Since Kahn et al. reported in 1976 insulin resistant diabetes due to anti-insulin receptor antibodies, an unusual form of diabetes mellitus (type B) has been found in many countries. We had two diabetic patients with anti-insulin receptor antibodies, associated with either acanthosis nigricans or systemic lupus erythematosus. The results of investigations for antinuclear antibodies in scleroderma and other connective diseases are reported. An indirect fluorescence method on Hep-2 cell smears was used. Antibodies directed against chromosomal centromeres were detected in 25 cases: 19 sera of patients with diffuse scleroderma, 2 cases of Raynaud's disease, 2 cases of rheumatoid arthritis and 1 case each of lupus and dermatomyositis. A significant correlation was found between the presence of anticentromere antibodies and benign forms of scleroderma, notably the CREST syndrome.

The cutaneous lesions of seven consecutive patients with cutaneous lupus erythematosus (LE), two patients with systemic LE, and a patient with both dermatomyositis and cutaneous LE, were studied bacteriologically and microscopically for the presence of bacteria. The study was prompted by the previous reports of variably acid-fast and non-acid-fast bacteria in other collagen diseases, and also by recent reports confirming the presence of cell wall deficient (CWD) bacteria (staphylococci, streptococci, and corynebacteria) within the hematologic elements of both "normal" and diseased individuals.

Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were previously reported to have a high prevalence of circulating DNA in association with systemic vasculitis. The present study was designed to determine whether circulating DNA also characterizes forms of systemic arterial inflammation other than those associated with SLE. A case of acute chorea in a young woman with disseminated lupus erythematosus is described and 27 similar cases reported in the literature are reviewed. We have recently described that human autologous rosette-forming (Tar) cells have the characteristics of postthymic precursor cells. Experiments were designed to determine the basis for the strong competitive reaction of denatured DNA with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) antinative DNA antibodies. In 22 (13 females, 9 males) of 224 patients presenting with nephrotic syndrome, onset occurred during the second decade of life. Lipoid nephrosis and its variants (nil, focal segmental, or focal global glomerulosclerosis and mesangial proliferative) accounted for the disease in the majority of patients (13 patients).
