This retrospective study was aimed to investigate the epidemiologic, clinical and arthroscopic features of discoid meniscus variant in Greek population. We reviewed the cases of 2,132 patients who underwent knee arthroscopy between 1986 and 2004 and diagnosis of discoid lateral meniscus was established in 39 patients with mean age of 31.7 +/- 9.4 years old. Incidence of the discoid lateral meniscus variant was recorded at rate of 1.8% presenting no significant differences according to patient gender or lesion body side. Regarding the type of discoid dysmorphy, 23 cases attributed to complete t

We present an unusual case of an athletic 17-year-old male cyclist with bilateral chronic dislocating biceps femoris tendons. On flexion of the knee, the biceps tendon subluxed over a large exostosis, creating a snapping sound. Snapping of tendons is common around the hip, ankles, shoulder, and elbow, but rare at the knee. When it does occur, snapping about the knee can be due to discoid meniscus, rheumatoid nodules, synovial plicae, iliotibial band syndrome, congenital snapping knee, and snapping tendons. Research revealed only 5 previous cases due to subluxation of the biceps femoris tendon.

Reports of congenital abnormalities of the lateral meniscus include discoid meniscus, accessory meniscus, double-layered meniscus and ring-shaped meniscus. We present a rare case of an unusual abnormality of the bilateral lateral meniscus, which was completely separated and duplicated at the midportion, although different from an accessory meniscus, with an anomaly of the anterior horn of the medial meniscus as well as a double-layered medial meniscus. This type of abnormality of the lateral meniscus and double-layered medial meniscus has not previously been described in the literature. We hav

Osteochondritis dissecans is a form of osteochondrosis limited to the articular epiphysis and the relationship of osteochondritis dissecans and discoid lateral meniscus has been clearly identified. This article presents a 10-year-old boy with osteochondritis dissecans of the medial femoral condyle associated with hypoplastic medial and partial deficient lateral menisci. The patient presented with activity-related pain and intermittent swellings of his left knee for 2 months without any evidence of significant knee trauma. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed anomalous medial meniscus mimicking

The bipartite patella is a developmental osseous variant that is found in approximately 2% to 6% of the population, and is bilateral in 50%. The proposed etiologies include old nonunion, osteochondritis, and congenital growth defect. It is often found incidentally around the inferior pole, lateral margin, or superolateral border of the patella. It is usually asymptomatic, but may be related to anterior knee pain. However, separation of the bipartite patella is rare, with 9 cases reported in the literature. The symptomatic snapping knee syndrome may be caused by multiple intra-articular and ext

OBJECTIVE: Discoid meniscus is a rare congenital pathology affecting mainly the lateral meniscus. Radiological diagnosis, initially based on arthrographic findings, is now established on well defined MRI criteria. In this study, ultrasonography (US) was the modality proposed for diagnosing discoid meniscus and compared to the normal sonographic meniscal pattern. Subjects and methods. 8 children aged from 6 to 11 years, with a symptomatology highly suggestive of meniscal pathology, were investigated by US of both knees, followed by MRI in 3 and arthroscopy in all cases.
RESULTS: In all 8 cases

We reviewed 164 consecutive cases (158 patients) of arthroscopic examinations for lateral meniscal variants during the last 10 years. We classified lateral meniscal variants into four types by arthroscopic appearance, into six tear patterns by modifying O'Connor's classification, and compared magnetic resonance images (MRI) with arthroscopic findings. Regarding the four types, 131 cases were complete, 25 cases were incomplete, 4 cases were Wrisberg, and 4 cases were ring-shaped meniscus. The six tear patterns were as follows: 33 simple horizontal, 21 combined horizontal, 37 longitudinal, 27 ce

We present the cases of 5 patients with a torn discoid lateral meniscus treated using partial central meniscectomy in conjunction with the suture repair of the tear. The patients were 4 boys and 1 girl with a mean age of 15.4 years (range, 11 to 17). Preoperatively, all patients complained of knee pain during daily or sports activities. At the final follow-up evaluation, more than 2 years later, 4 patients' conditions were graded as excellent and 1 patient's condition was graded as fair according to Ikeuchi's grading scale. The average Lysholm score improved from 83.4 points (range, 70-90) to

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to evaluate arthroscopic partial resection of discoid lateral meniscus tears with an emphasis on radiographic evidence of degenerative changes after this procedure.
TYPE OF STUDY: Retrospective clinical study.
METHODS: Of 41 patients with an arthroscopic diagnosis of discoid meniscus over an 8-year period, 34 symptomatic lateral discoid meniscus tears in 33 patients were analyzed at an average follow-up of 5.6 years. The average age at operation was 19.8 years and most patients had vague and intermittent symptoms that caused delay in clinical diagnosis.

The discoid meniscus is the most common abnormal meniscal variant in children. It is most likely a congenital deviation and usually occurs laterally. The discoid shape results in greater coverage of the tibia and usually is associated with increased thickness of the meniscus that may lead to abnormal shearing forces across the knee joint. The Watanabe classification divides this anomaly into three distinct types: complete, incomplete, and Wrisberg ligament. The complete and incomplete types are often asymptomatic; unless symptomatic, they generally should be left alone. Tears should be treated

Medial discoid meniscus is an uncommon abnormality. To date, only a few reports have described the associated anomaly with discoid meniscus. However, there are no reports on medial discoid meniscus accompanied by an anomaly of the meniscus itself. The authors found that a medial discoid meniscus completely coalesced with the anterior cruciate ligament. This anomaly strongly supports the congenital development theory of discoid meniscus. Both magnetic resonance imaging and the arthroscopic findings are presented. The patient was treated successfully by saucerization of the discoid meniscus up t

Abnormalities of the lateral meniscus in humans are a long-known fact. Three different types of discoid menisci are described in Watanabe's atlas, being considered as congenital malformations. For the second time in the literature, a fourth ring-shaped type of discoid lateral meniscus was described as an incidental finding in this Journal by Monllau et al. in 1998. The present case is the first description of a symptomatic, ring-shaped lateral meniscus with a concomitant, recurrent cyst at the lateral aspect of a child's knee.

We report a three-generation family in which four members had brachydactyly type A1, degenerative arthritis of the knee as a complication of abnormal menisci, and variable scoliosis. Nine of the 15 individuals in the two generations preceding the proband had brachydactyly. Three of these nine had degenerative arthritis of the knee including the proband's father who had meniscal degeneration with tears. One other had radiologically confirmed discoid menisci. Of those with brachydactyly, five also had scoliosis. Although autosomal dominant inheritance of brachydactyly A1 and discoid menisci have

The existence of abnormal-shaped menisci has been long recognized. The presence of discoid menisci in the human knee is considered to be a congenital malformation with a very low rate of incidence except in Asian populations. Since the publication of Watanabe's Atlas, three types of lateral meniscal abnormalities are generally accepted: the complete and incomplete discoid, as well as the Wrisberg-ligament type meniscus. The present case is the second description of a ring-shaped meniscus on the lateral side of the knee and we propose that this variant be included as a fourth variant in a futur

Discoid meniscus is an uncommon dysplasia generally affecting the lateral meniscus. Its congenital or acquired origin remains a question of debate. We report 5 cases or lateral discoid meniscus in 4 girls and 1 boy, aged from 6 to 11 years. The main clinical signs were snapping knee and pain. The discoid meniscus appeared in MRI as an abnormally large meniscus extending into the joint space. It appeared as a central band giving increased signal in 3 out of 5 cases. The significance of this probably trauma-induced image was uncertain. Surgery confirmed MRI findings in 4 cases in which total res

We retrospectively reviewed the long-term results of total meniscectomy performed in seventeen knees (fourteen children) to treat a discoid lateral meniscus. The mean duration of follow-up was 19.8 years (range, 12.5 to 26.0 years). On the basis of the rating system of the International Knee Documentation Committee, seven knees were normal (grade A), six were nearly normal (grade B), three were abnormal (grade C), and one was severely abnormal (grade D) at the latest follow-up evaluation. Ten of the seventeen knees had clinical symptoms of osteoarthrosis. Radiographs were available for fifteen

The appearances of knee injuries on MR imaging are less well documented in children than adults. Some patterns of injury are shared by both groups of patients, e. g. meniscal damage. The frequency of specific injuries may differ, e. g. anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. Congenital abnormality, coexistent pathology and previous treatment of the knee appear to be associated with meniscal problems. Discoid menisci are seen most frequently in children and have unique features on MR scans. Cruciate ligament tears are difficult to diagnose in the smallest children. The ACL may not be identified

This is a report on arthroscopic treatment of an abnormal femoral origin of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in combination with a discoid lateral meniscus in a 3-year-old child. The discoid lateral meniscus was treated by resection of the inner part with punches and by use of the holmium:YAG laser. The abnormal femoral origin of the ACL which was found inserting over the whole length of the intercondylar notch in anterior-posterior direction was detached at the anterior part with the laser. At examination after 1 year, the child was completely pain-free without any instability of the knee
