Discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) is a congenital variant of the knee characterized by an abnormally shaped meniscus prone to tearing and instability. When symptomatic, the treatment plan is based on the location and pattern of the tear, as well as the presence of instability. In most cases, posterior horn instability is present, but some meniscotibial or root attachments remain. This technical note describes a comprehensive arthroscopic approach to a Wrisberg variant DLM, with a complete absence of posterior root and lateral capsular attachments. A comprehensive arthroscopic reconstruction using

Lateral discoid meniscus is the most common meniscal congenital variant. A lateral discoid meniscus manifests with a spectrum of findings, including abnormalities in size and shape, disorganized collagen architecture, and/or hypermobility, predisposing the meniscus to early degeneration and tearing. The purpose of this narrative review is to discuss the anatomy of the lateral discoid meniscus and to highlight MRI findings that should be included in radiology reports to guide management.

PURPOSE: Medial meniscus (MM) posterior root tear (PRT) has gained increasing attention because of its biomechanical impact and rapid progression to osteoarthritis. Identifying the risk factors for MMPRT is essential for early diagnosis. Although the discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) is a common congenital variant, no studies have reported on the relationship between MMPRT and DLM. This study aimed to examine the relationship between MMPRT and DLM.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 94 matched knees that underwent arthroscopic surgery between 2015 and 2021 (58 with MMPRT and 36 wi

BACKGROUND: Discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) is a congenital anomaly associated with increased risk of tearing and peripheral rim instability due to abnormal morphology and deficient capsular attachments. While total meniscectomy was historically performed, long-term complications have prompted a shift toward arthroscopic saucerization with or without repair. Though midterm outcomes are favorable, long-term data remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate long-term clinical outcomes following arthroscopic preservation surgery for symptomatic DLM and compare results between saucerization alone a

Discoid meniscus is the most common congenital meniscal abnormality encountered in pediatric patients and frequently involves the lateral meniscus. While some discoid menisci remain asymptomatic, many children and adolescents develop pain, mechanical symptoms, or instability requiring surgical treatment. Historically, subtotal or total meniscectomy was commonly performed to address pain, mechanical symptoms, and functional limitation associated with symptomatic discoid meniscus. However, growing evidence regarding the biomechanical and long-term consequences of meniscal loss has led to a signi

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies involving the meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) are rare and often discovered incidentally. Discoid meniscus is the most frequently reported congenital variant, whereas medial meniscal hypoplasia and ACL agenesis remain exceptionally uncommon.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old male presented with right knee pain, swelling, and instability following a noncontact basketball injury. He reported a similar episode weeks earlier. Clinical examination revealed anterior laxity, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a nonvisualized ACL consistent

BACKGROUND: Discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) is a congenital knee variant prone to degeneration and tears owing to its unique morphology and altered biomechanics. While magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard for DLM evaluation, the anatomical contributors to its pathological progression remain unclear. This study aimed to explore MRI-based morphological factors associated with DLM degeneration and tears using quantitative analysis.
METHODS: A total of 292 patients with DLM were retrospectively divided into three groups based on MRI findings: normal, degenerative, and tear DLM. Qu

A discoid meniscus is a congenital abnormality of the meniscus characterized by a disk-shaped configuration. Although medial involvement is uncommon, symptomatic cases may present in young, active individuals with mechanical knee symptoms that limit sports participation. A 15-year-old female athlete presented with chronic medial knee pain, mechanical symptoms, and an inability to fully extend the knee despite failed conservative management. MRI demonstrated a complete discoid medial meniscus with a central tear. Arthroscopy confirmed a discoid medial meniscus without significant peripheral ins

BACKGROUND: Because of congenital abnormal collagenous structures and peripheral attachments, discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) is often associated with tears and instability and a risk of premature compartmental articular degeneration. Typically, surgery is indicated for symptomatic patients. Several surgical techniques have been described in the literature, but no studies have examined surgeon variation.
PURPOSE: To determine the intersurgeon agreement for DLM surgical planning and postoperative restriction after arthroscopic assessment.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
METHODS: Sixteen

Discoid medial meniscus (DMM) is a rare congenital anomaly, with bilateral cases being even more uncommon. Due to its rarity, comprehensive data on its prevalence, clinical presentation, and optimal management strategies are limited. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and treatment outcomes of symptomatic DMM in a pediatric population. A retrospective review was conducted on patients under 18 years of age diagnosed with symptomatic DMM. Data were extracted using ICD-10 codes Q68.6 and M23.16 and were supplemented by free-text searches. The inclusion criteria

INTRODUCTION: Discoid meniscus is a congenital anomaly, most commonly affecting the lateral compartment of the knee, characterized by an abnormally thick, disc-shaped meniscus. While many individuals are asymptomatic, others experience knee pain, swelling, and mechanical symptoms such as locking or clicking. These symptoms often arise due to tears or altered mechanics associated with the discoid shape. Advanced imaging, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is crucial for diagnosing discoid meniscus and assessing associated tears, as traditional X-rays offer limited diagnostic value.

BACKGROUND: The current discussion comprehensively addresses the injury and treatment of discoid lateral meniscus. However, it is important to note that an unfavorable biomechanical environment caused by the discoid lateral meniscus not only leads to self-injury but also has a significant impact on adjacent structures. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between discoid lateral meniscus and injuries in both the meniscus and cartilage within the total tibiofemoral joint. METHODS: Patients undergoing knee magnetic resonance imaging examinations at our outpatient

BACKGROUND: Discoid meniscus is the most frequent intraarticular paediatric knee congenital condition. Only symptomatic patients require surgical attention with arthroscopy. The incidence of discoid meniscus repair is increasing.
DIAGNOSIS: Typical presentation is an insidious popping or snapping when mobilizing the knee. The older individuals can experience pain and effusion. Restricted knee motion suggests a meniscal rim instability. MRI confirms the diagnosis, with shape and volume criteria, and helps planning surgery. The most common tear pattern of the discoid meniscus is a horizontal te

INTRODUCTION: Anomalous anterolateral meniscofemoral ligaments (ALMFLs) are rare and underreported anatomical variations that are crucial for knee stability and joint biomechanics. This case report presents two instances of ALMFL, one associated with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear and the other with congenital ACL absence. These cases are significant as they contribute to the limited body of literature on ALMFL and its management, highlighting the importance of recognizing this anomaly during knee surgeries.
CASE REPORT: The first case involves a 28-year-old female with a torn ACL f

BACKGROUND: The discoid meniscus is an anomaly caused by a congenital morphological variant of the meniscus, in which the meniscus has an abnormally wide and flat cartilage shape. An arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (saucerization) is the preferred treatment strategy to maintain peripheral stability and functionality of the meniscus. Meniscal repair is indicated as an additional surgical strategy when residual instability occurs after saucerization and in some rupture patterns, such as horizontal tears.
CASE REPORT: We present the first case reported in Colombia (Latin America) of a 19-year-

The discoid meniscus is a common congenital meniscal malformation that is prevalent mainly in Asians and often occurs in the lateral discoid meniscus. Patients with asymptomatic discoid meniscus are usually treated by conservative methods such as observation and injury avoidance, while patients with symptoms and tears need to be treated surgically. Arthroscopic saucerization combined with partial meniscectomy and meniscus repair is the most common surgical approach., and early to mid-term reports are good. The prognostic factors are the patient's age at surgery、follow-up time and type of surge

Discoid meniscus is a congenital morphological variant of the meniscus, which tends to occur more frequently in its lateral form than in the medial form. This anomaly is characterized by central hypertrophy of the meniscus and a larger diameter than the normal meniscus, resulting in an abnormal shape and greater coverage of the tibial plateau. The clinical presentation of this condition varies depending on the stability of the meniscus. In pediatric patients, in particular, it is common to experience progressive and atraumatic symptoms, such as pain and limited mobility. Diagnosis is based on

Discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) is the most frequent congenital variant of the lateral meniscus, which is prone to degeneration and tears, and frequently causes knee osteoarthritis. The purpose of this article has been to analyze the publications made during 2023 on DLM. The main conclusions of the analysis were as follows: MRI assessment might be helpful to diagnose DLM and detect the presence of instability: two main factors in the decision to perform surgery. Arthroscopic assessment should be utilized in conjunction with MRI findings for complete DLM diagnosis. Restoring the normal shape, re
