The central nervous system (CNS) is frequently affected by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Other causes, especially infection, may also originate CNS disease in SLE patients. Spontaneous autologous rosette-forming cells (ARFC), which form rosettes with autologous erythrocytes, have been of interest as a subset of thymus-derived lymphocytes (T cells). Specific and nonspecific panniculitis occur in connective tissue diseases. Microscopic studies of the epidermis and dermis, immunofluorescent microscopy, and extensive serologic testing may aid in the diagnosis and classification of these unusual syndromes. Connective tissue panniculitis and focal lipoatrophy may be forms of immunoreactive panniculitis or connective tissue disease (or both) in which typical microscopic, serologic, or other events related to classic connective tissue disease have not occurred.

IgG was purified from 91 serum samples obtained from patients with systemic rheumatic diseases and examined for the presence of antinuclear antibodies reactive with small ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes. Antibody specificity was determined by autoradiographic detection of 32P labeled RNA which had been separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Five fragments from hexapeptide to decapeptide, corresponding to positions 16-25 of thymosin beta 9, were synthesized and their effects on low E-rosette-forming capacity with sheep erythrocytes of cells from lupus nephritis patients were compared with that of the undecapeptide (positions 16-26) of thymosin beta 9 by taking synthetic thymosin beta 9 as a standard. Two of the fragments (16-25 and 18-25) exhibited higher activity than that of the parent peptide (16-26). The other three sequences (17-25, 19-25, and 20-25) had no effect at concentrations as high as 10(-4) M.

The renal biopsies of 100 patients presenting with the Nephrotic Syndrome were analysed. Eighty-seven percent were due to primary glomerulonephritis and the other 13% due to secondary glomerulonephritis of which Systemic Lupus Erythematosus was the commonest. We have studied the infective complications in a group of 75 patients with immunologically-mediated disease who required high dose immunosuppression. There were 22 patients with anti-glomerular basement membrane antibody disease, 19 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, 18 with wegener's granulomatosis and 16 patients with other forms of systemic vasculitis. The infection rate was 3.69 infections/patient, or 0.74 infections/patient/week of immunosuppression.
