Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV) that can lead to chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, and it is one of the main causes of liver disease-related deaths globally and in China. The prevention and control of hepatitis C have consistently been priorities in China. A national seroepidemiological survey conducted in 2020 showed that the weighted prevalence of anti-HCV positivity among individuals aged 1-69 years in China was 0.28%, while the weighted prevalence of HCV RNA positivity was 0.15%, corresponding to an estimated 5.54 million indiv

Adherence to antiviral therapy is essential for viral suppression in chronic hepatitis B (CHB), yet its effect on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains uncertain. We examined the association between nucleos(t)ide analog (NA) adherence and HCC risk, focusing on tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) versus entecavir (ETV). Treatment-naïve adults with CHB initiating TAF or ETV were identified from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, Republic of Korea. Adherence was measured using the medication possession ratio, with high adherence defined as ≥ 90%, and the primary outcome was HCC incidenc

Patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) frequently present with steatotic liver disease (SLD) and cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs). This study aimed to evaluate the impact of SLD and CMRFs on liver-related outcomes (LROs) in CHC patients after HCV eradication. This study evaluated 21,972 CHC patients who received curative antivirals in Taiwan. LROs included newly developed hepatocellular carcinoma and liver decompensation. During a follow-up period of 71,000 person-years (PYs), 745 (3.4%) patients developed LROs (annual incidence of 1.05%). The annual incidence of LRO (136.2 vs. 80.7 per 1

This study aims to develop a 2.5D deep learning framework leveraging non-contrast CT scans for early prediction of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in hepatitis B-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) patients. This retrospective study enrolled 228 ACLF patients meeting APASL criteria from two centers. Participants were divided into training (n = 102), internal validation (n = 44), and external testing (n = 82) cohorts. Non-contrast CT scans (5 mm slices) from six scanner models were preprocessed to 1 × 1 × 1 mm³ isotropic resolution with windowing (30-110 HU). Liver ROIs were manually segm

BACKGROUD AND AIM: With the rising prevalence of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) co-occurring with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), an in-depth investigation into the impact and mechanisms of MAFLD on CHB is urgently needed. Prior studies have reported that patients with concomitant CHB and MAFLD exhibit lower levels of hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication; however, the underlying mechanistic basis remains unclear. Accumulating evidence indicates that induction of apoptosis is a critical mechanism for HBV clearance. Therefore, it remains to be determined whether lipotoxic

BACKGROUND: Low-level viremia (LLV) during nucleos(t)ide analogue therapy for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is clinically relevant, but its biological basis in children remains unclear. We investigated the clinical features of pediatric LLV and sought host factors linking incomplete virological suppression to stress adaptation and profibrotic signaling.
METHODS: Children with CHB who initiated entecavir therapy between 2019 and 2024 were retrospectively enrolled. LLV and maintained virological response (MVR) were defined by serum HBV DNA at week 48. Longitudinal trajectories were analyzed using g

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Novel regimens aimed at achieving functional cure of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) in virologically suppressed participants require the withdrawal of nucleos(t)ide analogue (NA). However, data from clinical trials are limited.
METHODS: Piranga is a phase II platform trial that evaluated four xalnesiran regimens with or without an immunomodulator in virologically suppressed participants with CHB. All participants continued the established NA therapy until NA stopping criteria were met at the end of treatment or during follow-up. Participants who stopped NA were monitored and res

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains a major cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Australia, despite the availability of effective, subsidized antiviral therapy. We aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, HBV care cascade, and outcomes among people with HBV-related HCC in Victoria, Australia.
METHODS: We conducted a multicenter cohort study of all incident HCC cases across eight tertiary health networks in Victoria, Australia. Cases were identified retrospectively (January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019) and prospectively (January 1, 2020 to October 17, 2022). The p

BACKGROUND: In patients with advanced liver fibrosis, one of the most common complications after the development of clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) is the appearance of esophageal varices (EV), which require prophylaxis with nonselective beta-blockers (NSBB) to reduce the risk of bleeding. However, there is no practical, simple tool to predict the development of esophageal varices. The aim of the study was to validate the Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) Plus score as a predictor of EV in a cohort of patients with advanced liver fibrosis due to hepatitis C virus infection (HCV).

UNLABELLED: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) has developed multiple means to disrupt host innate immune response to promote its replication. Protein kinase D1 (PKD1) is a serine/threonine kinase involved in cell proliferation and lipid metabolism. By analyzing the effect of PKD1 on HCV replication, we found that HCV activated PKD1 via protein kinase C (PKC) early in infection and induced the cleavage of PKD1 at later timepoints of infection via caspase-3. PKD1 silencing had no effect on HCV entry, but it reduced HCV RNA levels in cells, indicating an important role of PKD1 in promoting HCV replication.

PURPOSE: Tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF) and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) are usually used in pregnant women with hepatitis B virus (HBV), yet TAF has been associated with unfavorable lipid profiles in other HBV-infected groups. Data regarding the effects on the lipid profiles of pregnant women are scarce. This study compared the effects of TAF and TDF on lipid profiles in this population.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 650 HBV-infected pregnant women, grouped into TAF and TDF cohorts based on the antiviral regimen. Generalized linear models were used to compare the ef

Functional cure, defined as sustained hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) loss, remains a major goal in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) management. HBsAg kinetics during interferon (IFN)-based therapy are associated with treatment response and prognosis, but real-world data on weekly HBsAg dynamics remain limited. This retrospective real-world study enrolled 533 CHB patients treated with IFN monotherapy or IFN plus tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), or entecavir (ETV). Weekly HBsAg levels up to week 24 were analyzed using propensity score matching (PSM), subgroup analy

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) of the head and neck is a rare but rapidly progressive and life-threatening soft tissue infection that constitutes a true surgical emergency. Due to the complex anatomy of the cervicofacial region and the proximity to the upper airway, early diagnosis and management are particularly challenging, and delayed recognition is associated with high morbidity and mortality. This article aims to provide a concise and clinically oriented overview of the presentation, diagnostic pitfalls, and current management strategies for cervicofacial necrotizing fasciitis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a major global public health problem with devastating consequences, such as hepatocellular carcinoma. Currently, approved treatments are limited to interferon and nucleoside/nucleotide analogues for chronic hepatitis B and chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery for cancer. Both treatments have their limitations, making complete cure an elusive goal. Therefore, the identification of new therapeutic targets using medicinal plants and the development of new antiviral and anticancer strategies are of utmost importance.

Chronic HEV infection is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients, with rapid progression to advanced fibrosis. We present the case of a 71-year-old immunocompromised male with chronic liver disease due to hepatitis E, who experienced several episodes of HEV reactivation despite treatment with ribavirin. Thus, the treatment of the infection involves a challenge due to the lack of validated therapeutic options and the risk of viral reactivation after stopping treatment.

BACKGROUND: Maudsley Family Therapy (MFT), and its manualised version, Family-Based Therapy (FBT), are the only well-established treatment interventions for adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN), with treatment efficacy primarily measured by improvements in eating behaviours and weight restoration. A crucial component of this therapy is an intensive home-based refeeding intervention that requires a substantial commitment from parents for up to one year. While this treatment works to restore weight in a proportion of adolescents, very little is known about its impacts on family distress, relationshi
