Classification of hallux valgus deformity-is there a standard?

INTRODUCTION: Hallux valgus deformity severity is one determent for the surgical procedure for hallux valgus (HV) correction. HV deformities are usually classified into mild/moderate/severe. The aim was to investigate the cut-off criteria used to classify HV deformity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was based on a previous living systematic review. Four common databases were searched for the last decade. All review-steps were conducted by two reviewers. Data assessed were the individual cut-off values used to classify HV deformity into mild/moderate/severe, and the referenced classification

Comparative biomechanical study of different screw fixation methods for minimally invasive hallux valgus surgery: A finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: There are different screw configurations utilised for minimally invasive hallux valgus (HV) deformity despite limited biomechanical data assessing the stability and strength of each construct. We aimed to compare the strength of various screw configurations for minimally invasive HV surgery using finite element analysis (FEA). METHODS: A FEA model was developed from a CT of a female with moderate HV deformity. Five screw configurations utilizing one or two bicortical or intramedullary screws were tested. Stress analysis considered osteotomy displacement, maximum and minimum princi

[Radial neck fracture in children-"A benign fracture?"].

Radial neck fractures in children are rare but clinically relevant injuries that are often accompanied by concomitant injuries. Girls between the ages of 8 and 12 years old are more frequently affected, whereby a cubitus valgus variant can be a predisposing factor. The main trauma mechanism is a fall onto the outstretched, supinated arm with additional valgus stress. Radial neck fractures can be associated with concomitant injuries of the elbow joint, including an olecranon fracture and elbow dislocation. The diagnosis is typically made by conventional X‑radiographs, although ultrasonography c

Third generation versus fourth generation percutaneous hallux valgus correction: A radiographic analysis of outcomes.

Percutaneous hallux valgus correction is gaining popularity with foot and ankle surgeons. Various studies have found that the percutaneous approach has increased patient satisfaction and outcomes. The technique of the procedure has some variability with the geometry of the distal osteotomy being the most scrutinized. As of this publication, there has been no comparative studies on the geometry of the distal metatarsal osteotomy. This is a retrospective study of 50 patients who underwent percutaneous correction of a hallux valgus deformity with either a percutaneous transverse or modified chevr

Foot shape assessment techniques for orthotic and footwear applications: a methodological literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Foot shape assessment is important to characterise the complex shape of a foot, which is in turn essential for accurate design of foot orthoses and footwear, as well as quantification of foot deformities (e.g., hallux valgus). Numerous approaches have been described over the past few decades to evaluate foot shape for orthotic and footwear purposes, as well as for investigating how one's habits and personal characteristics influence the foot shape. This paper presents the developments reported in the literature for foot shape assessment. METHOD: In particular, we focus on four m

Simultaneous Meniscal Repair and Temporary Guided Growth Using a Tension Band Plate to Correct Alignment in Pediatric Discoid Lateral Meniscus Patients With Valgus Knee.

Meniscal stabilization with saucerization has recently been recommended for discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) to preserve the meniscus shape and prevent the progression of osteoarthritis. However, axial alignment of the lower limb causes a significant valgus change after arthroscopic partial meniscectomy and can lead to progressive lateral osteoarthritic changes. Thus, valgus knees in patients with DLM are a suspected predictive factor for poor outcomes after DLM surgery. Valgus malalignment in pediatric patients can be corrected by temporarily tethering one side of the open physis using implant-
