Incidence of meniscal injury in cats with cranial cruciate ligament ruptures.

This retrospective study evaluated the incidence of meniscal injury in cats with cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) ruptures. Medical records for cats diagnosed with CCL ruptures treated by a lateral fabellotibial suture (LFS) were reviewed for signalment, history, physical examination and surgical findings. Ninety-five cats (98 stifles) met the inclusion criteria. The incidence of meniscal injuries in feline CCL deficient stifles was 67%. Isolated medial meniscal injuries were found in 55 stifles (56%), isolated lateral meniscal injuries were found in 5 stifles (5%), and lateral and medial menis

Anatomical study of the human discomallear ligament using cone beam computed tomography imaging and morphological observations.

In the present study, the human discomallear ligament (DML) was observed in structures at both macroscopic and cone beam computed tomography levels. Assessments were made regarding the distribution of calcitonin-gene-related peptide (CGRP), protein gene-product (PGP) 9.5, and substance P (SP) of the DML based on immunohistochemical analyses of the anatomical properties of jaw movements using 27 Japanese human cadavers (mean, 79.3 +/- 8.6 years; male, 74.9 +/- 8.0; female, 82.8 +/- 7.5). The DML of the anterior region was connected to the TMJ disc. The DML of the posterior region was attached t

Etiological factors of temporomandibular joint disorders.

The temporomandibular joint receives its name from the two bones that enter into its formation, namely the temporal bone and the mandible. This complex synovial system is composed of two temporomandibular joints together with their articulating ligaments and masticatory muscles. This articulation affects other synovial joints that relate specifically to masticatory function. The causes of temporomandibular disorders are complex and multifactorial. There are numerous factors that can contribute to temporomandibular disorders. In some instances a single factor may serve one or all of these roles

Unusually severe limitation of the jaw attributable to fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva: a case report with cone-beam computed tomography findings.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare hereditary connective tissue disease characterized by the progressive ectopic ossification of ligaments, tendons, and facial and skeletal muscles throughout life. Symptoms begin in childhood as localized soft tissue swellings. Immobility and articular dysfunction appear with involvement of the spine and proximal extremities. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a critical component involved in the maxillofacial region, resulting in severe limitation of masticatory function, although TMJ involvement is rare. We report a case of FOP presentin

[Animal model of humeral joint for shoulder arthroscopy training].

UNLABELLED: Shoulder arthroscopy used since sixties of the XXth century, becomes now dominating operative technique. Surgeon's skills are most important that's why perfect training model is still needed. Ideal training model for shoulder arthroscopy should combine best possible image of human anatomical structures, good accessibility and low price. Despite of great similarity, animal shoulder joint differs from human one. More spherical shape of animal glenoid gives better support for humeral head. As a result of different shape of glenoid, labrum is significantly less developed, and can actua

[Spontaneous patellar tendon rupture as a result of morbid obesity].

We present the case of spontaneous damage to the patellar tendon in a patient with pathologic obesity (BMI = 41), without comorbid conditions. Damage occurred during normal load combined with the movement of the knee extension when inserting a foot in flip-flops. Surgical treatment was performed in a matter of urgency and the patellar tendon was sutured in half the length of. Six weeks of immobilization was used and then rehabilitation. After four months efficient gait and a good range of motion was achieved. Please note that obesity is a disease of civilization and cause further disease. Thes

High-fat diet accelerates progression of osteoarthritis after meniscal/ligamentous injury.

INTRODUCTION: Increasing obesity and type 2 diabetes, in part due to the high-fat (HF) Western diet, parallels an increased incidence of osteoarthritis (OA). This study was undertaken to establish a causal relation between the HF diet and accelerated OA progression in a mouse model and to determine the relative roles of weight gain and metabolic dysregulation in this progression. METHODS: Five-week-old C57BL/6 mice were placed on HF (60% kcal) or low-fat (lean, 10% kcal) diets for 8 or 12 weeks before transecting the medial collateral ligament and excising a segment of the medial meniscus of

Joint appendages: the structures which have historically been overlooked in arthritis research and therapy development.

Rheumatologists have largely conceptualised joint disease in inflammatory and degenerative arthritis in terms of bone, cartilage and the synovial lining, but have tended to overlook other integral components of the joints which are attached close to joint margins. We discuss these structures under the umbrella term of 'appendages'. These structures include ligaments, tendons, entheses or joint insertions, regional fibrocartilages, bursae and other peri-articular joint structures including fat pads and nails. In this review, we highlight how these structures play key pathophysiological roles in

Early diagnosis crucial in ankylosing spondylitis.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory autoimmune disorder that predominantly affects the spine. If untreated it may cause significant morbidity. Early diagnosis is particularly important as newer therapies are able to contain this condition and even induce remission. AS affects about 0.2-0.5% of the population. It is at least twice as common in men and most often manifests in the third to fifth decades. It is estimated that up to 5% of patients with chronic lower back pain in primary care have inflammatory disease. Although only 1% of patients with HLA-B27 develop AS, 90-95% of patien

Reduced pre-pregnancy proteinuria is associated with improving postnatal maternal renal outcomes in IgA nephropathy women.

AIMS: In patients with immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy, postnatal renal outcomes vary depending on kidney function and proteinuria. However, whether a decrease in proteinuria prior to conception improves postnatal maternal renal outcomes is unknown. METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective study. A total of 52 pregnant women with biopsy-proven IgA nephropathy were enrolled in the study between January 2004 and December 2009. We collected data on proteinuria, which had been measured 1 year prior to conception, at conception, during pregnancy, and postnatally. The study outcomes inclu

A large retro-odontoid cystic mass caused by transverse ligament degeneration with atlantoaxial subluxation leading to granuloma formation and chronic recurrent microbleeding case report.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Noninfectious nontumorous retro-odontoid masses are rare, and masses have not been reported to extensively compress the spinal cord. We encountered a case of a large retro-odontoid lesion that extensively compressed the spinal cord. CASE REPORT: A 76-year-old-man reported experiencing a sudden onset of neck pain, hand and foot paresthesia, dysarthria, and dysphagia. When symptoms had not eased by 10 days of treatment with external stabilization and bed rest, he was referred to our hospital. Dynamic radiographs of the cervical spine showed that the atlantodental interval wi

Giant mucocoele of the maxillary antrum: a case report.

Fungal secondary metabolites are synthesized by complex biosynthetic pathways catalized by enzymes located in different subcellular compartments, thus requiring traffic of precursors and intermediates between them. The β-lactam antibiotics penicillin and cephalosporin C serve as an excellent model to understand the molecular mechanisms that control the subcellular localization of secondary metabolites biosynthetic enzymes. Optimal functioning of the β-lactam biosynthetic enzymes relies on a sophisticated temporal and spatial organization of the enzymes, the intermediates and the final products

Impact of inflammation on male fertility.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe condition that markedly reduces exercise capacity and survival in the affected patient population. PAH includes primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) and pulmonary hypertension associated with collagen vascular diseases, congenital systemic-to-pulmonary shunts, portal hypertension and HIV infection. All these conditions share virtually identical obstructive pathologic changes of the pulmonary microcirculation and probably similar pathobiologic processes. The pathophysiology is characterized by a progressive increase in pulmonary vascular resista

Granulocytic sarcoma of the oral cavity in a chronic myeloid leukemia patient: an unusual presentation.

UNLABELLED: The clerkship represents the initial stage of medical students' clinical practice, during which clinical reasoning training is emphasized. However, clinical reasoning training during the clerkship encounters several challenges, including limited teaching time and difficulties in adapting to the clinical environment. We developed a three-step clinical reasoning course based on David Kolb's Experiential Learning Cycle model to bridge the learning gaps in the existing clerkship model and then evaluated its impact on performance in clerkship summative evaluations. The three-step clinic
