Manganese-crosslinked porous carbon for phosphorus recovery and soil remediation: A sustainable strategy featuring fast adsorption and controlled release.

Developing efficient systems to recover phosphorus (P) from water is critical for mitigating aquatic eutrophication and advancing sustainable P cycling. Herein, a porous carbon skeleton was synthesized via pyrolysis of manganese-crosslinked sodium alginate (Mn/SA-C-S) for efficient P adsorption and subsequent soil remediation. Mn/SA-C-S exhibited rapid P adsorption (14.61 mg/g within 200 min) and controlled release (∼10% desorption over 500 min) via precipitation and surface complexation. The P-rich Mn/SA-C-S (Mn/SA-C-S-P) sustains soil available P (∼109 mg/kg), enhances plant P uptake, and re

Data processing tools comparison applied to clinical datasets for untargeted GC-MS-based metabolomics.

BACKGROUND: In metabolomics studies, biological data are highly complex, requiring robust computational tools to detect biological variation in the organism under investigation. Despite this, comparative studies of data processing software for GC-MS data are scarce. This work evaluated the performance of two open-source software programs, XCMS and MS-DIAL, on three datasets: cells, serum, and tissue, acquired by GC-MS. RESULTS: Software performance was assessed based on the quality of the raw data matrix, the number of extracted features, the presence of missing values, and the number of anno

Oxytocin signaling bidirectionally modulates serotonergic and dopaminergic neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus.

The involvement of oxytocin in social behavior is well established, yet its interaction with neuromodulatory systems, such as serotonin and dopamine, remains incompletely understood. Here, we utilized immunohistochemistry, anatomical tracing, chemogenetic, and ex vivo electrophysiological approaches primarily in male mice, with female mice used only for an additional anatomical tracing control experiment, investigate how oxytocin modulates serotonergic and dopaminergic neuronal populations. Employing the dual-eGRASP tool, we visualized oxytocinergic projections from the paraventricular nucleus

The Importance of Translational Research for Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Translational research is the process of transforming fundamental biological discoveries into safe and efficacious interventions for patients. This specialized field is of particular importance for neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), a broad class of behaviorally defined conditions including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs), and related disorders. NDDs present unique translational challenges including (i) a lack of biological diagnostic markers; (ii) the fact that they are diagnosed exclusively

Research engagement and visibility in a specialized pediatric rehabilitation profession: A bibliometric review of Italian neuro and psychomotor therapists of developmental age, 1993-2025.

INTRODUCTION: In Italy, the neuro and psychomotor therapist of developmental age (Terapista della Neuro e Psicomotricità dell'Età Evolutiva [TNPEE]) is a specialized healthcare rehabilitation professional focusing on neurological and developmental disorders in children from birth through age 18. As this profession exists exclusively in Italy and has no direct international counterpart, its scientific contribution is difficult to identify using conventional bibliographic searches. This bibliometric analysis aimed to map the identifiable TNPEE-authored scientific literature, describe publication

Evolutionary chemical learning in dimerization networks.

We present a framework for chemical learning based on competitive dimerization networks (CDNs)-systems in which multiple molecular species, e.g., proteins or DNA-RNA oligomers, reversibly bind to form dimers. We show numerically that these networks can, in principle, be trained in vitro through directed evolution, enabling the implementation of complex learning tasks such as multiclass classification without digital hardware or prior knowledge of all microscopic association constants. Each molecular species functions analogously to a neuron, with binding affinities acting as tunable synaptic w

Better together: Cross and joint covariances enhance signal detectability in undersampled data.

Many data-science applications involve detecting a shared signal between two high-dimensional variables. Using random matrix theory methods, we determine when such a signal can be detected and reconstructed from sample correlations, despite the background of sampling-noise-induced correlations. We consider three different covariance matrices constructed from two high-dimensional variables: their individual self-covariance, their unwhitened cross-covariance as used in partial least squares (PLS), and the self-covariance of the concatenated (joint) variable, which incorporates the self- and the

Articulation points in multiplex networks.

Many real systems can be efficiently represented by complex networks. Recently, the robustness of these networks under random or targeted attacks has been of interest. One of the strategies to dismantle a network involves identifying and removing articulation points. These are nodes that are critical to the network's connectivity; their removal causes the network to break into separate components. Most real-world networks are not isolated, but interacting, and can be viewed as multiplex networks. Inherent cascading failure within multiplex structures makes the definition of articulation points

Efficacy and safety of nafamostat mesilate for anticoagulation during ECMO/CRRT: insight from the integrated meta-analysis and FAERS pharmacovigilance study.

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) require a balance between maintaining circuit patency and minimizing bleeding risk. Nafamostat mesilate (NM) is a short-acting anticoagulant with distinctive pharmacokinetic properties, including rapid metabolism and a short half-life, which may reduce prolonged systemic anticoagulant exposure. These characteristics make NM a potential alternative to conventional anticoagulation strategies, particularly for patients at high risk of bleeding. This study aimed to systematically evaluate the eff

Metastable state regulation and lattice modulation in layered cathodes for aluminum batteries.

Aluminum batteries (ABs) are considered promising candidates for large-scale energy storage owing to their high volumetric capacity, abundant resources, and intrinsic safety. However, layered cathode materials generally suffer from diffusion hysteresis and structural instability induced by the strong electrostatic interaction of Al3+, which severely hinders the development of high-energy-density systems. This review breaks through conventional single-mode optimization strategies and innovatively establishes a synergistic design framework integrating lattice engineering with metastability regul

Tuning High-Voltage Cu-Fe Redox in P2-Type Layered Metal Oxide Cathodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries.

P2-type layered oxides have gained significant attention in energy storage applications due to their superior rate capability and cycling performance. However, P2-type layered oxides suffer from low sodium content and irreversible phase transitions at high voltages, limiting reversible capacity and long-term durability. Although Cu-Mn-based systems offer a high operating voltage through the Cu2+/Cu3+ redox couple, the accessible voltage window remains narrow, resulting in restricted capacity. In this work, we employ a compositional engineering strategy by introducing Fe into the Cu-Mn framewor

Andiroba Oil (Carapa guianensis Aublet) Gel-Based Nanoemulsion: Development, Characterization, and In Vitro Evaluation in Wound Healing-Related Cells.

Andiroba oil (Carapa guianensis Aublet) is widely used in traditional medicine due to its anti-inflammatory and reported wound-healing properties. In this study, we developed and characterized andiroba oil-based nanoemulsions (NeAnd) and gel-based nanostructured formulation (NeAndG) to investigate their physicochemical stability and initial in vitro biological effects in wound healing-related cells. Chemical characterization by GC-MS confirmed the presence of limonoids (including gedunin and its derivatives), β-sitosterol, and oleic acid in andiroba oil composition, compounds associated with a

Design and Properties of Iono-Eutectogels as Sustainable Catalytic Media for the Aldol Reaction.

To design sustainable catalytic reaction media, we tested the gelling ability of glucono-based ammonium ionic liquids toward deep eutectic solvents, obtaining a new class of materials called "iono-eutectogels". Gelators differed in spacer length and side chain tethered to the cation and were chosen for their previously assessed low cyto- and ecotoxicity. Deep eutectic solvents were composed by cholinium chloride and various hydrogen-bond donors. Supramolecular gels, obtained in cholinium chloride/urea, were characterized, measuring their gel-sol transition temperatures and critical gelation co

Dominance switching between substrate adhesion and curvature in directional collective cell migration.

Substrate curvature and cell-substrate adhesion are two key physical determinants of directional collective cell migration, yet their joint regulatory mechanism remains unresolved. Here, we establish a physical framework based on the instantaneous force balance to reveal the dominance switching mechanism between these two factors in collective cell migration. Higher curvature sets a threshold that gates migration initiation by redistributing forces, while adhesion primarily governs curvature-independent migration velocity after cells surpass the threshold by mediating the balance between drivi

AI safety is a system property, not a sum of individual defenses.

Safety for large language models (LLMs) and artificial intelligence (AI) agents remains fragmented; defenses against jailbreaking coexist with unresolved hallucination, fairness, and autonomous-control problems. Existing frameworks address these risks, but few specify how failure in one dimension changes another within a deployment. We argue that distinct safety failures can interact and amplify each other. We identify four safety challenge classes, analyze their interactions, and ground the argument in real-world incidents involving compound failures. We then audit GPT-5 and Claude-Sonnet-4.6

Birdlike Takeoff Strategies Enabled by Flapping-Pitch Effect in a Meter-Scale Flapping-Wing Robot.

The takeoff strategy in birds involves a fundamental trade-off between acceleration and climb, yet its physical consequences are difficult to isolate in biological experiments. Here, we develop a meter-scale flapping-wing robot for controlled investigation of takeoff strategies. We show that a flapping-pitch effect, arising from flapping kinematics and aeroelastic interactions, enables pitch modulation at low speeds where conventional control surfaces have limited authority. In parallel, we establish a lattice-Boltzmann-method (LBM)-based 2-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) framework for t

Region-specific human cardiac extracellular vesicles differentially regulate mitochondrial function.

Aim: The human heart contains two major mitochondrial subtypes, subsarcolemmal (SSL), fueling surface ion channels, and interfibrillar (IF), fueling interior contractile machinery. This study investigated whether the distinct extracellular vesicles (EVs) that we determined to be associated with these regions could influence cardiac energetics. Methods: Following mitochondrial extraction, Subsarcolemmal Heart Extracellular Vesicles (SHEVs) and Interfibrillar Heart Extracellular Vesicles (IHEVs) were extracted from nonfailing human left ventricular lysates using precipitation-based methods. We c

Optimized enrichment of circulating extracellular vesicles from whole blood samples using PROSPR.

Aim: Whole blood constitutes a robust and readily available resource for the identification and characterization of systemically circulating substances. Despite the relevant number of blood specimens archived in biobanks globally, their utilization in extracellular vesicle (EV) research remains considerably underexploited. In this study, we present an optimized PRotein Organic Solvent PRecipitation (PROSPR) workflow, specifically designed for the rapid and standardized enrichment of EVs directly from untreated blood samples. Methods: PROSPR workflow was applied for EV enrichment directly from
