Ligaments and tendons are heterogeneous structures composed of two distinct materials at the mm-length scale: fascicles and the interfascicular matrix (IFM). Many studies model the mechanics of ligaments and tendons using a spatially homogeneous, transversely isotropic mechanical model. However, recent studies have demonstrated that these two structures likely need to be modeled separately to explain failure behavior. Additionally, quantification of IFM mechanics would help to better understand the mechanical environment around cells in ligaments and tendons. While much work has been done to q

INTRODUCTION: Inexpensive consumer-grade wearable sensors have expanded possibilities to assess, monitor, or modify a runner's gait. However, it is unclear which sensor-measured gait metrics are strongly associated with internal loading at common injury locations.
PURPOSE: To measure the association between gait metrics measured by consumer-grade wearable sensors and internal forces at the Achilles tendon and the patellofemoral joint.
METHODS: 55 healthy runners wearing consumer-grade chest straps foot-pods completed a 38-minute run on an instrumented treadmill at 12 speeds from 70%-125% of

OBJECTIVE: Mental fatigue (MF) is known to impair psychobiological performance, yet its cross-dimensional impact on the neuromechanical control of reactive athletic movements remains underexplored. This study investigated the effects of MF on the cognitive-temporal and lower-limb biomechanical characteristics of table tennis athletes executing a reactive chasse-step.
METHODS: Twenty-four collegiate table tennis athletes (12 males, 12 females) completed a randomized, counterbalanced crossover study. Participants performed a choice-reaction chasse-step forehand topspin task following either a 4

BACKGROUND: The repeated bout effect (RBE) protects skeletal muscles from exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). While homologous contralateral RBE is well-documented, the existence of heterologous RBE-specifically whether lower limb conditioning can protect upper limb muscles-remains debated.
PURPOSE: This study investigated whether high-intensity eccentric exercise of the knee extensors attenuates eccentric exercise-induced neuromuscular fatigue and muscle stiffness and preserves neuromuscular control in the contralateral elbow flexors.
METHODS: Twenty-four sedentary young women were rando

Kinesthetic feedback gloves play a central role in immersive virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) by enabling the perception of object shape, stiffness, and spatial constraints. However, key challenges remain: 1) achieving a large stiffness contrast between free-space and constrained-space states, 2) enabling independent actuation on finger joints, and 3) maintaining lightweight, low-power wearable operation. Here, we introduce MagGami, a miniaturized origami-based variable-stiffness actuator weighing 1.2 g for distributed joint-space integration. By combining origami geometric interlocking w

BACKGROUND: Post-operative shoulder stiffness (POSS) is one of the most common complications following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) and is thought to be caused by pathologic changes in the anterosuperior soft-tissue structures of the glenohumeral joint. The aim of this study was to determine whether objective ultrasonographic evaluation can predict the occurrence of POSS at 1 year after surgery and to investigate the reliability of a newly developed ultrasonographic measurement method.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent ARCR at a single institu

In terms of new materials, innovative technologies, and advanced construction techniques, the prefabricated steel plate-concrete composite underground silo offers an effective solution to the key challenges of cost, construction duration, and waterproofing associated with conventional reinforced concrete underground silos. However, joints represent critical weak components in prefabricated structures, and the development of simple and efficient joint configurations is essential for the further advancement and application of novel prefabricated underground silos. To address this issue, two nove

INTRODUCTION: Flexor pollicis longus (FPL) tendon injuries in the thumb are surgically challenging and require careful postoperative rehabilitation to avoid complications such as tendon rupture, stiffness and impaired hand function. Rupture rates after FPL repairs are substantially higher than those reported for finger flexor tendons. Although controlled early active motion (EAM) is widely used following FPL repairs, rehabilitation protocols developed for finger flexor tendons may not be directly transferable to the thumb because of differences in anatomy, biomechanics and functional demands.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Accurate quantification of muscle strain is essential for understanding musculoskeletal mechanics. Ultrasound-based methods for estimating muscle strain commonly rely on muscles with clearly visible fascicles and aponeuroses. We aimed to develop a novel ultrasound image analysis method for estimating muscle strain, particularly in muscles with indistinct aponeuroses.
METHODS: Ultrasound B-mode images of the forearm flexor muscles were acquired during passive wrist extension in 16 healthy adults. Muscle strain was estimated using a feature-based tracking approach impl

BACKGROUND: Traditional transarticular distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ) pinning for bony mallet fingers risks stiffness and iatrogenic cartilage injury. This study compared a modified non-transarticular K-wire external fixator with traditional transarticular pinning for surgically treated bony mallet finger.
METHODS: This single-center prospective nonrandomized comparative cohort study included 120 adults with acute bony mallet finger. Sixty patients underwent traditional transarticular DIPJ pinning, and 60 underwent modified non-transarticular K-wire external fixation. The primary outcome

Stem cell lineage determination is governed not only by biochemical cues but also by the organization and force-generating state of the cytoskeleton, which integrates extracellular mechanical cues into transcriptional and epigenetic responses. Cytoskeletal organization and remodeling play essential roles in stem cell fate determination, as well as other relevant biological processes including development, tissue regeneration, and disease progression. In this review, we first outline the different types of cytoskeletal structures-actin filaments, microtubules, and intermediate filaments-and the

Identifying materials with intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity (κL) underpins thermoelectric and phase-change technologies, yet simple structural descriptors often fail to capture how chemical bonding controls lattice dynamics. Here, we compare thermal transport in two BeO polymorphs of identical chemistry and atomic mass: covalent zincblende (zb) and metavalent-like rocksalt (rs). Despite being denser, rs-BeO exhibits a κL more than an order of magnitude below zb-BeO (24 vs 357 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K), breaking the conventional density-κL correlation. Ab initio bonding analysis traces

OBJECTIVE: This prospectively enrolled cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the relationship between synovial fluid oxidative stress parameters and radiographic severity in patients with knee osteoarthritis and to determine whether these biomarkers reflect radiographic stage.
METHODS: A total of 98 patients aged 50 years and older with primary knee osteoarthritis were prospectively enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Radiological severity was classified using the Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grading system as early-stage (KL grades 1-2) and late-stage (KL grades 3-4). Clinical severity was e

Postoperative arthrofibrosis (PTAF) is a debilitating complication of orthopaedic surgery, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced quality of life. Antifibrotic agents (statins, angiotensin receptor blockers [ARBs], and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors [ACEIs]) have been proposed to mitigate PTAF, yet no systematic review has evaluated all three across major orthopaedic surgeries. This review synthesizes evidence on their use for preventing PTAF after shoulder, knee, and hip surgery. PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus were searched for clinical studies evaluating statins, ARBs, or ACEIs f

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common joint disorder causing disability, marked by pain and stiffness, with current therapies only relieving symptoms. This highlights the need for early biomarkers. The urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) is an indicator of renal dysfunction and systemic inflammation, while OA is also closely associated with inflammatory processes. However, the direct relationship between UACR and OA risk remains unclear. We investigated the prospective association between UACR and incident OA.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 445,860 UK Biobank participants without

Early detection of cartilage degeneration remains a critical unmet clinical need. While contrast-enhanced computed tomography shows promise in detecting early structural and compositional changes in articular cartilage, full adoption into clinical use requires a comprehensive understanding of how contrast agents affect cartilage function, including potential biomechanical alterations. This study investigates how exposure to two contrast agents, pre-clinical ultrasmall cationic tantalum oxide nanoparticles (Ta2O5-cNPs) and neutral iodixanol, approved for clinical use, affect the mechanical and
