Epidemiology and clinical characteristics of polyarteritis nodosa in Japan: findings from a nationwide survey.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to elucidate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) in Japan. METHODS: We sent a secondary questionnaire to facilities randomly selected from a nationwide list of hospitals treating patients with PAN in the first nationwide epidemiological survey. RESULTS: We analyzed data from 547 patients out of the 868 reported in the first survey. Of these, 233 were male and 314 were female (male-to-female ratio, 1:1.3), with a mean age at diagnosis of 51.7 ± 17.6 years. Fever was observed in 43.4% of cases. Among organ ma

Spontaneous Bilateral Perirenal Hemorrhage during Chemotherapy with Liposomal Paclitaxel and Cyclophosphamide in Breast Cancer: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous perirenal hemorrhage (SPH) is rare and has not been previously linked to the combination of liposomal paclitaxel and cyclophosphamide. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of bilateral SPH temporally associated with this chemotherapy regimen. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old woman with stage IA breast cancer developed sequential bilateral perirenal hematomas after receiving liposomal paclitaxel plus cyclophosphamide, with inferred onset around day 19 of cycle 3 on the left and around day 16 of cycle 4 on the right. Imaging and laboratory analyses showed

Macular Arteritis: A Report of Two Pediatric Cases.

We report two pediatric cases of macular arteritis presenting as asymptomatic retiform pigmented macules on the legs. Biopsy showed deep dermal-subcutaneous lymphocytic arteritis with fibrin deposition and luminal narrowing, with a negative infectious and autoimmune workup. Both patients remained well with stable lesions at 1 and 7 years of follow-up. These cases add to the limited pediatric literature and support macular arteritis as an infrequent benign cutaneous arteritis, helping avoid unnecessary investigations and aggressive treatment.

Rare Case of Necrotizing Fasciitis With Polyarteritis Nodosa in a Multi-Comorbid Patient.

Necrotizing fasciitis can mimic cellulitis in immunocompromised patients, delaying diagnosis. This case highlights the importance of early clinical suspicion despite low LRINEC score. Prompt surgical intervention, appropriate antibiotics, and recognition of underlying conditions like polyarteritis nodosa are critical to reduce morbidity and mortality in rapidly progressive soft tissue infections.

Current and future advances in practice: polyarteritis nodosa and related vasculitides.

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a rare vasculitis affecting predominately medium-sized vessels. Our evolving understanding of PAN, including the role of HBV and discovery of monogenic variants such as deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2 (DADA2), has resulted in idiopathic PAN becoming a very rare condition with an annual incidence of 0.6-19.9/million. The investigative approach is to assess organ involvement and confirm the diagnosis either by imaging or biopsy. Conventional catheter angiography is being replaced by CT or MR angiography, which provide increasingly good resolution of the typical

Rare vasculitis types and obstetric and neonatal outcomes - A population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Vasculitis is an infrequent pathology among reproductive-aged women. While data exists regarding pregnancy outcomes in the more common vasculitis subtypes, data is limited regarding these outcomes in rare vasculitis subtypes. We aimed to compare pregnancy and perinatal outcomes between women who suffered from rare types of vasculitis and those who did not. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study using the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project- Nationwide Inpatient Sample (HCUP-NIS). All pregnant women who delivered or had a maternal death in the US (2004-2014) with an ICD-

Carmofur inhibits ovarian cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion via disrupting the YAP-1/TEAD pathway: in vitro and in silico approaches.

The current study aims to present a novel approach to alleviate the aggressiveness of ovarian cancer by pharmacological disruption of the Yes-Associated Protein (YAP) - 1/Transcriptional Enhancer Factor domain (TEAD) heterodimer structure using Carmofur. The Ovcar-3 cell line was incubated with progressively diluted Carmofur solutions. Proliferation inhibition was assessed using the MTT assay. Flow cytometry was employed to determine the pro-apoptotic properties. Cellular morphological alterations were assessed with confocal microscopy. The migration inhibition status was assessed via the scra

Association between frailty and outcomes in emergency department patients requiring emergency general surgery: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Frailty, a state of increased vulnerability, is a well-established risk factor of adverse outcomes following surgery. While its prognostic value has been demonstrated in various contexts, data are lacking on its impact in emergency general surgery within the Swiss healthcare system. This study aimed to evaluate the association between frailty and outcomes among older patients undergoing emergency general surgery in a Swiss tertiary hospital. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study including patients aged 65 years or over who underwent emergency general surgery between J

Asymmetrical muscular disorder with normal creatine kinase (CK) and electromyography (EMG): the challenging diagnosis of muscular polyarteritis nodosa (MPAN), case report and literature review.

We report a case of muscular polyarteritis nodosa in a 23-year-old man with no past medical history presenting with diffuse myalgias, weight loss, fatigue, hypertension, and elevated C-reactive protein. Normal creatine kinase and electromyography contributed to a delayed diagnosis. MRI-guided muscular biopsy confirmed necrotizing vasculitis. Corticosteroid therapy led to rapid improvement.

Bilateral spontaneous kidney rupture in a patient with polyarteritis nodosa disguising as granulomatosis with polyangiitis.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death, with an estimated 19.3 million new cases and 10 million deaths worldwide in 2020 alone. Approximately 2.2 million cancer cases are attributed to infectious diseases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Despite the apparent involvement of some parasitic helminths (especially trematodes) in cancer induction, there are also records of the potential suppressive effects of helminth infections on cancer. Tapeworms such as Echinococcus granulosus, Taenia crassiceps, and more seem to have the potential to suppress malignant cell development,

Gut mayhem at sea: Acute mesenteric ischaemia in a sailor unmasking polyarteritis nodosa.

Acute mesenteric ischaemia is a life-threatening cause of abdominal pain caused by sudden intestinal hypoperfusion. While most cases are related to cardio-embolic events or thrombosis of a pre-existing atherosclerosed vessel in patients with significant cardiovascular risk factors, rarely, it may be the initial manifestation unmasking an underlying systemic vasculitis. We describe a case of polyarteritis nodosa causing mesenteric ischaemia, based on the presence of an inflammatory state and characteristic radiological findings of medium-vessel vasculitis. After treatment with high-dose intrave

Successful treatment of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in polyarteritis nodosa with immunosuppressive therapy: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of cerebral aneurysms in polyarteritis nodosa (PN) is low, and reports of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in patients with PN are even rarer. The necessity of head imaging may be underestimated, particularly when the patient is in remission. OBSERVATIONS: A 20-year-old female with PN, who had been in remission following anti-interleukin-6 receptor antibody therapy, developed SAH and was admitted to the authors' department. Cerebral angiography revealed multiple beaded changes in both carotid and vertebral arterial systems, along with several small aneurysms. These find

Systemic polyarteritis nodosa diagnosed in adulthood after childhood-onset recurrent inflammatory disease with atypical Still-like features.

We report a rare long-term case in which systemic polyarteritis nodosa was ultimately diagnosed in adulthood after childhood-onset recurrent inflammatory disease with atypical Still-like features. A Japanese man had recurrent febrile episodes from infancy and was diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis at 9 years of age. In early adulthood, he developed recurrent fever, rash, polyarthralgia, splenomegaly, neutrophilia, and elevated inflammatory markers, and was considered to have Still-spectrum disease. However, ferritin elevation remained modest despite marked systemic inflammation, sugg

Pelvic Stability During Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Comparison of Traction and Standard Surgical Tables Using Augmented Reality Navigation.

Intestinal parasites are known to cause changes in blood count parameters and immunological markers among various populations. Prison inmates often have poor living conditions and limited access to healthcare, thus infections with intestinal parasites could negatively impact on their overall health and wellbeing. This study assessed the effects of intestinal parasitic infections on the haemato-immunological profile of prison inmates in Southern Ghana. A cross-sectional study using stratified sampling technique was conducted among 347 male prison inmates in three major prisons in Southern Ghana

Hypertensive crisis due to secondary aldosteronism from polyarteritis nodosa.

Primary aldosteronism is common in those diagnosed with hypertension and distinguishing primary aldosteronism from its mimics allows tailored management. A woman in her 30s presented to an Australian hospital with hypertensive crisis (209/100 mm Hg) and spontaneous hypokalaemia (2.9 mmol/L). Laboratory tests revealed hyperreninaemic hyperaldosteronism with a normal aldosterone-renin ratio. CT imaging showed focal areas of soft tissue encasement and enhancement surrounding multiple arteries, including the left renal artery, raising suspicion of a medium-vessel vasculitis. Further investigation

Polyarteritis nodosa associated with VEXAS syndrome and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a rare necrotizing vasculitis occurring alone or associated with other conditions, including VEXAS (vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic) syndrome and chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML). We aimed to compare the presentation and outcomes of VEXAS- or CMML-associated PAN (VEXAS-PAN and CMML-PAN) with those of primary PAN. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, multicentre study of patients diagnosed with primary PAN, VEXAS-PAN or CMML-PAN. Each VEXAS-PAN or CMML-PAN case was matched to three primary PAN cases by age and gender.

IgA Vasculitis with necrotizing arteritis: a multicenter retrospective study from the French Vasculitis Study Group and systematic review of the literature.

IgA vasculitis (IgAV) primarily affects small vessels, but rare cases with necrotizing arteritis (NA) raise questions about overlap with polyarteritis nodosa (PAN). To characterize IgAV with necrotizing arteritis (IgAV-NA) and compare its phenotype with classical IgAV and PAN. We performed a multicenter retrospective study combined with a systematic literature review (1990-2025). Patients fulfilled EULAR/PRINTO/PRES IgAV criteria, had pathological or imaging evidence of NA in small or medium arteries, and were ANCA-negative. Thirty patients were included (7 from databases, 23 from the literatu
