Discoid meniscus is a congenital variant of the knee joint that typically involves abnormal morphology and potential instability of the lateral meniscus. Some discoid menisci have abnormal peripheral attachments and are unstable. Discoid menisci are prone to tearing secondary to increased thickness, poor tissue quality, and instability. Patients may or may not be symptomatic. Torn or unstable discoid menisci cause mechanical symptoms, pain, and swelling. Symptomatic patients in whom nonsurgical management fails most frequently are treated with arthroscopic surgery. Historically, complete menis

Discoid meniscus is an anatomical congenital anomaly more often found in the lateral meniscus. A discoid medial meniscus is a very rare anomaly, and even more rare is to diagnose a bilateral discoid medial meniscus although the real prevalence of this situation is unknown because not all the discoid medial menisci are symptomatic and if the contralateral knee is not symptomatic then it is not usually studied. The standard treatment of this kind of pathology is partial meniscectomy. Currently the tendency is to be very conservative so suture and saucerization of a torn discoid meniscus when pos

Reports of congenital abnormalities of the lateral meniscus include discoid meniscus, accessory meniscus, double-layered meniscus, and ring-shaped meniscus. Particularly, only a few cases of double-layered meniscus have been reported. We report a case of double-layered lateral meniscus, in which an additional semicircular meniscus was observed under the normal lateral meniscus. The accessory hemimeniscus was resected by means of arthroscopic surgery. This case demonstrates an interesting and extremely rare anatomical abnormality of the lateral meniscus.

There is a greater incidence of discoid meniscus in Asian countries than in Western countries, and bilateral discoid menisci are also common. The discoid meniscus may be a congenital anomaly, and genetics or family history may play a role in the development of discoid menisci. Because the histology of discoid meniscus is different from that of normal meniscus, it is prone to tearing. Individuals with a discoid meniscus can be asymptomatic or symptomatic. Asymptomatic discoid menisci do not require treatment. However, operative treatment is necessary if there are symptoms. Total meniscectomy le

Limping in children is a common complaint at pediatric, pediatric orthopaedic offices and in emergency rooms. There are several causes for this condition, and identifying them is a challenge. The older the patient, the better the anamnesis and more detailed the physical examination will be, enabling an easier medical assessment for searching the source of the disorder. In order to make the approach easier, three age groups can and should be considered. Among infants (1 to 3 years old), diagnosis will most likely be: transitory synovitis, septic arthritis, neurological disorders (mild brain pal

The discoid medial meniscus is an extremely rare anomaly. Bilateral discoid medial menisci are much more rare but intermittently reported. We report the first case of bilateral discoid medial menisci with positive double PCL sign, which typically indicates a bucket-handle tear of medial meniscus. A literature review was also conducted on bilateral discoid medial menisci.

BACKGROUND: The purpose was to investigate prevalence of bilateral discoid lateral menisci (DLM) in Han Chinese patients who received surgery for symptomatic DLM, as well as a follow-up study of their asymptomatic contralateral knees using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS: A total of 110 patients [50 males and 60 females; average age: 21.95 ± 12.77 years (range: 6 to 67 years)] admitted to our hospital with symptomatic DLM were treated with arthroscopic surgery. The contralateral asymptomatic knees were evaluated for DLM by MRI. Postoperative clinical evaluation was performed using t

Discoid meniscus of the knee is a well-known anatomic and congenital variant of the lateral meniscus. It is often asymptomatic, but can be associated with knee pain and other symptoms. Posterior dislocation of the discoid meniscus is an extremely rare finding; to the best of our knowledge, only one case has been reported in the literature. Here, we report a case of 10-year-old girl who presented with right knee pain with no history of trauma. The radiograph of her right knee was negative but MRI showed bilateral lateral discoid menisci with posterior dislocation in the right knee and some subl

PURPOSE: Hypoplasia of the lateral femoral condyle has been reported in discoid lateral meniscus patients, but associated imaging findings in the axial plane have not been characterized. In this study, we aimed to identify differences in the lateral femoral condyle between patients with discoid lateral meniscus and those with normal menisci using axial MRI images.
METHODS: Twenty-three patients (24 knees) with complete discoid lateral meniscus, 43 (45 knees) with incomplete discoid lateral meniscus, and 50 with normal menisci (50 knees) were enrolled and distributed into three groups. Two new

We report the case of a 5-year-old girl who presented to the clinic with recurrent knee pain after meniscal repair and saucerization at age 3. The finding of a regenerated discoid meniscus was confirmed arthroscopically and radiographically. To our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature to confirm regeneration of a discoid meniscus after saucerization. The case has significant implications for management of pediatric discoid meniscus tears and patient counseling, and is encouraging in terms of the potential for repair and regeneration of meniscal tissue, particularly in the very

BACKGROUND: Discoid lateral meniscus is more susceptible to tear than normal meniscus. A comparison study for tear types of discoid lateral meniscus between children and adults has not been reported.
PURPOSE: To compare tear type of surgically proven discoid lateral meniscus between adults and children, and to analyze diagnostic performance for tear type of discoid lateral meniscus using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Knee MR examinations of 53 children and 84 adults who had discoid lateral menisci identified at arthroscopic surgery were retrospectively evaluated wit

INTRODUCTION: The ring-shaped lateral meniscus is very rare. Although it is essentially known as a congenital anomaly, a central tear in an incomplete discoid meniscus or an old bucket-handle tear in a meniscus may be easily mistaken for a ring-shaped meniscus. We experienced a ring-shaped lateral meniscus that regenerated after partial resection of a discoid meniscus together with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 37-year-old female patient still experienced unrelenting knee pain 6 months after ACL reconstruction and partial meniscectomy of a discoid la

PURPOSE: To provided an evidence-based summarisation of the discoid medial meniscus in conjunction with a case report describing a novel management approach which includes MRI-assisted pre-operative planning and a limited meniscal resection.
METHODS: Case report and structured literature review of Medline referenced articles from 1941 to 2011.
RESULTS: Forty-one papers describing 61 patients and 82 discoid medial menisci were identified. Data extracted included patient demographics, diagnostic techniques, operative interventions, and associated pathological findings. These findings were comp

Discoid lateral meniscus is a rare condition that unilateral is more common than bilateral, here we report a case of bilateral discoid lateral meniscus which was observed in the knee joints of a female fetal cadaver of 14 weeks gestation (92 mm crown-rump length). It was an incomplete type of discoid meniscus, occupying about three fourth of the tibial plateau area. The embryological basis of this anomaly is discussed with emphasize on its clinical implications. This finding support the opinion that discoid lateral meniscus as a true congenital malformation that is not found in normal developm

Discoid lateral meniscus is an intra-articular knee disorder that typically presents in children and adolescents. The natural history depends on the type of anomaly and the nature and presence of symptoms. Management of this disorder should be directed toward resolution of the symptoms while preserving meniscal tissue and function. Modern surgical techniques make suturing and preservation of meniscal tissue feasible. In the present article, the clinical manifestations, diagnostic criteria and practical management considerations are reviewed.

INTRODUCTION: Discoid medial meniscus is a rare abnormality, with incidence estimated at 0.12%. The present study describes this congenital abnormality anatomically and reports clinical results in four symptomatic cases managed by surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: A retrospective study included three patients (2 female, 1 male), one of whom had bilateral pathology. Mean age at consultation was 18.5 years (range, 13 to 28 yrs). Presenting symptoms were knee pain, associated with acute locking (1 case) or recurrent effusion (1 case). Plain X-rays were normal. MRI found discoid medial meniscus in a

Among the congenital anomalies involving the lateral compartment of the knee, the combination of both a discoid meniscus and agenesis of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is extremely rare and probably underestimated due to the presence of a meniscofemoral ligament often mistaken for an intact ACL. The therapeutic management of such abnormalities is not univocal and highly depends on their clinical impact. We report on the observations of an 8-year-old boy presenting with a cystic formation on a lateral discoid meniscus associated with agenesis of the ACL and the presence of an anterior lat

Discoid meniscus is the commonest anatomical aberration of the knee joint, among rare cases such as bilateral separated lateral meniscus, accessory lateral meniscus, partial deficiency of the lateral meniscus and double-layered lateral meniscus. An 11-year-old girl presented with history of chronic pain in her right knee for the last 6 months. The problem disturbed her involvement in the sport activities at school. Clinical examination revealed a clicking sensation on knee extension with lateral joint line tenderness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of her right knee showed torn posterior hor

PURPOSE: to describe agenesis of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) with an anterior lateral meniscofemoral ligament.
METHODS AND RESULTS: case report of a 13-year-old girl with an absent ACL and with an anterior lateral meniscofemoral ligament instead, as well as absence of the anterior insertion of the lateral meniscus in the tibia and a discoid ring-like lateral meniscus, with hypoplasia of the lateral femoral condyle. At arthroscopy, the anterior lateral meniscofemoral ligament was found to arise from the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus and insert into the posterolateral aspect of
