Gender differences in the clinical response to balneotherapy in osteoarthritis patients: a scoping review.

Balneotherapy (BT) is widely used as a non-pharmacological intervention for osteoarthritis (OA); however, potential sex differences in treatment response remain poorly understood. This scoping review mapped randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of BT in OA to describe (i) how participants' sex was reported, (ii) whether sex-stratified or sex-by-treatment interaction analyses were performed and (iii) the sex-related findings of such analyses. Twenty-two publications, derived from 21 distinct RCTs, were included. Sex distribution was reported for 20 trials, including 2,211 participants (594 males

Real world evidence for glucosamine-chondroitin-calcium supplementation on joint pain.

BACKGROUND: Joint and bone diseases are major causes of morbidity worldwide. While glucosamine sulfate (GS) and chondroitin sulfate (CS) have demonstrated benefits in severe degenerative joint conditions, real-world evidence on the use patterns and reported outcomes of their combination with calcium (GCC) among individuals with mild-to-moderate joint discomfort remains limited. METHODS: This real-world study enrolled 9,090 adults who used GCC for ≥1 month and completed an online questionnaire; pre- and post-use symptom scores were analyzed among participants reporting joint symptoms or back p

Quadrangular Taper Cementless Designs Are Associated With Lower Risks of Postoperative Periprosthetic Fracture Compared With Cemented Stems and Other Cementless Designs Following Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although cementless stems are increasingly favored in primary total hip arthroplasty (pTHA), the impact of stem designs on postoperative complications, such as periprosthetic femoral fracture (PFF), remains debated. This study compared PFF rates between cemented and cementless pTHA, focusing on cementless stem geometries. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and CENTRAL from inception through March 2025. Eligible studies compared cemented and cementless stems in adults undergoing elective pTHAs, reported PFF incidence, and spe

Assessment of a Modified High-Dimensional Propensity Score Approach for UK Electronic Health Record Data: Evaluating Upper Gastrointestinal Safety of NSAIDs and COX-2 Inhibitors.

PURPOSE: This study extends a version of the high-dimensional propensity score (HDPS) recently modified for the UK electronic health record setting, by enriching primary care data with hospital data. The performance of this modified approach is assessed via the estimation of a well-established association, the reduced risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) in cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitor (COX-2i) users versus non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) users. METHODS: We conducted an active-comparator, new-user cohort study using UK primary care data from the Clinical Practice Researc

Probiotics and palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) for osteoarthritic pain: individual effects in a multiple baseline design study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of chronic pain. As healthcare services struggle to meet demand to treat chronic pain, many individuals self-manage their symptoms. Probiotics and palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) may be promising therapeutic options because of their anti-inflammatory properties. PEA is an endogenously produced N-acylethanolamine, considered "endocannabinoid-like" due to its structural similarity to endocannabinoids. While it has non-direct influence on the endocannabinoid system, it primarily acts via non-cannabinoid pathways, most notably through activ

Defining Inactivity of Juvenile Spondyloarthropathies: Delphi Study Among Pediatric Rheumatology Academy (PeRA) From Türkiye.

INTRODUCTION: Juvenile spondyloarthropathies (JSpA) are a group of chronic inflammatory diseases that differ in their clinical features and course from adult spondyloarthropathies and other subtypes of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Therefore, defining disease inactivity in JSpA requires specific criteria. This Delphi study aimed to establish a national consensus on its core clinical, laboratory, and radiological domains. METHODS: A total of 27 pediatric rheumatologists participated in the Delphi survey, conducted in two rounds. Participants were asked multiple-choice and Likert-type qu

Home-based respiratory-gated transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation for rheumatoid arthritis-a feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints, causing pain, inflammation, and long-term joint damage. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a promising non-pharmacological intervention for managing pain and inflammation, particularly when delivered in the exhalation phase of respiration. However, until now, the lack of portable equipment has meant the respiratory phase effects have not been evaluated outside of the laboratory or in a home setting. The primary goal of this study was to determine the feasibi

BACKGROUND: The improved management of craniosynostosis has let emerge concomitant anatomical, functional and clinical features that are frequently faced later in life (especially by syndromic patients) and might variably encompass the cranial nerves due to stenosis of bone foramina, abnormal intracranial pressure, or anomalous gene-driven development. Clinical consequences vary according to the affected nerves, the severity and the pathogenesis of nerve involvement but also might depend on early appropriate treatment. Vision, smell and hearing, but also feeding, swallowing and facial mimic or

Anticholinergic burden and bone health in rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Rheumatoid arthritis is associated with osteoporosis and falls. While anticholinergic burden increases fracture risk in older adults, its contribution to bone health in rheumatoid arthritis is unclear. The aim of this study was to determine if anticholinergic burden is an independent risk factor for osteoporosis and fracture in rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 120 adults with rheumatoid arthritis. Cumulative anticholinergic burden was quantified using eight validated scales (anticholinergic burden, Anticholinergic Risk Scale, Anticholinergic D

Evidence on the Relationships Between Total Fat Intake and Health Outcomes Other Than Unhealthy Weight Gain in Adults and Children: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Global guidance provides evidence-informed recommendations on total fat intake to prevent unhealthy weight gain in adults and children, however, evidence regarding total fat intake and other health outcomes, particularly non-communicable diseases (NCDs), also exists. This scoping review aimed to map and identify gaps in this body of evidence. METHODS: Four databases were searched from 2014 to 2024 for published systematic reviews (SRs), in any population, assessing the effects or associations of reduced total fat intake (e.g., ≤ 30% total energy [TE]), compared with usual fat in

Assessment of clinical and neuroimaging efficacy of treatment targeting tau pathology in mild cognitive impairment and mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease with hydromethylthionine mesylate using external control data.

BACKGROUND: Hydromethylthionine mesylate (HMTM) targets tau pathology and also has tau-independent symptomatic activity. A traditional randomised placebo-controlled trial (RCT) was precluded by loss of blinding due to urinary colouration and therapeutic activity at the minimum dose required to maintain blinding. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of HMTM in participants with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild to moderate dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: Because a traditional RCT was not feasible without loss of blinding, we compared HMTM 16 mg/day in TRx-237-039 with

Beta Blocker Use and Total Knee Arthroplasty Among United States Medicare Beneficiaries.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Preclinical evidence suggests beta blockers may reduce cartilage degradation and delay knee osteoarthritis (OA) progression. While beta blockers are widely used in patients with hypertension, their potential role in preventing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is unclear. Therefore, we assessed the association between beta blocker use and TKA in knee OA patients with hypertension. METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control study using a nationally representative sample of Medicare beneficiaries with newly diagnosed knee OA and prevalent hypertension from 2011 to 2020. Bene

The effect of sumac and cinnamon on lipid profile and quality of life in patients with acute myocardial infarction, type 2 diabetes, and overweight/obesity: study protocol for a randomized double-blind controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of global mortality, with ischemic heart disease, stroke, and other related conditions contributing to over one-third of deaths worldwide. The rising prevalence of CVDs is driven by aging populations and various risk factors, including poor diet, physical inactivity, and dyslipidemia. Recent studies suggest that natural supplements like sumac (Rhus coriaria L.) and cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum J. Presl) may have beneficial effects on lipid profiles and overall cardiovascular health. This study is designed to investigate the combined
