Surveillance of Athletes' Health in Resource-Constrained African Sports Contexts: Why Context Matters and Time To Catch Up.

Athlete health surveillance is fundamental to understanding, preventing, and managing injuries, illnesses, and other health problems in sport. While standardized surveillance systems developed by organizations such as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have substantially advanced sports medicine globally, their applicability across diverse African sporting environments remains insufficiently examined. Many existing surveillance approaches assume the availability of trained medical personnel, robust health infrastructure, standardized documentation systems, and stable sporting environmen

Hip Structural Analysis and Multiple Fragility Fractures: Evidence from a Large Cross-Sectional Clinical Cohort.

Hip structural analysis parameters (HSAP) are associated with hip fracture risk, but associations with multiple fragility fracture phenotypes remain poorly characterised. We analysed 11 DXA-derived HSAP in patients referred between June 2004 and November 2019. Five mutually exclusive fracture phenotypes were defined: no fracture, single hip fracture, single non-hip fracture, multiple non-hip fractures, and multiple fractures including at least one hip fracture. Separate multinomial logistic regression models were fitted for each HSAP reported as odds ratio (OR) per standard deviation increase,

Multimodal Programming of Extracellular Vesicles via Nano-Primed SECCS-Based 3D Microenvironments for Coordinated Ferroptosis Suppression and Myogenic Regeneration in Diabetes.

Chronic diabetic glucolipotoxicity is associated with progressive skeletal muscle atrophy, bone loss, cellular senescence, and ferroptotic injury. Because ferroptosis inhibition alone may not restore compromised myogenic capacity, we developed a combined stem cell-conditioning strategy integrating fullerol priming with the stem cell screen-enrich-combine(-biomaterials) circulating system (SECCS). This integrated three-dimensional culture platform uses porous β-TCP granules and intermittent medium circulation to generate BMSCs-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs). Among 2D-EVs, F-2D-EVs, SECCS-

Bile Leak 30 Years Post-cholecystectomy: A Rare Case.

Bile leaks are a well-recognised complication of cholecystectomy, typically presenting within the first postoperative week. Extremely delayed presentations are exceptionally rare, with only a handful of cases reported years after the index procedure. We report the case of a 60-year-old woman who presented with a four-day history of epigastric pain, fever, and vomiting, 30 years following open cholecystectomy. Imaging revealed a subhepatic fluid collection and a dilated common bile duct suggestive of a biliary leak. She was successfully managed with ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage and i

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy ameliorates cyclophosphamide-induced spermatogenic impairment by suppressing the RhoA/ROCK signaling pathway in mice.

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy has shown potential to improve sperm quality and reproductive outcomes, but the mechanisms underlying its protective effects remain unclear. This study investigated whether HBO ameliorates cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced spermatogenic impairmentand whether Rhoa/Rock signaling is involved. Male BALB/c mice were assigned to control, CYP, and CYP + HBO groups. CYP was administered intraperitoneally for five consecutive days, followed by HBO treatment at 2.5 ATA for 60 min/day, 5 days/week for 2 weeks. Sperm parameters, serum sex hormones, testicular histopathology,

Fall prevention interventions among older adults in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs): an integrative review.

PURPOSE: Falls are a leading cause of injury-related morbidity and mortality among older adults. Although effective fall-prevention programs exist, evidence on their implementation and effectiveness in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains limited. This review synthesized studies of fall-prevention interventions for older adults in LMICs. METHODS: Ovid-Medline, CINAHL, and Scopus databases were systematically searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental studies reporting falls, fall risk, or fear of falling as primary or secondary outcomes. A Redox-Active Metal-Sulfide Framework for Selective and Synergistic Removal of Iodate.

Efficient removal of iodate (IO3-) from radioactive liquid waste is highly desirable for radioactive waste management and environmental protection but remains a formidable challenge due to the low adsorption capacity or insufficient removal depth resulting from the weak affinity of conventional single-function adsorbents. Here, we report a redox-active metal-sulfide framework (SCU-SnS) that enables the highly efficient decontamination of IO3- through a synergistic effect: efficient reduction of IO3- to I- by S2- sites, combined with an extremely high binding affinity between Sn4+ sites and the

Comparative hepatoprotective effects of Ginkgo biloba extract and N-Acetylcysteine against methotrexate-induced liver injury in rats: modulation of IκB-α, p38 MAPK, and p53 phosphorylation.

Methotrexate (MTX) is an effective chemotherapeutic agent whose use can be limited by hepatotoxicity. This study comparatively evaluated the effects of Ginkgo biloba extract (GbE) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on MTX-induced liver injury, focusing on oxidative stress, inflammatory and apoptotic responses, and associated hepatic phosphorylation of Inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa-B alpha (IκB-α), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK), and tumor protein p53 (p53), key components of stress-responsive signaling pathways. Thirty-two adult male rats were randomly assigned to four groups (n =

Neuroimaging findings in hyperammonemic encephalopathy associated with sepsis-induced liver injury: a pilot case series.

BACKGROUND: Hyperammonemic encephalopathy (HE) is a severe complication of sepsis-induced liver injury (SILI), often associated with sepsis. However, its neuroimaging manifestations remain poorly understood. The aim of this pilot case series is to describe the brain MRI findings in patients with sepsis and HE. METHODS: We analysed brain MRI data from 15 consecutive patients with sepsis and clinically confirmed HE. Assessment of cerebral changes was performed using a standard MRI protocol. The following parameters were evaluated during the analysis: localization and signal intensity characteri

ATF6α mediates Cr(VI)-induced acute hepatotoxicity via GRP78-dependent mitochondrial dysfunction under oxidative stress.

Acute exposure to the common environmental toxin, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), can cause severe chemical hepatotoxicity. Although endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is closely associated with Cr(VI)-induced liver damage, the underlying mechanism requires further investigation. In this study, mice and hepatocytes exposed to Cr(VI) were used to analyze the effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated ER stress on acute liver injury, with a particular focus on the activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6) branch. It was found that Cr(VI) stimulated the expression and cleavage of ATF6α, while

A near-infrared fluorescent probe for imaging hydrogen peroxide in living cells and acute liver injury.

Acute liver injury (ALI) is linked to oxidative stress, with hydrogen peroxide H2O2 as a key mediator. We report a near-infrared fluorescent probe, PhCy-H2O2, based on an ICT mechanism. The probe shows high sensitivity (detection limit in the low micromolar range) and excellent selectivity, producing a significant fluorescence turn-on at 796 nm upon H2O2 recognition. This reaction has the advantages of high sensitivity, high selectivity, fast reaction and stability under physiological pH conditions. In both cellular and mice models, the probe clearly visualized dose-dependent H2O2 generation i

Nonlinear Dose-Response Association Between Exercise Intensity and Urinary Liver-Type Fatty Acid-Binding Protein in Young Men: A Piecewise Threshold Analysis.

High-intensity physical exercise can induce temporary renal hemodynamic strain and subclinical tubular injury, yet the exact dose-response relationship remains poorly defined. This study investigated the relationship between exercise intensity and urinary liver-type fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP) concentrations, a sensitive marker of proximal tubular stress, to identify an exploratory intensity threshold. We conducted an observational cohort study of 285 healthy young men undergoing a routine 20 min physical training session. Exercise intensity was quantified as metabolic equivalents of t

A non-enzymatic C-type lectin from bullhead shark Heterodontus japonicus skin amplifies coagulation via common-pathway downstream of factor Xa.

The rapid arrest of bleeding after injury is essential for survival, and blood coagulation is the central mechanism of hemostasis. We previously reported that a C-type lectin (HjCL) present in the skin mucus of the bullhead shark (Heterodontus japonicus) exhibits procoagulant activity; however, its underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we evaluated the effects of HjCL on pathway-specific clotting reactions using prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) assays. HjCL accelerated aPTT reagent-triggered clotting, as indicated by the shortened
