BACKGROUND: There is frequent overlap between and the connective tissue diseases Joint Hypermobility Syndrome/Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (JHS/EDS) and disorders of the gut-brain interaction (DGBIs).
AIMS: Because not all JHS/EDS patients develop DGBIs, we sought to determine whether secondary environmental triggers may lead to development of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD) in patients with JHS/EDS.
METHODS: We sent electronic surveys to 253 patients from a JHS/EDS support group, with responses collected over one year. IBS and FD were diagnosed by the Rome IV criteria

IgM deficiency is characterized by remarkably low serum levels of IgM with normal IgG and IgA levels. These patients clinically present with recurrent infections, autoimmune disorders, and malignancies. While unknown, the proposed mechanisms explain the pathophysiology as an issue due to impaired IgG antibody response. The connexin genes encode for gap junctional proteins where mutations can cause hearing deficits and immune dysregulation. We present a unique case of an 18-year-old patient with recurrent sinusitis, diagnosed connexin-26 mutation and an IgM deficiency. An 18-year-old male with

BACKGROUND: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a rare genetic connective tissue condition that is poorly understood in relation to lactation. As diagnostic methods improve, prevalence has increased. EDS, a disorder that impacts connective tissue, is characterized by skin extensibility, joint hypermobility, and fragile tissue which can affect every organ and body system leading to complications during pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period. Traits of this disease can cause mild to severe physiologic and functional obstacles during lactation. Unfortunately, there is little clinical evidence

[Purpose] This study investigated the association between generalized joint laxity and knee joint movement in female university students. [Participants and Methods] The study included 21 female university students. Generalized joint laxity was measured using the Beighton criteria for joint hypermobility. Acceleration and angular velocities of the tibia during knee extension were measured along three axes using a triaxial accelerometer. Sampling data were expressed as root mean squares. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to determine differences in the acceleration and angular velocities along ea

Camptodactyly is a genetic disorder that causes fixed flexion deformity of one or more fingers of single or both hands. It is very rare and the occurrence is very low amongst the children. It is linked to a handful of congenital connective tissue syndromes. It is passed onto generations with reduced expressivity. However, its association with benign joint hypermobility syndrome is rarely known. Joint hypermobility syndrome is a condition where there is extreme joint flexibility and it is related to a set of articular and extra-articular sequelae. We herein report a case of camptodactyly with b

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and functional neurological disorders (FNDs) share some clinical characteristics such as alexithymia, sensory sensitivity and interoceptive issues. Recent evidence shows that both the disorders present symptoms compatible with a diagnosis of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and hypermobile spectrum disorders (hEDS/HSD), a heterogeneous group of heritable connective tissue disorders characterized by joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, and tissue fragility. Here we compared the prevalence of hEDS/HSD-related symptoms in a group of patients with FNDs,

BACKGROUND: The phenotypic diversity of functional movement disorders (FMD) is considered a reflection of its many etiological subtypes. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), a joint hypermobility syndrome, also has variable phenotypes, which may include functional symptoms.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of combined diagnoses of FMD and EDS.
METHODS: We searched our Electronic Medical Records for patients carrying diagnostic codes for EDS and FMD. Further data extraction was done through chart review.
RESULTS: Of 11,621 patients evaluated from January 1, 2016 to May 1, 2022, 16 carried a

BACKGROUND: Rapid advances in mobile apps for clinical data collection for pain evaluation have resulted in more efficient data handling and analysis than traditional paper-based approaches. As paper-based visual analogue scale (p-VAS) scores are commonly used to assess pain levels, new emerging apps need to be validated prior to clinical application with symptomatic children and adolescents.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of an electronic visual analogue scale (e-VAS) method via a mobile health (mHealth) App in children and adolescents diagnosed with hyper

A 13-year-old male patient with intermittent asthma and joint hypermobility presented to the ED in acute hypoxemic respiratory distress. He reported experiencing cough, increased work of breathing, and worsening chest pain for 3 days before presentation. He also reported fatigue and decreased appetite for 2 weeks. He had no known fever, myalgias, or recent weight loss. His medical history included two hospitalizations during early childhood for viral respiratory illnesses, one of which required intubation at 8 months of age. He had a gastrostomy tube placed shortly after his hospitalization be

Joint hypermobility (JH) conditions suggest dysfunction in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) (dysautonomia), associated with multifactor non-articular local musculoskeletal pain, and remains a complex treatment. This study aims to determine the effects of musculoskeletal interfiber counterirritant stimulation (MICS) as an innovative treatment of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) on the upper trapezius muscle in JH patients. We evaluate the ANS activity by wavelet transform spectral analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) in sixty women, equally divided: MTrP, MTrP + general joint hypermobili

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia and myalgic encephalomyelitis / chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) are poorly understood conditions with overlapping symptoms, fuelling debate as to whether they are manifestations of the same spectrum or separate entities. Both are associated with hypermobility, but this remains significantly undiagnosed, despite impact on quality of life.
OBJECTIVE: We planned to understand the relevance of hypermobility to symptoms in fibromyalgia and ME/CFS.
METHOD: Sixty-three patient participants presented with a confirmed diagnosis of fibromyalgia and/or ME/CFS; 24 participants
