year-old woman with celiac disease and no conventional vascular risk factors. Despite normal dorsalis pedis and posterior tibial pulses, the great toe developed ischemic changes on postoperative Day 1, progressing to dry gangrene requiring amputation at the MTP joint. Angiography revealed no proximal obstruction, supporting a microvascular etiology. Potential

SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND: Meningiomas are the most common benign intracranial neoplasms with a slow growth presented as the intracranial lesion. These tumors are without any symptoms for a long time. At the time of diagnosis it is frequently an asymptomatic tumor. In that case the therapist may well suggest a wait-and-see strategy. The therapy of meningiomas focuses firstly on the microsurgical treatment. Volume reduction can be achieved immediately after treatment. Stereotactic radiosurgery is an important non-invasive treatment option for recurrent tumors or meningiomas with partial resection.

INTRODUCTION: First metatarsophalangeal (MTP-I) arthrodesis is a reliable procedure for end-stage hallux rigidus and selected complex first-ray deformities. Non-union is uncommon but clinically important, particularly when associated with pain, osteolysis, implant fatigue, and loss of correction. Revision is challenging because failure is usually multifactorial rather than the consequence of an isolated implant problem.
CASE REPORT: A 62-year-old woman with a 45 pack-year smoking history underwent MTP-I arthrodesis for advanced hallux rigidus with hallux varus and associated lesser-toe deform

BACKGROUND Gastric cancer is a common malignancy of the digestive system. There are presently no efficacious indicators to evaluate its curative effect and prognosis. Increased plasma D-dimer was reported to have a very strong association with neoplasm in advanced stages and poor overall survival (OS) for some malignant tumors in morbidity. MATERIAL AND METHODS Using propensity score analysis, we examined the potential effect of pre-chemotherapy plasma D-dimer level (PDL) on OS and progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with advanced gastric cancer (AGC). We divided 134 patients with AGC

Hallux rigidus is a common condition affecting the foot. I was not able to find evidence regarding the management of patients with hallux rigidus with manual physical therapy consisting of hands-on manual therapy techniques and movement-reinforcing exercise. This case report attempts to highlight the management of a patient with hallux rigidus by a physical therapist. The patient was a 60-year-old male baseball player with clinically apparent pain, loss of metatarsophalangeal joint motion, and radiographically visible degenerative changes suggesting a diagnosis of grade II hallux rigidus. First metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint fusion is a frequently employed surgical treatment option for hallux rigidus and hallux valgus. Implant-related complications are common, necessitating further investigation into predisposing factors. The altered mechanics of pes planus may influence surgical outcomes; however, its direct impact on implant removal rates post-fusion remains unclear. We retrospectively analyzed the TriNetX US Collaborative Network database to identify patients undergoing first MTP joint arthrodesis by ICD-10 and CPT coding, the data was stratified by preoperative pes planus

BACKGROUND: In the case of end-stage hallux rigidus, first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint arthrodesis is the gold-standard and is traditionally performed via an open approach. However, complications such as nonunion have been reported to be as high as 30%. Recently, there have been reports demonstrating a percutaneous approach to be effective and safe.
METHODS: Forty-nine patients with end-stage hallux rigidus underwent percutaneous first MTP joint arthrodesis with calcaneus autograft performed by a single surgeon. Each patient underwent a minimum of 24 month clinical and radiographic follow

INTRODUCTION: Arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) is a reliable procedure in alleviating pain and restoring function. However, there is limited published literature of the outcomes of this procedure and the ability to return to sport in elite athletes. This study aims to assess the outcomes of first MTPJ arthrodesis in the elite athlete population and their ability to return to professional sport.
METHODS: A single-center prospective case series of elite athletes undergoing first MTPJ arthrodesis between 2004 and 2016 was conducted. Patients were assessed a minimum of 2,

First metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) fusion is an effective surgical intervention for conditions such as hallux valgus and hallux rigidus. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to compare the safety and efficacy of crossed screws versus plating supplemented with an interfragmentary screw. A literature search of the Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and MEDLINE databases was performed to identify all studies directly comparing the two techniques. Meta-analysis was carried out using RevMan Web. Nine studies with 976 patients (1,035 toes in total, 512 toes in the crossed screws group, and

BACKGROUND: The cause of hallux rigidus remains controversial. However, it is assumed that dysfunction of the windlass mechanism and metatarsus primus elevatus play a role in the pathology. Three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) imaging is ideal for analysis of movements of the foot, which involve 3D and rotational motion. The purpose of the present study was to compare the windlass mechanism in healthy normal feet with that in feet with hallux rigidus by 3D CT imaging.
METHODS: A total of 17 feet with hallux rigidus and 21 normal feet were selected. Hallux rigidus was classified as
