Beyond total sleep time: Associations between sleep characteristics, weight status, and lifestyle behaviors in 6-10-year-old children.

Sleep is increasingly recognized as a multifaceted construct; however, most studies rely on self-reported sleep duration and overlook other key characteristics. We analyzed cross-sectional data from the REACT project, which included 738 Portuguese children (398 girls) aged 6 to 10 years, using 7-day wrist actigraphy. Latent profile analysis based on total sleep time, sleep onset, wake-up, sleep efficiency, and sleep regularity identified four profiles: "Relatively Favorable Sleepers" (45.4%), "Late Starters & Short Sleepers" (34.3%), "Long Sleepers & Late Risers" (15.6%), and "Early Risers & P

Physical Activity and Frailty in patients with Advanced Chronic Liver Disease: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Physical frailty is associated with adverse outcomes in advanced chronic liver disease (AdvCLD). Tailoring physical activity prescriptions to minimise frailty is challenging because the volume and intensity of habitual activity remain undefined in AdvCLD. This prospective study aimed to (a) compare device-assessed 24-hour activity profiles in AdvCLD and healthy controls, (b) identify predictors of poor activity and associated frailty, and (c) determine the physical activity profiles required to minimise frailty in AdvCLD. METHODS: Ambulatory patients with AdvCLD (Birmingh

Longitudinal white matter network reorganization after rTMS in first-episode schizophrenia: associations with sleep improvement.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in first-episode schizophrenia and are associated with poor clinical and functional outcomes. Although repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has shown therapeutic potential for insomnia and schizophrenia, its efficacy for sleep disturbances in first-episode schizophrenia remains insufficiently characterized, and the underlying white matter network mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to determine whether active rTMS improves sleep quality compared with sham stimulation and whether longitudinal white matter network reorgan

Seven-day Accelerometer-derived Wrist Activity after Acute Stroke Stratified by Hemiparesis Severity: A Prospective Observational Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVES: This hypothesis-driven prospective pilot study characterized 7-day trajectories of bilateral wrist activity after acute stroke by baseline Fugl-Meyer Assessment-Upper Extremity (FMA-UE) severity. We hypothesized that mild impairment would be associated with greater paretic-side activity and more symmetric activity, whereas bilateral balance would change little despite clinical improvement. METHODS: Patients who began rehabilitation within 3 days after stroke wore bilateral wrist accelerometers for 7 days. Exploratory strata were mild (FMA-UE >45) and severe (≤45), based on an infl

Aspiration of wrist ganglion cysts: a scoping review of aspiration alone versus aspiration with intralesional corticosteroid injection and implications for contemporary ultrasound-guided practice.

OBJECTIVES: To map the extent, nature and quality of the available comparative literature evaluating aspiration alone versus aspiration with intralesional corticosteroid injection for wrist ganglion cysts, and to identify evidence gaps relevant to contemporary ultrasound-guided practice. Given the anticipated scarcity of comparative studies, the review aimed to characterise the evidence base rather than determine treatment superiority. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Given the anticipated scarcity and heterogeneity of comparative studies, a scoping review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-Sc

[Seronegative rheumatoid arthritis combined with elbow pigmented villonodular synovitis: A case report].

We report a case of elbow pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) combined with seronegative rheumatoid arthritis (SNRA) and review relevant literature to summarize the characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of this comorbidity. The patient was a 72-year-old female. She developed swelling and pain of the right elbow in 2002, and underwent surgical treatment. Postoperative histopathology confirmed PVNS. In 2007, she developed swelling and pain in the left elbow and underwent synovectomy, and synovectomy again yielded pathology consistent with PVNS. From 2021 onwards, she experienced recurrent

Clinical Outcomes of Single Intramedullary K-Wire Fixation with Figure-of-Eight Suture Augmentation for Ulnar Styloid Base and Distal Ulnar Metaphyseal Fractures.

Background/Objectives: The optimal fixation method for ulnar styloid base fractures remains controversial. Conventional dual K-wire fixation may be technically challenging in certain fracture configurations, whereas hook plate fixation provides rigid fixation but requires additional implant placement and surgical exposure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of single intramedullary K-wire fixation combined with figure-of-eight suture augmentation for ulnar styloid base and distal ulnar metaphyseal fractures. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 60

Delayed Radial Nerve Recovery After Ballistic vs. Blunt Humeral Shaft Fractures: A Time-to-Recovery Analysis of Nerves in Continuity.

Background/Objectives: Radial nerve palsy complicates 8-16% of humeral shaft fractures, and because more than 90% of primary palsies recover spontaneously, the clinically decisive question is not whether a nerve will recover but when. That timeline has been defined almost entirely from blunt-mechanism cohorts, yet is routinely applied to ballistic injury. No study has directly compared radial nerve recovery between gunshot wound (GSW) and blunt trauma. We compared time to full radial nerve recovery between mechanisms within a cohort of radial nerve injuries with continuity either operatively c

Predictors of Complications and the Role of Early Revision in Reverse-Flow Posterior Interosseous Artery Flaps: A Multivariable Analysis of 110 Cases.

BACKGROUND: The pedicled reverse-flow posterior interosseous artery (PIA) flap is a reliable option for soft-tissue reconstruction of the hand and wrist. However, the predictors of complications and the impact of early revision surgery have not been adequately evaluated using multivariable analysis. This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting flap survival, complication rates, and outcomes of salvage surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 110 patients who underwent reconstruction with a pedicled reverse PIA flap between 2010 and 2025. Univariable an

Tenosynovitis caused by Mycobacterium malmoense.

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium malmoense is a slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) increasingly recognized as a cause of extrapulmonary infections. Tenosynovitis due to M. malmoense is rare and diagnostically challenging because of its indolent course and nonspecific clinical presentation. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 65-year-old immunocompetent woman presenting with progressive wrist pain, swelling, and impaired hand function without prior trauma. Symptoms developed after exposure to fresh fish and shellfish. Surgical exploration revealed extensive tenosynovitis with median nerve com

A Multi-Site Measurement System with Photoplethysmographic and Microwave Sensors for Synchronous and Continuous Cardiovascular Signal Acquisition.

The dynamic development of non-invasive medical diagnostics and continuous health monitoring using biomedical signals in recent years has been one of the main research directions in biomedical electronics. This paper presents a developed multimodal, multi-site, and synchronous measurement system designed for continuous cardiovascular signal acquisition. The system integrates reflective and transmissive photoplethysmographic (PPG) sensors and active microwave (MW) sensors operating at a frequency of 4.9 GHz. One of the reflective PPG sensors enables multispectral (MWPPG) recording for six diffe

Suspected Seronegative Spondyloarthropathy in a Young Woman With Ulcerative Colitis and Concurrent Bleeding Symptoms.

Extraintestinal musculoskeletal manifestations, including peripheral and axial spondyloarthritis, are well recognized in ulcerative colitis (UC) and are frequently associated with human leukocyte antigen B27 (HLA-B27) positivity. We present a 20-year-old woman with UC who developed inflammatory-pattern polyarthralgia involving the knees, ankles, wrists, shoulders, and lower back, with morning stiffness improving with movement, alongside bruising, menorrhagia, and mild leukopenia. Examination showed bilateral lower extremity ecchymoses and mild joint tenderness without swelling or synovitis. La

The wrist/palm forearm ratio is less reliable in diabetic patients with carpal tunnel syndrome than in non-diabetic patients.

OBJECTIVE: This prospective study aimed to compare ultrasonographic parameters in diabetic and non-diabetic carpal tunnel syndrome and to analyze whether the findings are related to the presence of associated polyneuropathy. METHODS: The cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of the median nerve were measured at three sites using high-resolution ultrasound in 63 patients with diabetes mellitus and carpal tunnel syndrome (73 hands), 146 non-diabetic patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (163 hands), and 50 controls (50 hands). The diabetic group included 13 patients with type 1 (15 hands) and 50 with typ

Case Report: Flossing intervention for chronic upper limb spasticity after childhood-onset stroke.

BACKGROUND: Upper limb spastic paralysis after stroke often limits functional use of the affected hand and restricts activities of daily living, particularly in cases with long-standing impairment following childhood-onset stroke. Although various interventions for spasticity have been reported, many require specialized equipment or invasive procedures, which may limit long-term and home-based use. Flossing intervention, which involves compressive wrapping with an elastic band combined with movement, has recently been introduced in musculoskeletal practice; however, its application for post-st

Management of Merkel Cell Carcinoma of the Digits, Hand, and Wrist.

INTRODUCTION: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and often lethal cancer, with few cases presenting on the hand and digits. Treatments such as ray amputation can drastically impact quality of life and the existing literature is inconclusive. This systematic review evaluates the comprehensive management of surgically treated patients with MCC involving the digits, hand, and wrist. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, Medline and EMBASE were searched for studies reporting MCC of the digits, hand, and wrist. Given the heterogeneity of the reported data, no meta-analysis was performed; result

Evaluation of a Wrist-Worn Device for ECG-Based Detection of Acute Myocardial Infarction.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a two-lead ECG (wECG), acquired using a self-applicable, wrist-worn device, provides diagnostic value in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) detection. METHODS: Seventy-one patients with AMI, 26 with other cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), and 54 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. To acquire lead I, one electrode of the wrist-worn device was touched with the index finger of the opposite hand, while another lead was acquired by touching the electrode on the strap to a specific part of the body. The diagnostic value of the wECG is evaluated either directly

Tendon grafting using Gracilis and semitendinosus tendons for extensive flexor tendon defects following synovial sarcoma excision: A case report.

Soft-tissue sarcomas of the hand are rare. Wide excision often causes functional impairment. Reconstructing extensive flexor tendon defects after tumor excision is challenging because suitable donor tendons with adequate length and diameter are limited. We report a 39-year-old female with synovial sarcoma on the volar wrist. Tumor excision resulted in multiple flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendon defects. We used gracilis and semitendinosus tendons from the ipsilateral lower limb for reconstruction. The gracilis tendon reconstructed the index finger FDP. The semitendinosus tendon reconstruc

Night-to-night sleep variability and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality: a prospective cohort study with a complementary in vitro circadian-disruption experiment.

BACKGROUND: Irregular sleep-wake patterns may disrupt circadian rhythms, but the dose-response relationship between night-to-night sleep variability and mortality and the association of sleep onset variability with death remain unclear. METHODS: Using 4-7 valid days of wrist accelerometer data, including ≥1 weekend day, from 7,604 adults aged ≥20 years in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2014, linked to mortality through December 2019, we examined the within-person SDs of sleep midpoint, sleep onset, and total sleep time across nights and the sleep regularity index (S
