Locked patellar dislocation due to osteophytes: two case reports with a focused literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Locked patellar dislocation is a rare injury in which the patella becomes irreducible due to mechanical obstruction. Osteophytes have been increasingly recognized as a cause of irreducibility, but the mechanisms remain incompletely characterized. CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1: A 41-year-old female sustained a locked lateral, vertical, intra-articular patellar dislocation following a motorcycle collision. An inferomedial patellar osteophyte was impacted against the medial femoral condyle and entrapped within soft tissue, requiring open reduction. Case 2: A 57-year-old female presente

An ozone injectable solution reduces structural cartilage degeneration in an ACLT rat model.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the leading cause of joint degeneration in the elderly, yet current treatment strategies remain inadequate. This study aimed to evaluate the chondroprotective effects of intra-articular Ozone Injectable Solution (OIS), a liposomal formulation containing ozone, hyaluronic acid, and 1% lidocaine, in a surgically induced knee OA model in rats. Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) for OA induction. Random allocation yielded five groups: control, lidocaine, single-dose OIS (OIS-1), three weekly OIS injections (OIS-3), and five

Linear arrangement of bony outgrowths of the distal phalanges of the foot in relation to ligamentous structures: a radiological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Long-term observation of patients with complaints involving the distal phalanx of the hallux (disturbances of nail plate growth, periungual fold changes, and abnormal alignment of the distal phalanx relative to the proximal phalanx) has drawn attention to recurrent bony changes on its lateral aspects. These observations provided part of the rationale for earlier anatomical studies, which confirmed the presence of the collateral ligaments of the distal phalanges of the foot macroscopically and histologically. Such bony changes have previously been classified as exostoses, osteophyte

Association Between Joint Effusion and Degenerative Osseous Changes of the Temporomandibular Joint: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Joint effusion (JE) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been proposed as a potential imaging marker of intra-articular inflammation and degenerative involvement in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). However, its association with temporomandibular joint degenerative joint disease (TMJ-DJD) remains unclear. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science was performed from inception to May 2026. Observational studies assessing MRI-detected JE and TMJ degenerative osseous changes in patients with TMDs were included. Pooled odds ratios

Automated CT-based quantification of knee osteophytes for robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty: a multi-cohort study.

Preoperative computed tomography (CT) is routinely acquired for planning robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty (TKA), yet osteophyte burden is not quantitatively characterized. We developed automated CT-based osteophyte quantification and evaluated it against blinded de novo expert-consensus annotations and an intraoperative accessible resected osteophyte volume reference. A human-in-the-loop 3-dimensional U-Net was developed using 387 knee CT scans. The frozen model was evaluated against blinded de novo expert-consensus annotations in two independent external cohorts (100 knees each). Spat

Lesser Occipital Neuralgia Secondary to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Mask Headgear: A Case Report

Occipital neuralgia is a well-characterised cause of unilateral head and neck pain arising from irritation of the greater or lesser occipital nerve (LON). External headwear (helmets, goggles, and tight headbands) is a recognised trigger of pericranial pain, formally classified by the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3) as external-compression or external-traction headache. To our knowledge, lesser occipital neuralgia specifically attributed to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask headgear has not been previously reported. We report an 81-year-old man referred

Improvements in Return to Work Following Lumbar Discectomy With a Bone-Anchored Annular Closure Device.

INTRODUCTION: The true incidences of genitourinary conditions in the modern era are not completely known. We sought to determine the incidence of genitourinary abnormalities in a group of asymptomatic adult patients undergoing axial imaging with virtual colonoscopy. METHODS: We performed a post-hoc analysis of imaging results from a prospective, IRB-approved study that randomized patients to screening "virtual" CT colonography (CTC) followed by standard endoscopic colonoscopy. CTC scans were reviewed separately by an independent radiologist and a urologist for genitourinary abnormalities. Gen

Osteophyte Growth Over 10 Years in the Fingers of High-Level Climbers and Contributing Factors.

Although osteophytes in climbers' fingers are known as part of a mechano-adaption, the progression of osteophytes and contributing factors during an advanced elite climber's career is still unknown. This study analyzes osteophyte growth over 10 years for each phalangeal head and base of all proximal and distal interphalangeal joints (PIP and DIP) individually as well as the impact of potential climbing related influencing factors. Furthermore, the osteophytes located at the palmar neck of the proximal phalanx (palmar neck osteophytes) were investigated separately and joint space narrowing was

MAVS signaling exacerbates chondrocytes extracellular matrix degradation in osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent age-related joint disorder with limited treatment options. Chronic activation of the innate immune response in chondrocytes plays a key role in OA progression. However, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Here, we report that mitochondrial antiviral signaling protein (MAVS) exacerbates cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation in OA. MAVS activation is observed in chondrocytes from both OA patients and the destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) mouse model. Both constitutive and chondrocyte-specific MAVS knockout alleviate c

OGT regulates histone demethylation and alleviates osteoarthritis progression by O-GlcNAcylation of KDM6B.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common orthopedic disease characterized by cartilage degeneration, osteophyte formation, and synovial hyperplasia. Although dysregulated O-GlcNAcylation has been implicated in various musculoskeletal and inflammatory disorders, its specific role and molecular targets in OA pathogenesis remain largely unexplored. In this study, we aimed to conduct a multidimensional investigation to demonstrate and delineate the chondrocyte-specific functions and mechanisms of O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) during OA progression. METHODS: To explore the mechanisms of OA progress

Cationic liposome-mediated intra-articular delivery of lorecivivint for osteoarthritis treatment.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease worldwide causing cartilage loss, inflammation and pain. Lorecivivint (LOR) is a new disease-modifying osteoarthritis drug (DMOAD) that targets the Wnt pathway to improve cartilage regeneration and reduce the pro-inflammatory cytokines production. However, its advancement in the clinical evaluation is facing certain challenges due to poor solubility and fast clearance from the joint. Our study is the first to improve LOR delivery using cationic liposomes for intra-articular injection. DSPC-Chol-DOTAP-based liposomes were formulated using mic

Erianin protects chondrocytes against IL-1β-induced oxidative stress and ferroptosis by activating GPX4/STING signaling in osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Erianin (Eri) has been known for its analgesic and antipyretic properties. This research focuses on impact of Eri on chondrocyte viability, inflammatory cytokine production, extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation, and ferroptosis, which are key factors in cartilage diseases. METHODS: The mouse model of osteoarthritis (OA) was induced by destabilization of medial meniscus (DMM). Chondrocytes were treated with different concentrations of Eri and exposed to IL-1β to simulate disease conditions. The chondrocytes were induced to undergo ferroptosis using erastin (Era), and ferroptosis

Dihydrolipoic acid suppresses ferroptosis in chondrocytes to ameliorate the progression of osteoarthritis by modulating the FOXO1/TXNIP signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA), a common degenerative joint disorder, currently lacks effective therapeutic strategies to alleviate its progression. This study aims to investigate the function and underlying mechanisms of dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) in inhibiting ferroptosis in chondrocytes and alleviating OA progression. METHODS: Mouse primary chondrocytes were exposed to IL-1β to induce ferroptosis and treated with DHLA in vitro, followed by the assessment of ferroptosis-related markers and indicators of chondrocyte anabolism and catabolism. The underlying therapeutic mechanisms of DHLA in O

Artemisia-derived carbon dots with excellent pharmacological activities and ROS scavenging for osteoarthritis treatment.

The pharmacological activities of traditional herbal medicine-derived carbon dots (THM-CDs) render them highly promising for applications in biomedicine. However, the interactions between THM-CDs and intracellular proteins have yet to be fully elucidated. Herein, inspired by the traditional vinegar-processing of Artemisia argyi (A. argyi), acetic acid-treated Artemisia argyi-derived carbon dots (AA-CDs) demonstrate excellent resistance to iron death via efficient ROS scavenging and Fe2+ chelating. Notably, multi-omics analysis uncovers a novel whereby AA-CDs directly target and stabilize heat
