Investigation of the Relationships Between IL-12B and IL-23 Receptor Polymorphisms with Behçet's Disease in a Turkish Population.

Behçet's disease is a chronic, multisystem inflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent mucocutaneous and ocular manifestations, in which genetic factors, particularly cytokine gene polymorphisms, are thought to contribute to disease susceptibility. This study aimed to investigate the association of Interleukin-12B and Interleukin-23R gene polymorphisms and haplotype distributions with Behçet's disease in Denizli, a province of Turkey. A total of 88 patients with Behçet's disease and 133 healthy controls were genotyped for Interleukin-12B (rs3213119, rs3213120, rs3212227, rs3213113, rs2082

Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index as a Marker of Activity in Behcet's Uveitis.

BACKGROUND: Behcet's disease (BD) is an immune-mediated disease with ocular involvement in ~70% cases. Clinical assessment of uveitis activity can be challenging in special situations. The Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index (SII), a novel biomarker, may aid assessment but remains unstudied in BD uveitis. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the levels of SII and other potential inflammatory biomarkers derived from full blood count (FBC) in patients with active uveitis in BD. METHODS: This is a case-control study that included 3 groups; an active uveitis group with a confirmed diagnosis of BD, an inactive

A rare case of midaortic syndrome: Vascular Behçet's disease or Takayasu arteritis?

This case report describes a 44-year-old man with midaortic syndrome and resistant hypertension, presenting a diagnostic challenge due to overlapping features of Behçet's disease and Takayasu arteritis. Imaging studies revealed severe aortic stenosis accompanied by aortic wall thickening, findings typically associated with Takayasu arteritis; however, the patient's clinical history and a positive pathergy test supported a diagnosis of Behçet's disease. Immunosuppressive therapy led to symptomatic improvement, and surgical management with thoracic endovascular aortic repair was successfully per

The TyG Index as a surrogate marker of insulin resistance in Behçet's disease: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease is a chronic systemic vasculitis characterized by persistent inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, both of which contribute to metabolic disturbances such as insulin resistance. Insulin resistance and the resulting microvascular impairment may exacerbate tissue injury underlying key dermatologic and ocular manifestations of the disease. The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index has recently emerged as a practical biomarker of insulin resistance, yet its role in Behçet's disease has not been studied extensively. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ability of the TyG index to

Vascular Behçet's Disease: A Case of Arterial Occlusion and Successful Medical Management.

Behçet's disease is a rare, chronic, multisystem vasculitis that can involve arteries and veins of all sizes, with vascular manifestations representing some of its most severe and potentially life-threatening complications. Arterial involvement is uncommon but clinically significant, particularly in young patients. We report the case of a 26-year-old Palestinian male with a history of recurrent oral and genital ulcerations who presented with persistent left inguinal and proximal thigh pain accompanied by localized inflammatory signs. Laboratory investigations revealed elevated inflammatory mar

Epidemiology and clinical features of Behçet's disease in the Middle East and North Africa:A systematic review and meta-analysis.

This study assessed the prevalence and clinical characteristics of Behçet's disease (BD) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, providing updated pooled estimates and identifying gaps in current epidemiological knowledge. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies reporting the prevalence, epidemiology, or clinical features of BD in the MENA region, published in PubMed, MEDLINE, and Web of Science databases from 2014 onward. The eligible studies had observational designs and diagnoses based on internationally validated criteria. The study quality was assessed usi

Multimodality imaging of pulmonary artery spindle cell sarcoma in Behçet's disease with cardiac valve involvement.

Cardiac valve disease secondary to Behçet's disease complicated by pulmonary artery spindle cell sarcoma is extremely rare. We report a 59-year-old man with recurrent oral ulcers who presented with fever and chest pain. Laboratory findings and a positive pathergy test supported the diagnosis of Behçet's disease. Echocardiography showed severe tricuspid regurgitation and a pulmonary artery mass, which was corroborated by CT and cardiac MRI. PET/CT demonstrated hypermetabolic activity, and histopathology confirmed spindle cell sarcoma. This case underscores the pivotal role of multimodality imag

Retinal thickness and microvascular alterations in the diagnosis of behcet's disease: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: In the current study optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) was used to compare retinal thickness (RT) and superficial vascular density (SVD) in patients with Behcet’s disease (BD) and healthy controls. METHODS: The study included 17 BD patients (34 eyes) and 17 healthy participants (34 eyes). Each eye had an en-face OCTA scan. Macular RT and SVD were assessed in both groups after segmenting each image into 9 subregions. RESULTS: BD patients and controls had significantly different visual acuity (p < 0.001). Compared to the control group, BD patients had increased inner RT

Phenotype-associated microvascular differences in pediatric Behçet's disease revealed by nailfold videocapillaroscopy.

UNLABELLED: Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic multisystem vasculitis that may begin in childhood. Microvascular dysfunction is central to its pathogenesis, yet pediatric data are scarce. This study evaluated nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) findings in children with BD using standardized methodology and compared microvascular parameters between complete and incomplete disease phenotypes, as well as with age-matched healthy reference data. In this cross-sectional study, pediatric BD patients fulfilling the pediatric Behçet's disease (PEDBD) criteria underwent NVC following the European Allia

Follicular helper-like γδ T cells promote plasma cell differentiation in Behçet's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic vasculitis characterized by recurrent oral and genital ulcers. The disease can manifest diverse phenotypes -such as mucocutaneous, ocular BD- with an uncertain role for autoantibodies in disease pathogenesis. Altered γδT-cell and B-cell phenotypes have been widely reported in BD, but it remains unknown whether these lineages can interact to promote autoantibody production. METHODS: This study included 75 patients with a BD diagnosis, alongside 41 healthy control (HC) volunteers. We performed ex vivo flow-cytometric profiling of blood γδT and B c

Inflammatory Indices as Markers of Vascular and Organ Involvement in Behçet's Disease.

Background: Behçet's disease is a multisystem inflammatory disorder with a variable clinical course. This study evaluated the association between inflammatory indices, clinical involvement, and mortality. Methods: This retrospective study included 444 patients with BD. Clinical characteristics and laboratory data were systematically retrieved from electronic medical record system. Inflammatory indices (NLR, PLR, SII) were calculated to reflect systemic inflammation. In addition, CRP-based composite indices (IBI-NLR and IBI-SII) were derived to integrate cellular and acute-phase inflammatory re
