Studying one hundred cases of simple gonarthrosis we found only one supra trochlear femoral erosion (STFE). Such a lesion was discovered in 14 cases among 150 chondrocalcinosis with arthrosic lesions. The cases involving STFE trend to a commun marked chondro-osteolytic evolution. Criteria have been developed for radioisotope scanning of bone with an eight-colour-display rectilinear scanner, to differentiate metastases from degenerative spinal disease. If the area of increased uptake is two or more colours "hotter" than normal, this is probably due to metastases even if degenerative spinal disease coexists. The positivity of a scan due to degenerative spinal disease is a function of the degree of sclerosis adjacent to the intervertebral discs and apophyseal joints; it is not related to the degree of osteophyte formation.

A broad spectrum of disease entities affects the atlantoaxial-clival region. This area is readily accessible through a transoral approach, which offers capabilities for canal decompression and fusion. A case is reported that required transoral odontoidectomy with concurrent excision of an osteophyte from the base of an ununited odontoid fracture. Operative preparation, technique, and postoperative management are described in detail. The advantage and applications of the procedure are discussed.

The family of a child who developed symptoms and flexion contractures with protrusio acetabuli rapidly between the age of 8 and 11 was examined. The mother and one sib showed limitation of hip movements, while radiological criteria for protrusio were found in the mother and 4 of the proband's 8 sibs; only one had complained of pain. At the age of 16 the proband underwent bilateral total replacement arthroplasty; histologically the changes were those of fibrocartilaginous replacement and osteophyte formation.

Careful pathological examination of lumbar spines removed at autopsy has shown that degenerative changes are present in the intervertebral discs of all subjects by middle age. Forty-three patients with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome, confirmed by nerve conduction studies and treated by surgery, were compared clinically and radiologically with 43 age- and sex-matched control patients.
