The crossing-sign angle and trochlear dysplasia length: New radiographic parameters to measure the dysplastic trochlea.

INTRODUCTION: Trochlear dysplasia is one of the most relevant anatomic factors predisposing patients to patellofemoral instability and its recurrence. This study introduces two novel radiographic measurements: the crossing-sign angle and the trochlear dysplasia length. METHODS: A concordance study was conducted in patients aged 10-40 years with at least one episode of patellofemoral dislocation and radiographic evidence of trochlear dysplasia on a true lateral knee radiograph. Three observers independently measured the crossing-sign angle, the trochlear dysplasia length, and bump height, as w

Evaluation of the clicky hip as a screening tool in the diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip.

AIMS: The early diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is important because treatment in early infancy is usually nonoperative. A consensus statement from the British Society for Children's Orthopaedic Surgery identified ongoing uncertainty regarding the predictive value of a documented clicky hip. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between a clicky hip at the newborn or six- to eight-week examination and pathological DDH requiring treatment in a selective screening programme in the UK. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected reg

Coxofemoral luxation in 112 cattle - a retrospective analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Coxofemoral luxation (luxatio ossis femoris) requires special consideration among orthopedic conditions of the pelvic area in cattle. The disease has a guarded prognosis, and affected cattle are often recumbent and therefore must not be shipped to a slaughter facility. Our study aimed to compile epidemiologically relevant aspects of coxofemoral luxation and facilitate the diagnosis in the field and at referral clinics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 116 cases of coxofemoral luxation and subluxation in 112 cattle in relation to the housing system used and th

Current Clinical Concepts: Assessment and Management of Acetabular Dysplasia.

Acetabular dysplasia, a nonarthritic hip joint pain condition in active young and middle-aged adults, is distinct from femoroacetabular impingement syndrome. Despite increasing clinical recognition of acetabular dysplasia over the past decade, it remains a challenging orthopaedic condition for athletic trainers to manage due to the complexities of diagnosis, concurrent psychological implications, and overlap with other hip and spine pathologies. Acetabular dysplasia is more prevalent in females and is diagnosed primarily through clinical presentation and radiographic evidence. Altered femoral

Trauma-related simultaneous asymmetric bilateral hip dislocation: A case report.

Trauma-related simultaneous asymmetric bilateral hip dislocations (SABHDs) are extremely rare cases. High-energy trauma plays a role in their etiology. Traumatic hip dislocations account for 2-5% of all dislocations. Of all hip dislocations, 90% are posterior and 10% anterior. Bilateral traumatic hip dislocation is exceedingly rare. Asymmetric dislocations are even rarer, accounting for approximately 0.01-0.02% of all joint dislocations. This study aimed to evaluate a patient with trauma-related SABHD through a case presentation and discuss therapeutic options. A 27-year-old male patient was d

Posttraumatic Pisotriquetral Instability: Case Report.

Posttraumatic pisotriquetral instability is an uncommon and underdiagnosed injury that can lead to significant morbidity if missed. The limited literature available describes this pathology in the form of case reports. The sturdiness and stability of its ligamentous attachments may explain why dislocations of the pisiform are so rare. We present the case of a patient who presented with pisotriquetral instability following trauma and a pisiform dislocation with triquetum fracture. Treatment included pisiform resection with excellent results. The literature and treatment outcomes are reviewed.

Bulk RNA sequence analysis of the articular disc-retrodiscal tissue complex in a TMJ-OA rat model with anterior disc displacement.

OBJECTIVE: Articular disc displacement (ADD) is a major pathology of temporomandibular disorders that increases temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) risk. However, its effect on gene expression in the retrodiscal tissue remains unexplored. This research elucidated the genetic alterations in the articular disc-retrodiscal tissue complex (ADRC) caused by ADD and investigated their association with TMJ-OA. METHODS: ADD was induced in the temporomandibular joints of rats, which were euthanised after 8 weeks post-op. RNA sequencing was performed on the ADRC (n = 3/group), and histologic

Establishing Normative Cartilaginous Acetabular Index Values in North American Children for Evaluation of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip.

BACKGROUND: Cartilaginous acetabular index (CAI) factors in the cartilaginous component of acetabular morphology and may enhance evaluation of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). No studies have established normal CAI values in North American children to date. The purpose of this study was to describe CAI in young patients and to determine the inter- and intrarater reliability of this measurement. METHODS: Patients aged 6 months to 5 years who underwent pelvic MRI between 2010 and 2025 were included. We excluded patients with bilateral DDH, prior hip surgery, neurological disease, or ot

Surgical and Conservative Treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Anterior Disc Displacement in Adults: A Cohort Study on Condylar Remodelling.

BACKGROUND: Surgical and conservative treatments are primary options for anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDWoR) of the temporomandibular joint. However, their long-term effects on condylar remodelling remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate and compare the long-term effects of both strategies on condylar remodelling. METHODS: After being informed of both treatment options, patients with ADDWoR independently selected either disc repositioning surgery or conservative treatment with intra-articular injections combined with stabilization splints. CBCT scans were obtained at

Treatment Following a First-Time Anterior Shoulder Dislocation: What Does the Evidence Tell Us?

Shoulder dislocations are an incredibly common orthopaedic injury. Although these injuries can affect patients of almost any age, those between 15 and 20 years of age have been identified as a population at risk. Aside from young age, male sex and participation in contact and overhead sports have also been identified as additional risk factors for these injuries. Despite the frequency with which shoulder dislocations occur, there is controversy regarding the optimal treatment algorithm following a first-time shoulder dislocation. Historically, patients were almost always treated with short-ter

Timing of first-time dislocation varied by head size after total hip arthroplasty for nontraumatic osteonecrosis.

PURPOSE: The cumulative probability of a first-time dislocation (CPD) after total hip arthroplasties (THAs) with a 22-mm head was reported in 2004 to rise steadily to 7% at 25 years. Later reports employing larger heads indicated that dislocations were concentrated in shorter periods after THA. Therefore, dislocations may occur differently over time depending on head sizes, which has not been clearly demonstrated. The purpose was to examine this hypothesis. METHODS: With first-time dislocation as the endpoint, the Cox proportional-hazards regression model and the Kaplan-Meier analyses were ap

Two-stage deep learning approach for screening for anterior disk displacement of the temporomandibular joint using orthopantomograms.

This study aimed to develop a deep learning-based approach for the initial screening of anterior disk displacement (DD) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) using orthopantomograms (OPG). A two-stage deep learning model was proposed: first, regions of interest were detected on orthopantomogram images using YOLOv5s; second, a classification model based on ResNet-18 and DANet was trained on magnetic resonance imaging–verified labels to identify TMJ DD. Diagnostic performance was evaluated through multi-class and binary classification analyses. In three-class classification (normal disk position,

Morphologic changes in the glenoid after arthroscopic Bankart repair using the double-row technique.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic Bankart repair (ABR) using the knotless double-row technique, called the knotless double anchor footprint fixation (DAFF), involves inserting anchors into the scapular neck, passing sutures through the anterior inferior glenohumeral ligament complex, and using face anchors to secure the ligament complex under increased tension. In single-row arthroscopic Bankart repair, a postoperative reduction in glenoid width is frequently observed. This phenomenon is associated with mechanical stress shielding at the anterior glenoid rim, particularly in the area situated anterior

Postmortem findings in lame cattle which underwent on farm emergency slaughter in Norway.

According to on-farm emergency slaughter (OFES) veterinary certificates almost half of OFES cases in Norway are the result of locomotory disorders. However, beyond certification the diagnosis of these cases is unconfirmed. The aim of this study was to describe the gross lesions found at PME of cattle that underwent OFES for disorders of locomotion. During 2023, OFES cases entering two slaughterhouses underwent a regular PME and the pathological findings recorded. Complementary data were obtained from the veterinary certificate and Norwegian Food Safety Authority's record system. In total, 492
