BACKGROUND: As the number of revision total knee arthroplasties (rTKAs) continues to rise, there is increasing interest in the use of contemporary rotating hinge prostheses. These devices often incorporate porous cones to fill bone defects and enhance long-term fixation. This study evaluated the clinical and functional outcomes and survivorship in rTKA patients utilizing a rotating hinge prosthesis with flexible titanium (FT) cones, porous tantalum (PT) cones, or no cones.
METHODS: From December 2014 to July 2023, 251 patients who underwent rTKA with a rotating hinge prosthesis were identifie

There were 63 outpatient medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasties (UKAs) performed by Mako robotic assistance by six surgeons. There were 40 men and 23 women who had a mean age of 65.1 years (range, 38 to 80). Their mean body mass index (BMI) was 29.6 (range 21.8 to 39.2), and 28 patients had a BMI over 35. Overall, patient perceptions of the procedure were excellent (mean 9.2 rating of 10), which was not different by sex or body mass index. There were no 30-day complications or readmissions. At one year, there was one case revised for maltracking, resulting in a revision rate of 1.6% (1 ou

BACKGROUND: Knee synovial chondromatosis (SC) is a rare joint disorder involving loose cartilaginous bodies, leading to pain, swelling, and impaired function. Arthroscopy has become a primary treatment option, but its efficacy and recurrence rates remain debated. This systematic review evaluates the effectiveness and safety of arthroscopic interventions, focusing on loose body removal, partial synovectomy, and total synovectomy.
METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed and EMBASE (1985-2024) identified studies on arthroscopic treatment of knee SC, adhering to PRISMA guidelines. Inclusion criter

BACKGROUND: Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) is an idiopathic process and can progress from stable to cartilage fragmentation with the formation of loose bodies in the affected joint capsule. Loose bodies in the knee may wear out the articular cartilage, tendons, and ligaments, leading to a series of problems, such as joint locking, bouncing, joint effusion, and meniscus tear; therefore, early recognition and treatment of intraarticular loose bodies are important to achieve favorable long-term outcomes.
CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old male presented with a 1-month history of right knee discomfort.

BACKGROUND: The survivorship of tibial metaphyseal cones following revision total knee arthroplasty (rTKA) has been reported. However, literature comparing cone midterm survivorship (from five to 10 years after rTKA) between septic (infection history on the joint) and aseptic revisions is scarce. Therefore, we sought: (1) to assess the overall tibial cone survivorship rate after rTKA; and (2) to compare cone survivorship between septic and aseptic revisions.
METHODS: A multicenter retrospective chart review of 231 patients who underwent rTKA using highly porous titanium tibial metaphyseal con

To improve the maneuverability and agility of jumping robots, a variety of steerable jumping mechanisms have been actively studied. The steering ability enables a robot to reach a particular target by altering its jumping direction. To make this possible, we propose a miniature steerable jumping robot based on froghopper's jumping principle: Moment cancellation is achieved via synchronous leg rotation, and a predictable jumping direction is achieved through an almost zero stiffness femoro-tibial joint. To satisfy these working principles, the robot is designed to have a four-bar shaped body st

OBJECTIVE: The synovial chondromatosis is an exceptionally rare benign condition, predominantly found in the knee joint, and can result in pain, restricted mobility, and potential irreversible damage to the joint and cartilage. Despite the utilization of arthroscopic techniques in the surgical management of synovial chondromatosis, there remains a paucity of long-term assessment regarding its efficacy. The main objectives of this study include: (i) investigating the long-term efficacy of arthroscopic surgery in patients with knee synovial chondromatosis;(ii) identifying factors influencing fun

We present a unique case of a man in his 60s with a knee intra-articular loose body causing a compression neuropathy on his common peroneal (fibular) nerve (CPN). This neuropathy caused a reduction in function of his leg's motor function causing a foot drop. Through a strong clinical interview and focused clinical examination, the neuropathy was localised, and the diagnosis was reinforced through nerve conduction studies and imaging. The intra-articular loose body was surgically excised after the careful isolation and decompression of the peroneal nerve. This resulted in a marked improvement i

Dengue fever is the most common zoonotic infection with a transmissible mechanism of virus transmission in tropical and subtropical countries. In the first two decades of the 21st century, a significant increase in dengue fever cases was registered in more than 120 countries worldwide. The article presents a family imported case of dengue fever in a 34-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman who fell ill within 3 days after returning from Thailand (Phuket Island). In both cases, there was an acute onset of the disease with an increase in body temperature to (39-40°С), severe weakness, severe musc

Tabetic arthropathy is a chronic, destructive neurogenic disease, that is considered the late stage of syphilis. The causative agent is Trepanoma pallidum, a spirochete bacterium that is sexually transmitted. It is characterized by extensive destruction and joint deformity in an indolent context. Syphilis serology confirms the diagnosis. Prevention requires early treatment of syphilis with penicillin G. We report the case of a 59-year-old patient with a history of an untreated syphilitic chancre at the age of 32 years who presented with significant joint deformity of the knee that had been evo

Synovial osteochondromatosis is a rare benign disorder characterised by cartilaginous metaplasia of the synovium, most often affecting large joints. We describe an unusual case in the sternoclavicular joint of an adolescent, who presented with a localised swelling. Imaging demonstrated multiple calcified loose bodies, and the diagnosis was confirmed histologically following surgical excision. Management consisted of removal of the loose bodies with consideration of synovectomy to reduce recurrence. Early recognition is crucial to prevent progressive joint damage.

Transforming the orthopedic landscape, hip arthroscopy pioneers a minimally invasive surgical approach for diagnosing and addressing hip pathologies. With its origins dating back to Burman's 1931 cadaveric study, this groundbreaking technique gained clinical relevance in 1939 through Takagi's report. However, the 1980s marked the actual emergence of hip arthroscopy for treating a wide range of hip disorders. Now, a staple in modern orthopedics, hip arthroscopy empowers patients with previously undiagnosed and untreated hip conditions, enabling them to obtain relief and reclaim their lives. By

The acute locked knee is an orthopaedic emergency requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment. It can be classified as acute or chronic. The term 'locked knee' refers to a knee that demonstrates fixed flexion or which has a 'block' to complete extension. Some degree of active or passive extension may be achievable, but not full extension. The most frequent causes of a locked knee are a meniscal tear, rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament or loose bodies. Magnetic resonance imaging is the gold standard in diagnostic imaging. Knee arthroscopy is considered the gold standard in management. This

INTRODUCTION: There is a paucity of literature regarding a neglected shoulder dislocation, as it is unusual to miss it clinically due to the apparent deformity. Nevertheless, in some cases, particularly those who receive primary treatment from a local bonesetter, they may present with a neglected shoulder dislocation. In the absence of comprehensive studies, health-care professionals have to resort to lower-tier evidence and practical experience to guide their treatment decisions. Therefore, most of the treatment recommendations are based on level four studies and the literature for recurrent

INTRODUCTION: Sacral fractures, which can occur in young individuals following road traffic accidents or falls from a height, as well as in elderly individuals with osteoporosis after minor trauma, are considered a diverse type of fracture. The incidence of non-osteoporotic sacral fractures is estimated to be 2.1/100,000 people, whereas osteoporotic fractures are estimated to affect 1-5% of elderly individuals at risk. Triangular osteosynthesis is a relatively new fixation technique used as a surgical treatment for unstable sacral fractures. It combines transverse fixation with lumbo-pelvis di

The author herein presents an unusual case of eustachian tube calcification masquerading as loose radiopacities in the temporomandibular joints on a panoramic image, creating a diagnostic challenge. The patient, a 72-year-old woman, presented to the dental service for implant treatment to improve her masticatory function. A cone-beam computed tomography scan was performed and reviewed by a board-certified oral and maxillofacial radiologist. The scan showed no evidence of calcifications in the temporomandibular joints; however, it revealed nodular calcifications within the cartilaginous portion
