Personal experience confirms the diagnostic value of serum ferritin estimation in the iron deficient microcytic anemia, where there are low levels. The clinical significance of the test is restricted by the not negligible incidence of levels like that of iron overload in the hepatic and neoplastic diseases. In hepatic diseases the test resulted to be related to the changes of serum transaminases. In malignant neoplasms the high serum ferritin levels had been only sometimes associated with transfusional siderosis.

Mortality was studied in 14 111 patients with ankylosing spondylitis given a single course of x-ray treatment during 1935-54. Six cases of Lancefield Group G streptococcocal arthritis are described. Two cases had pre-existing chronic arthritis (one rheumatoid) with infection of a joint prosthesis. Three cases had neoplastic disease before or at the same time as septic arthritis. Skin reactions, including cellulitis and scarlatiniform rash were prominent in five cases. One patient may have acquired a Group G streptococcus from her dog. Five cases responded well to penicillin and the sixth who was allergic to that drug was cured by erythromycin. Nodular transformation, a rare hyperplastic condition of the liver, has been reported in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, Felty's syndrome, the CRST syndrome, and myeloproliferative disorders. Associated disorders in the present clinicopathologic study of 30 cases included the foregoing as well as extrahepatic neoplasms, endocrine disorders, and other diseases producing immune dysfunction; some patients had received drug therapy for a prolonged time. Pigmentous villonodular synovitis (P.V.N.S.) is a rare arthropathy consisting in a hypertrophic-hyperplastic reaction of the synovial membrane in circumscribed or diffused form. Involvement of the bond, found very rarely during the course of this arthropathy, seems to be due to compressive-erosive action of diffusely hyperplastic pathologic tissue and not neoplastic invasion. In this note there is a report on the cases of the "G. Pini" Orthopaedic Institute in Milan: 33 cases of P.V.N.S., of which 5 with bone involvement.

Serum levels of sIgA were quantitated by a new radioimmunoassay in patients with a variety of diseases, lactating women and clinically healthy blood donors. Two cases of lymphadenopathy resulting from a lymph node foreign body reaction to silicone are presented. In each case lymph node biopsy was performed because of the clinical suspicion of neoplastic disease. A 12-week-old pup was examined because of a bizarre periarticular joint condition. Physical, radiographic and histopathologic findings indicated synovial and periarticular calcinosis that involved virtually all of the diarthrodial joints to varying degrees. History, laboratory data, and postmortem findings tended to eliminate a nutritional, neoplastic, or infectious cause, but a genetic, endocrine, or metabolic derangement could not be ruled out.
