Associations between postural kyphosis and tactile sensation, proprioception, and body image in young individuals: an analytical cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Postural kyphosis is considered a common spinal alignment disorder characterized by an increased thoracic curvature without structural vertebral abnormalities. Changes in sagittal alignment may affect load distribution throughout the body and alter sensorimotor integration, thereby influencing somatosensory inputs and body perception. However, to our knowledge, no previous study has simultaneously evaluated trunk and plantar tactile sensitivity, proprioception, and body image perception in young adults with postural kyphosis. Understanding these multidimensional alterations is clin

Persian validation of the Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire-Deformity and the Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire-Brace in adolescents with hyperkyphosis.

PURPOSE: Hyperkyphosis, which includes Scheuermann's and postural kyphosis, is a sagittal spinal deformity affecting adolescents' self-image, psychosocial well-being, and satisfaction with their spinal appearance. Non-surgical treatments, particularly bracing, aim to prevent curve progression but may also induce psychological stress, thereby impacting quality of life (QoL). This study evaluated the reliability and validity of the Persian Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaires (P-BSSQ-Deformity and P-BSSQ-Brace) and measured stress levels in adolescents with hyperkyphosis who are undergoing brace

Phenotypical, Behavioral, and Systemic Hallmarks in End-Point Mouse Scenarios.

The state of frailty is a clinical-biological syndrome that affects the older population with a higher risk of functional dependence. Animal models can provide a tool to study this complex scenario. In the present work, we analyzed the physical and behavioral hallmarks of end-point status in 16-month-old mice (C57BL/6J) according to animal welfare regulations compared to age-matched counterparts with normal aging. A group of 6-month-old mice was added to control for age bias. First, we identified 'structural kyphosis' (visible and unmodifiable deformation in locomotion) correlated with piloere

Regional interdependence between senile kyphosis and cervical postural syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Although senile kyphosis may not be the primary reason older people seek medical attention, it can cause functional difficulties and associated health risks. Kyphotic curvature can be alleviated through conservative measures, which are also a viable option to relieve the discomfort caused by the abnormalities. This case study describes successful multimodal chiropractic treatment for senile kyphosis and cervical postural syndrome. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide evidence for the concept of regional interdependence between senile kyphosis and cervical postural syndrome.

Quadratic Spline Fitting for Robust Measurement of Thoracic Kyphosis Using Key Vertebral Landmarks.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to present a kyphosis measurement method based on quadratic spline fitting through three key vertebral landmarks: T12, T8 and T4. This approach aims to capture thoracic spine curvature more continuously and accurately than traditional methods such as the Cobb angle and circle fitting. Methods: A dataset of 560 lateral thoracic spine radiographs was retrospectively analyzed, including cases of postural kyphosis, Scheuermann's disease, osteoporosis-induced kyphosis and ankylosing spondylitis. Two trained raters independently performed three repeated landma

Influence of Spinal Sagittal Alignment in Sitting Posture on the Swallowing Speed of Older Adult Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Thoracolumbar kyphosis in sitting posture is associated with forward head posture and may adversely affect swallowing function. However, few studies have investigated the effect of spinal alignment in the sitting posture on the swallowing function of older adults. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate whether spinal alignment in the sitting posture influences the swallowing function of older adult women. Overall, 18 older adult women (mean age, 69.78 ± 3.66 years) without dysphagia were enrolled. Participants were positioned in two sitting postures, namely, comfortable sitting (CS) a

Is Thoracic Kyphosis Relevant to Pain, Autonomic Nervous System Function, Disability, and Cervical Sensorimotor Control in Patients with Chronic Nonspecific Neck Pain?

There is great interest in thoracic kyphosis, as it is thought to be a contributor to neck pain, neck disability, and sensorimotor control measures; however, this has not been completely investigated in treatment or case control studies. This case control design investigated participants with non-specific chronic neck pain. Eighty participants with a defined hyper-kyphosis (>55°) were compared to eighty matched participants with normal thoracic kyphosis (<55°). Participants were matched for age and neck pain duration. Hyper-kyphosis was further categorized into two distinct types: postural kyp

Effect of Spinal Sagittal Alignment in Sitting Posture on Swallowing Function in Healthy Adult Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Swallowing function is both directly and indirectly related to postures, such as head and cervical angle and body position. However, the effects of different sitting postures on oropharyngeal swallowing have not been investigated. This study aimed to investigate whether the change in thoracolumbar alignment affected the oropharyngeal swallowing. A total of 58 healthy adult women (mean age 22.2 ± 1.67 years) without dysphagia were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Participants were positioned in three sitting postures: comfortable sitting (CS), thoracic upright sitting (TUS), and slump si

Reliability and validity of a kyphosis-specific spinal appearance questionnaire.

PURPOSE: Hyperkyphosis, including Scheuermann and postural kyphosis, is associated with decreased perceived cosmesis and well being. No patient reported outcome questionnaire specific to kyphosis exists. We sought to assess the internal consistency, test-retest reliability and concurrent validity of a new Kyphosis-specific Spinal Appearance Questionnaire (K-SAQ). METHODS: A K-SAQ was developed from a modified SAQ to measure kyphosis-specific aspects of appearance. Patients with hyperkyphosis (ages 10-20 years) curves ≥ 50° completed the K-SAQ and SRS-22R at baseline and the K-SAQ 2 weeks late
