Regression-based risk scores using sociodemographic and sexual behaviour data do not predict asymptomatic sexually transmitted infections among HIV PrEP users.

OBJECTIVES: Among users of oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), condom use is low and incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is high, hence guidelines recommend STI screening every 3-6 months. Identifying individuals with higher asymptomatic STI risk for targeted screening may offer an opportunity to reduce the burden of STI screening. METHODS: In the Netherlands, PrEP has been offered through the National PrEP Pilot Program since 2019, which includes screening every 3 months. We included data of all individuals who received care through the PrEP programme between July 2019

Prevalence of chlamydial, gonococcal and syphilis positivity by anatomical site and sex via self-collected biospecimens using at-home testing kits among a large and diverse cohort of men and women enrolled in the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS) in the USA.

INTRODUCTION: Cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender women, cisgender women and cisgender men who have sex with women only (MSW) have differential risk of acquiring Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC), the two most commonly reported bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the USA. Similarly, MSM and transgender women have a higher number of syphilis infections in the USA than other groups. The presence of any of these three STIs is a significant risk factor for HIV acquisition and transmission, unless taking antiretroviral medication for HIV pr

The Relationship Between HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis Use and Laboratory-Confirmed Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infection Positivity Among a Diverse, Multi-City Cohort of Sexually Active Sexual and Gender Minorities in the United States.

The presence of chlamydia, gonorrhea, or syphilis infection is a significant risk factor for HIV acquisition and transmission and disproportionately impacts men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women. While HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) reduces HIV risk, its use may influence sexual behaviors, potentially increasing sexually transmitted infection (STI) exposure. Conversely, PrEP users are often more engaged in care, regularly screened and treated for STIs, and may access other prevention tools such as doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis. Studies on the relationship between PrE

Are we there yet? A roadmap from a statewide population-based analysis of STI patterns among people with HIV, with implications for morbidity, transmission and ending the HIV epidemic.

BACKGROUND: Ongoing sexually transmitted infection (STI) transmission reflects inequitable access to sexual healthcare services. STI reinfection pre-HIV and post-HIV infection is a proxy measure of sexual behaviour for people with HIV (PWH). Surveillance data show that recommended screenings are not occurring, leading to missed opportunities. Gaps exist about the true picture of STI infection and reinfection among PWH from pre-HIV to post-HIV diagnosis. To end the HIV epidemic and achieve national HIV goals of preventing new infections, synergistic STI/HIV screening is important to limit coinf

Prevalence and co-occurrence of sexually transmitted infections among heterosexual couples in southern Uganda: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Partner-level sexually transmitted infection (STI) data from eastern Africa are rare, despite high STI burden. To address this gap, we examined STI prevalence and clustering among cohabiting couples in two high HIV-burden Ugandan communities, representing the largest population-based, couple-level STI study in the region. METHODS: We analysed data from the Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevalence Study (STIPS), a cross-sectional, population-based study in southern Uganda which tested participants for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas, syphilis, high-titre syphilis and herpes simp

Diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections among emergency department patients.

INTRODUCTION: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a major public health concern, with emergency departments (EDs) serving as key sites for evaluation and treatment. Despite their importance, contemporary national-level data describing ED testing and treatment practices for patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of STI are limited. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of ED encounters from 2016 to 2024 using Cosmos, a large geographically diverse electronic health record database. Patients aged ≥15 years with symptoms suggestive of an STI were included. We examine

Diagnostic performance evaluation of the Abbott Bioline™ HIV/Syphilis Duo rapid test at the national public health laboratory, Yaounde-Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: The Bioline™ HIV/Syphilis Duo rapid diagnostic test (RDT) is the first World Health Organization (WHO) prequalified Duo RDT for the simultaneous detection of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Treponema pallidum antibodies in human blood samples. Several studies have shown the satisfactory diagnostic performance of this test among vulnerable populations such as pregnant women. However, the diagnostic performance of this Duo test is scarce in the general population in Cameroon. The present study aimed to assess the diagnostic performance of the Abbot Bioline™ HIV/Syphilis Duo RD

Towards triple elimination of HIV, syphilis and HBV mother-to-child transmission: Protocol of a simplified and integrated strategy in Burkina Faso and The Gambia: Protocol for the phase 1 of the TRI-MOM project.

INTRODUCTION: Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B virus (HBV) commonly observed in the WHO African region is associated with excess morbidity and mortality. Despite some progress, the coverage of interventions to prevent MTCT of these infections remains insufficient, particularly for syphilis and HBV. To fulfil these gaps and achieve the triple elimination of MTCT of these infections by 2030, the World Health Organization (WHO) advocates for integration of prevention of MTCT (PMTCT) activities for HBV with HIV and syphilis antenatal services. Gaps in syphilis screening for patients receiving sexually transmitted infection testing in the emergency department.

OBJECTIVES: To assess gaps in emergency department (ED) syphilis screening in patients receiving testing for other sexually transmitted infections (STI) within a large healthcare system in Upstate South Carolina (SC). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of patients (aged 13+) tested for STIs (gonorrhea, chlamydia, or trichomonas) across eight EDs from 1/1/2020-12/31/2024 was examined. A missed opportunity (MO) for syphilis screening was defined as absent syphilis screening during any ED encounter where STI testing obtained. Adjusted logistic regression identified characteristics associated

Sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections testing among people who use substances: findings from the 2023 British Columbia Harm Reduction Client Survey.

BACKGROUND: People who use substances (PWUS) experience disproportionately higher burden of sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections (STBBIs) compared to the general population. Harm reduction supply distribution sites are recognized as potential access points for STBBI testing among PWUS. However, little is known about the uptake of STBBI testing among PWUS who access these sites. This study aimed to identify factors associated with recent STBBI testing among PWUS accessing harm reduction sites. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from the 2023 Harm Reduction Client Survey in Brit

Pre-exposure prophylaxis use in blood donors in England.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The For the Assessment of Individualized Risk (FAIR) framework, introduced by NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) in 2021, aims to reduce stigma and improve equity in blood donor selection, particularly for gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). While pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective at preventing sexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus, its declared use excludes individuals from blood donation. This study examined PrEP use among male blood donors with current or past syphilis in England to evaluate guideline compliance

Sexually Transmitted Infections at a Health Clinic Serving Older Adolescents and Young Adults: An Analysis of Demographics, Healthcare Access, and Positivity Rates.

OBJECTIVES: Young adults aged 18 to 24 face increased risk for acquiring sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and reduced access to healthcare as they transition into adulthood and assume responsibility for their health. Furthermore, racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual minority young adults are at an increased risk for STIs and are less likely to have health insurance. This study evaluates the demographics of young adults undergoing STI and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing at a sexual health clinic, and the impact of healthcare access and insurance status on the likelihood of STI di

High-risk human papillomavirus and HBV, HCV, and T. pallidum association among women living with HIV in selected health facilities of Mekelle, Tigray, Northern Ethiopia.

Background: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as Treponema pallidum (T. pallidum), Hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV), and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) are significant global health threats. High-risk HPV (HR-HPV), particularly associated with various cancers, poses increased risks when other infections co-occur. However, there is limited data regarding the prevalence of HBV, HCV, and T. pallidum alongside high-risk HPV in women living with Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Ethiopia. This study focuses on exploring the association between these infections and HR-HPV in Mekelle

Descriptive epidemiology of opportunistic infections among patients with advanced HIV disease in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: Although people living with HIV (PLHIV) increasingly have access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) worldwide, the recurrence of advanced HIV disease (AHD) remains a major concern, exposing them to an enhanced risk of opportunistic infections (OIs) and subsequent death. We aimed here to describe the epidemiology of OIs among patients with AHD in Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC) to inform future actions against AHD-related deaths. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among consecutive AHD patients admitted to Biyela Hospital Center in Kinshasa (DRC)—a periphe

Syphilis infection and incident dementia in two real-world cohorts: A harmonized propensity-matched analysis in Taiwan NHIRD and TriNetX Asia-Pacific.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis is a treatable infection with established neurotropism and broad systemic inflammatory consequences, but population-level evidence linking a history of syphilis to later dementia remains limited. We examined this association across two independent real-world data sources using harmonized analytic methods. METHODS: We conducted retrospective cohort analyses in Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD, 2001-2020) and the TriNetX Asia-Pacific electronic health record network (2001-2020). Adults aged 20 years or older with syphilis were propensity-score mat
