BACKGROUND: Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (JHS) is a Heritable Disorder of Connective tissue characterised by joint laxity and chronic widespread arthralgia. People with JHS exhibit a range of other symptoms including balance problems. To explore balance further, the objective of this study is to compare responses to forward perturbations between three groups; people who are hypermobile with (JHS) and without symptoms and people with normal flexibility.
METHODS: Twenty-one participants with JHS, 23 participants with Generalised Joint Hypermobility (GJH) and 22 participants who have normal flex

UNLABELLED: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is defined as the presence of gastroduodenal symptoms in the absence of organic disease that is likely to explain the symptoms. Joint hypermobility (JH) refers to the increased passive or active movement of a joint beyond its normal range and is characteristically present in patients with joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS), which is a hypermobile subtype of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). Recent reports have highlighted the co-existence of FD with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Our aim was to study the prevalence of JHS in FD compared with healthy subjects and to s

BACKGROUND: Generalized joint hypermobility is defined as an excessive range of motion in several joints. Having joint hypermobility is not a pathology, but when associated with pain and other symptoms, it might affect health and function. Evidence for physiotherapy management is sparse and resistance training might be a possible intervention. Thus, the effects of 12-week resistance-training on muscle properties and function in women with generalized joint hypermobility were evaluated.
METHODS: In this single-blind randomized controlled trial women between 20 and 40 years with generalized joi

INTRODUCTION: Hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) and hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) are both characterized by generalized hypermobility, in combination with pain, affected proprioception, and pronounced fatigue. Clinical observation indicates that behavioral problems, hyperactivity, and autistic traits are overrepresented in children with those conditions. The purpose of this retrospective study was to establish the prevalence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among children with HSD and hEDS treated in our clinic since 2012.

The Beighton Score (BS) is a set of manoeuvres in a nine-point scoring system, used as the standard method of assessment for Generalised Joint Hypermobility (GJH). It was originally developed as an epidemiological tool used in screening large populations for GJH, but later adopted as a clinical tool for diagnostic purposes. Its ability to truly reflect GJH remains controversial, as joints within the scoring system are predominantly of the upper limb and disregard many of the major joints, preventing a direct identification of GJH. Furthermore, a consistent finding in the literature whereby the

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Patients with symptomatic hypermobility syndrome such as hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (hEDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) commonly present to rheumatologists with joint pain and functional disability. Providers often have difficulty with diagnosis due to a lack of knowledge on the range of associated manifestations and the available therapeutic modalities. This review will discuss recent updates on diagnostic measures and treatment options for rheumatologists to help patients navigate hEDS/HSD.

BACKGROUND: Joint hypermobility refers to joints that move beyond their normal limits. Individuals with hypermobility of the fingers experience difficulties in activities of daily living. Finger orthoses are available for managing hypermobility of the fingers, but their effectiveness has received little attention in scholarly literature.
OBJECTIVES: To determine if use of custom fit finger orthoses leads to improvements in time needed to perform standardised hand function tests, and attentional demand required to perform these tests, in individuals with joint hypermobility syndrome, Hypermobi

BACKGROUND: Patients with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome/Hypermobility Type (EDS-HT/JHS) and Craneo-Cervical Instability frequently suffer from severe widespread pain which is difficult to control. Chronic neuroinflammation, opioid-induced hyperalgesia, and central sensitization may explain this painful condition. The aim of this study was to determine if opioid-free anesthesia plus the postoperative administration of lidocaine, ketamine and dexmedetomidine can reduce postoperative pain and the need of methadone rescues in comparison with opioid-based management in these patients undergoing Craneo-Cer

BACKGROUND: This review paper outlines recent advances in diagnostic criteria for hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) and its association with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), as well as current literature on the association between joint hypermobility syndrome and lumbar back pain. We outline the optimal multidisciplinary management of lumbar back pain in the context of joint hypermobility syndrome, as well as the indications and possible side effects of surgical management of patients with these conditions.Several studies have suggested a link between chronic low back pain and hypermobility.

Joint hypermobility syndrome refers to increased joint flexibility beyond the normal range of motion. This syndrome has a benign form known as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type 3. This is a disorder in which hypermobility is accompanied by clinical manifestations in the absence of any systemic disease. A clinical finding associated with this condition is postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. The following is a rare case of joint hypermobility syndrome and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. The relevance of this case report lies in the impact that this disease had on the patient's qualit

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Women with hereditary disorders of connective tissue (HDCT) are at increased risk of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). We hypothesized that patients would have increased incidence and severity of perioperative complications up to 6 weeks after surgeries for POP/SUI. Secondary objectives were to compare pre- and post-operative pelvic floor symptoms and anatomical support as well as pelvic floor disorder recurrence.
METHODS: In this multi-center retrospective cohort study, we identified patients with HDCTs by patient history and ICD-

BACKGROUND: Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (JHS) presents with a range of symptoms including widespread joint hypermobility and chronic arthralgia. The study objective was to investigate whether impairments in JHS are due to hypermobility or another factor of JHS by identifying impairments in gait and stair-climbing tasks; an activity that is demanding and so may better show differences between the cohorts.
METHODS: Sixty-eight adults participated; 23 JHS, 23 Generalised Joint Hypermobility (GJH), and 22 Normal Flexibility (NF). Inclusion criteria for JHS participants were a positive classifica

A pair of middle-aged sisters is presented who experienced episodes of spontaneous, relatively atraumatic, acute onset, painful sub-cutaneous bleeding into the digits of their hands over a number of preceding years. A literature search revealed they had Achenbach's syndrome, which is a benign and self-limiting condition that resolves completely within 2-4 days. However, a hitherto unreported association between Achenbach's syndrome and joint hypermobility with its abnormal collagen is made, along with a tentative causality hypothesis that perhaps in the presence of atypical connective tissue,

CASE: A 14-year-old girl with a hypermobility syndrome presented with bilateral snapping semimembranosus (SM) and semitendinosus (ST) tendons. After failure of conservative treatment, she was treated with tenotomy of SM and later tendon transposition of her ST to her gracilis.
CONCLUSIONS: Surgical treatment of snapping hamstring tendons has historically consisted of the release of the tendon insertions (tenotomy) or tendon harvest. This new surgical technique describes an alternative technique for definitive management with tenotomy and tendon transposition where the snapping ST is transpose

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Dysautonomia and hypermobility syndrome are two distinct but often overlapping clinical conditions that are recognized for their complex multiorgan system afflictions. The purpose of this review is to investigate dietary strategies to reduce symptoms and augment quality of life in this growing patient population.
RECENT FINDINGS: There is increasing evidence supporting dietary modifications to include food rich in probiotics and prebiotics, along with fiber supplements to reduce gastrointestinal symptoms. Adequate salt and fluid intake may reduce orthostatic hypotension sym

Iron deficiency anemia is associated with heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) and, by extension, a bleeding disorder (BD). It is unknown if iron deficiency without anemia is associated with a BD in adolescents. Moreover, the threshold of ferritin associated with fatigue in adolescents with HMB is unclear. In this multicenter study, we enrolled adolescents with HMB without BD. Participants underwent BD and anemia work-up in Young Women's Hematology Clinics and completed the Peds QL™ fatigue scale. BDs were defined as von Willebrand Disease, platelet function defect, clotting factor deficiencies, and

The mind is embodied; thoughts and feelings interact with states of physiological arousal and physical integrity of the body. In this context, there is mounting evidence for an association between psychiatric presentations and the expression variant connective tissue, commonly recognised as joint hypermobility. Joint hypermobility is common, frequently under-recognised, significantly impacts quality of life, and can exist in isolation or as the hallmark of hypermobility spectrum disorders (encompassing joint hypermobility syndrome and hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome). Mast cell activation disease (MCAD) includes single organ disease such as asthma, urticaria, and gastroenteritis, as well as multiorgan system involvement such as mast cell activation syndrome and anaphylaxis. Reports link MCAD with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS), hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD), and with primary immune deficiencies such as complement and immunoglobulin deficiencies (Ig Def). This study assesses the concurrence of these syndromes. We undertook a cohort analysis of patients seen in a community-based Allergy/Immunology clinic from 2015 to 2019. We searched for d

BACKGROUND: Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (JHS) is a rare Heritable Disorder of Connective tissue characterised by generalised joint laxity and chronic widespread pain. Joint Hypermobility Syndrome has a large impact on patients' day to day activities, and many complain of symptoms when standing for prolonged periods. This study investigates whether people with JHS exhibit the same behaviours to deal with the effects of prolonged standing as people with equal hypermobility and no pain, and people with normal flexibility and no pain.
