Background and Clinical Significance: Cantú syndrome (OMIM #239850) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by gain-of-function variants in ABCC9 or KCNJ8, which encode subunits of the ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channel. Its characteristic features-generalized hypertrichosis, coarse facial appearance, skeletal abnormalities, and cardiovascular involvement-may be overlooked when other major comorbidities dominate the clinical picture. Case Presentation: A 29-year-old Taiwanese woman, born prematurely and complicated by neonatal hydrocephalus with subdural hemorrhage requiring ventricul

Notably, several factors are associated with hallux valgus (HV); however, their causal relationship remains unclear. In this study, a 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed to investigate the casual relationship between 9 endogenous risk factors and HV, aiming to provide a foundation for the clinical management of HV. Exposure factors such as body mass index (BMI), BMI (male), BMI (female), acquired flatfoot, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, knee osteoarthritis, hip osteoarthritis, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome were considered, with HV as the outcome. Exposure and outcome data we

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus (HV), also known as bunion deformity, is one of the most common forefoot deformities. Early diagnosis and proper evaluation of HV are important because timely management can improve symptoms and quality of life. Here, we propose a deep learning estimation for the radiographic measurement of HV based on a regression network where the input to the algorithm is digital photographs of the forefoot, and the radiographic measurement of HV is computed as output directly. The purpose of our study was to estimate the radiographic parameters of HV using deep learning, to classi

Plantar intrinsic muscles play a pivotal role in posture control and gait dynamics. They help maintain the longitudinal and transverse arches of the foot, and they regulate the degree and velocity of arch deformation during walking or running. Consequently, pathologies affecting the plantar intrinsic muscles (for instance, acquired and inherited neuropathies) lead to foot deformity, gait disorders, and painful syndromes. Intrinsic muscle malfunctioning is also associated with multifactorial overuse or degenerative conditions such as pes planus, hallux valgus, and plantar fasciitis. As the clin

BACKGROUND: Lateral column lengthening (LCL), originally described by Evans, is an established procedure to correct stage II adult acquired flatfoot deformity (AAFD). However, the relative position between the facets is violated, and other problems may include nonunion, malunion, and calcaneocuboid (CC) joint subluxation. Herein, we report a modified extra-articular technique of LCL with hockey-stick osteotomy, which preserves the subtalar joint as a whole, increases bony apposition to enhance healing ability, and preserves the insertion of the calcaneofibular ligament to stabilize the posteri

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of disease activity on recurrent deformities after resection arthroplasty for forefoot deformities in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
METHODS: This study included 83 feet in 58 patients with RA who underwent resection arthroplasty of all metatarsal heads, with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. The patients' demographic characteristics, preoperative radiographic findings, and RA disease activity evaluated using the 28-joint disease activity score based on the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (determined preoperatively and at

The hallux valgus deformity is the most common toe deformity of the forefoot and is often associated with a splayfoot. Malpositioning of the small toes may be isolated but are more common in other foot deformities. The understanding of the complex pathoanatomy of the foot is necessary for orthopedic treatment. Conservative treatment is reserved for the early stages. The indications for surgery should be based on clinical and radiographic findings. Countless surgical procedures are available and minimally invasive surgical techniques are also increasingly being used.

Resection arthroplasty for metatarsalgia is a selective procedure primarily indicated for patients with rheumatoid arthritis. These patients present with significant forefoot deformities, poor bone quality, and loss of soft tissue integrity. Resection of the metatarsal heads and correction of lesser toe deformities improve pain and decrease transfer metatarsalgia. Patients with concurrent hallux valgus may benefit from a lapidus procedure or hallux metatarsophalangeal fusion in an effort to improve outcomes and decrease incidence of recurrent hallux valgus. In rare cases, diabetics with neurop

Half-and-half nails were originally described as a transverse leukonychia in patients with chronic renal disease; other conditions (such as Behcet's and Crohn's disease) and medications (such as isoniazid) have also been associated with the nail changes. However, longitudinal half-and-half nails (affecting the medial aspects of the nails) have previously been reported on the great toes of an older woman and, in the present case, on the thumbs of an elderly man; neither person had Behcet's, Crohn's, or kidney disease or was receiving isoniazid. The woman had a true leukonychia, bilateral hallux

Between 20 and 45% of women aged over 65 years of age will develop one or more foot problems, which, although not specific to older women, are more common in that age group than in younger women. These include structural defects of the toes including hallux valgus, hammer, mallet or claw toes, skin disorders, fungal infection of the toes and toe nails, thickened toe nails, ulcers, fissures or cracks between the toes, corns and calluses, flat or high-arched feet. Foot pain is common and may be associated with other co-morbid diseases of the foot. Inappropriate footwear has an unfortunate role i

BACKGROUND: A precise pre-operative measurement of hindfoot malalignment is paramount to plan and obtain an accurate surgical correction. Hindfoot alignment is currently determined on standard weightbearing radiographs. However this is hampered by the superposition of the skeletal structures. Recent technology developed weightbearing cone beam CT to overcome this problem. The objective is to introduce a clinically relevant and reproducible method to measure hindfoot alignment on weightbearing CT.
METHODS: Sixty malalignments of the hindfoot were divided in to two groups; group one containing

BACKGROUND: Along with the recent advances in the pharmacological management of rheumatoid arthritis, there is a trend toward the use of joint-preserving surgery in the treatment of rheumatoid forefoot deformities. However, the clinical outcomes of joint-preserving surgery for rheumatoid forefoot deformities have not been assessed in comparison to resection arthroplasty.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 23 feet in 17 patients with rheumatoid forefoot deformities who underwent surgery between January 2010 and December 2013. The patients included 1 male (1 foot) and 16 females (22 feet), w

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus (HV) is frequently associated with other forefoot disorders, but its influence on preoperative quality of life (QOL) has not been well characterized. The main purpose of this study was to assess the influence of common associated forefoot disorders (metatarsalgia and lesser toe deformities) on preoperative QOL in patients with HV.
METHODS: Preoperative QOL assessed through the Short Form-36 (SF-36, version 2) was obtained from 94 patients with HV from a database. Patients were classified according to their condition: HV alone, HV and metatarsalgia, HV and lesser toe

The flexible form of acquired hallux varus has historically been treated with a number of applicable soft tissue procedures, most of which combine medial capsular release with adjunct procedures aimed at restoring the transverse plane balance of the digit. In this report, a surgical technique for correction of hallux varus that employs the use of an implanted button and suture device, namely the Mini TightRope(®), is described. Rather than relying on the patient's own soft tissues, this device applies tension to anchor the hallux in the proper alignment. The device is easily adjusted during th

BACKGROUND: Lower-extremity pathologic abnormalities have been common in military recruits for many years. Many of these conditions can become chronic and persist even after retiring from military service. We hypothesized that certain foot abnormalities are more prevalent in veterans versus nonveterans. The purpose of this study was to evaluate what foot and ankle disorders are associated with veteran status while controlling for other demographic factors.
METHODS: The National Health Interview Survey (Podiatry Supplement) from 1990 was used for this secondary data analysis. The data were div

Jaccoud's arthropathy (JA) is a condition characterised clinically by 'reversible' joint deformities such as swan neck, thumb subluxation, ulnar deviation, 'boutonniere' and hallux valgus, along with an absence of articular erosions on a plain radiograph. JA was initially described in patients with rheumatic fever (RF), but as this disorder has become rare the main clinical entity associated to JA at present is systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). JA has also been described in other connective tissue diseases, infections and neoplasia. In general, its prevalence in either SLE or RF is around 5%

Appropriate treatment for hallux varus requires comprehensive radiographic and systematic clinical assessment to identify the involved factors. A classification scheme must incorporate many variables in order to determine the best approach to correcting the deformity. This article focuses on iatrogenic hallux varus following bunion surgery, but the same principles apply to other causes of acquired hallux varus.

Jaccoud arthropathy (JA) was initially described in patients with rheumatic fever and later in several other rheumatologic conditions, particularly systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In patients with the latter disorder, a prevalence of about 5% has been observed. We conducted the current study to describe a series of patients with SLE with JA, followed at the Hospital Santa Izabel, Salvador, Brazil, during the year 2006. We reviewed the literature on JA, with emphasis on the histologic, clinical, radiologic, and therapeutic aspects of the condition. Twenty-one patients with JA were identifie
