OBJECTIVES: the aim of the present monograph is to update the estimation of the number of people living with cancer in Italy, to describe geographic variability, and estimate the number of long-term survivors, i.e., people living five years or more after a cancer diagnosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: the study included the data of the AIRTUMdatabase. Twenty-four Cancer Registries (CRs) (covering 27% of the Italian population) collected information on the incidence and vital status of 1,275,353 cases diagnosed between 1978 and 2005. For each CR, the observed prevalence was calculated up to the max

AIM: Tirzepatide, a dual agonist of the glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1R) receptors, has demonstrated efficacy in glycemic control and weight loss in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Its role as adjunctive therapy in individuals with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), particularly those who are overweight or obese, remains underexplored. This review aims to evaluate the efficacy of tirzepatide as an adjunct to insulin therapy in adults with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and overweight or obesity, focusing on changes in glycemic co

Patients with granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), formerly known as Wegener's granulomatosis, sometimes exhibit no clinical features. Here, we describe a case of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-negative GPA presenting with only lung granuloma. A 55-year-old woman with a right upper lung mass underwent lobectomy for suspected lung cancer; however, only granuloma was detected, and the etiology was not identified. Serum ANCA results were negative. Four years postoperatively, another pulmonary nodule appeared in the left lung's apex. The kidneys and sinuses were not impaired, but re

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), or Wegener's granulomatosis as it was formerly referred to, is an antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV). GPA is characterized as a necrotizing vasculitis with few or no immune deposits termed pauci-immune deposits, predominantly affecting small and medium arterial vessels, involving the upper and lower respiratory tract as well as glomeruli. Renal manifestations are of critical importance because of the progression that may ensue following onset. Glomerulonephritis (primarily rapidly progressive crescentic glomerulonephri

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), previously known as Wegener's granulomatosis, is a necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis of the small and medium vessels involving the upper respiratory tract, lungs, and kidneys. In this case report, we will describe the case of a 60-year-old man who presented to our observation with recurrent episodes of hemoptoe, fever, and mucopurulent sputum. The diagnosis was made by radiological and laboratory tests.

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a condition with immune-mediated pathogenesis that can present oral manifestations. This report describes the case of a patient diagnosed with WG 14 years previously, who was affected by persistent pain of non-odontogenic origin after successful endodontic treatment. A 39-year-old woman with WG was diagnosed with pulp necrosis and apical periodontitis of teeth #31, #32, and #41, after evaluation through a clinical examination and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). At the first appointment, these teeth were subjected to conventional endodontic treatment. At 6

Bullous dermatoses is a heterogeneous group of blistering skin disorders that can either be inherited or acquired. Subepidermal blisters may result in ulceration and scarring following their rupture. Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a granulomatous necrotizing vasculitis affecting small- to medium-sized blood vessels. It is associated with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) and can be manifested cutaneously as multiple bullous and ulcers. A case of WG was reported in an 18-year-old man presented with multiple skin bullous and ulcers. The patient was diagnosed with WG based on the fi

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), previously called Wegener's granulomatosis, is a systemic necrotizing vasculitis affecting small and medium-sized vessels and is associated with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA). GPA is a systemic disease but can present in a limited form, where the respiratory system is the most commonly involved. Here, we report a case of a 54-year-old African American female who presented with chronic cough and got diagnosed with recurrent right-sided empyema without pneumonia. She underwent a right thoracotomy, and the biopsy showed necrotizing granulomat

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a form of systemic vasculitis characterized by granulomatous inflammation of the upper and lower airways, vasculitis, and necrotizing glomerulonephritis. It is strongly associated with anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies against proteinase 3 (PR3-ANCAs). Various in vitro observations provided strong evidence that autoimmune PR3-ANCAs are directly involved in glomerular and vascular inflammation. However, little is known about the pathogenic significance of PR3-ANCAs in vivo. Therefore, the generation of animal models helped to validate the suggested autoimmu

Antineutrophil cytoplasm antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides (AAV) are small-vessel vasculitides that include granulomatosis with polyangiitis (formerly Wegener's granulomatosis), microscopic polyangiitis, and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Churg - Strauss syndrome). Renal-limited AAV can be considered a fourth entity. Despite their rarity and still unknown cause(s), research into AAV has been very active over the past decades and has allowed for the development of new therapeutic regimens. The pathogenesis is a complex process of immune dysregulations with genetic and envi

Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) associated vasculitis (AAV) compromise a rare group of necrotizing small to medium vessel vasculitides that constitute three distinct disorders: granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) (formerly known as Wegener's granulomatosis), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) (formerly known as Churg-Strauss syndrome). AAV is characterized by the usual presence of circulating autoantibodies to the neutrophil proteins leukocyte proteinase 3 (PR3-ANCA) or myeloperoxidase (MPO-ANCA). These antibodies can activat

OBJECTIVES: To systematically review the psychometric properties of outcome measurement instruments used in ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV).
METHODS: Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane, Scopus and Web of Science were searched from inception to 14 July 2020 for validation studies of instruments used in AAV. Following the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) and OMERACT frameworks, different psychometric properties (validity, reliability, responsiveness and feasibility) were summarized. Risk of bias was assessed according to the COSMIN checklist.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Granulomatosis with polyangiitis is a rare vasculitis. The gastrointestinal symptoms and complications of the disease are rare in GPA patients. One the rarest is intestinal obstruction which when found was always caused by bowel perforation.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report the case of a 14 years-old female patient who is a known case of granulomatosis with polyangiitis presented with intestinal obstruction without perforation and treated conservatively.
DISCUSSION: Gastrointestinal involvement is seen in only 5-10 % of the cases and is a poor prognostic factor.
