Late-Onset Paraplegia in Old Healed Spinal Tuberculosis Due to Traumatic Fracture of Fusion Mass - A Rare Case Report.

The natural healing of spinal tuberculosis occurs by spontaneous fusion of vertebral bodies with or without kyphotic deformity. Late-onset paraplegia secondary to the fracture of fusion mass in tuberculosis is one of the rare conditions which have not been extensively reported. A 56-year-old male patient sustained road traffic accident was diagnosed with a fracture of fusion mass in already healed tuberculosis. He was presented with weakness in both the lower limbs with ASIA-C grading of spinal cord injury. He was treated with posterior instrumented stabilization and decompression. The patient

Over 70° thoracic idiopathic scoliosis: Results with screws or hybrid constructs.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type of scoliosis. High degrees curve can be treated with the anterior, posterior, or combined anterior-posterior approach. Contrarily to the anterior approach, the posterior one is widely used nowadays for its good correction outcomes and relatively low-complication rate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated retrospectively 27 patients, treated with posterior approach. Patients were divided into two groups, namely pedicle screws group (PSG) and hybrid group (pedicle screws + sublaminar bands). Radiographic measurements, including

Association between the trunk muscle function performance and the presence of vertebral fracture in older women with low bone mass.

BACKGROUND: Despite the clinical importance, it has remained unclear which changes in the trunk muscle function parameters are more associated with the presence of vertebral fracture (VF). AIMS: The aim of this study was to verify the association between the trunk muscle function performance and the presence of VF in older women with low bone mass. The secondary aim was to evaluate the correlation between trunk muscle function and both fall history and muscle mass. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was composed by 94 women over 60 years within value of T-Score lumbar spine BMD  <- 1.0 DP.

A CARE-compliant article: A case report of scoliosis complicated with multicentric carpotarsal osteolysis.

RATIONALE: Multicentric carpotarsal osteolysis (MCTO) is a rare hereditary disease caused by mutations in MafB, a negative regulator of osteoclastogenesis. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 20-year-old, Japanese woman with scoliosis visited our institute for treatment. Scoliosis was apparent since she was 12 years old, but she had not sought treatment until the age of 19. Medical examination showed a typical facial appearance associated with a small forehead and hypotelorism; shortening of the fingers of both hands and both upper limbs was observed, in addition to clubfoot. No café au lait spots or mental

Correlations between the sagittal plane parameters of the spine and pelvis and lumbar disc degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that lumbar disc herniation, degenerative lumbar instability, and other degenerative lumbar spinal diseases are often secondary to disc degeneration. By studying the intervertebral disc, researchers have clarified the pathological changes involved in intervertebral disc degeneration but have ignored the roles of biomechanical factors in the development of disc degeneration. This study aims to investigate the relationships among the location, scope, and extent of lumbar disc degeneration and sagittal spinal-pelvic parameters. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was

Spinal epidural lipomatosis - an easily ignored secondary intraspinal disorder in spinal kyphotic deformities.

BACKGROUND: A previous study reported a high prevalence of spinal epidural lipomatosis (SEL) in patients with Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) and suggested that it may play a role in the pathogenesis of this disease. According to our observation, however, SEL occurs in other spinal kyphotic deformities as well. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that SEL commonly occurs in patients with different types of kyphotic deformities as a secondary intraspinal disorder. METHODS: MR images of 16 patients with congenital kyphosis (CK), 40 patients with SK, 13 patients with tuberculotic kyphosis

Scheuermann's disease in a juvenile male from the late Roman necropolis of Torrenueva (3rd-4th century CE, Granada, Spain).

This study details a severe case of Scheuermann's disease (SD) in a well-preserved skeleton of a juvenile male (designated TOR302), dated to 3rd-4th century CE, from the late Roman necropolis of Torrenueva (Granada, Spain). Individual TOR302 shows an evident kyphotic curve in the thoraco-lumbar spine, which is characterised by: (i) vertebral bodies of thoracic vertebra T2, thoracic segment T4-T9, and thoraco-lumbar segment T12-L2 wedged at >5°; (ii) slight anterior extensions of the epiphyseal ring; (iii) Schmorl's nodes on the superior and/or inferior plates; and (iv) a Cobb angle of 75°, der

Pulmonary anatomy and a case of unilateral aplasia in a common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina): developmental perspectives on cryptodiran lungs.

The common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) is a well studied and broadly distributed member of Testudines; however, very little is known concerning developmental anomalies and soft tissue pathologies of turtles and other reptiles. Here, we present an unusual case of unilateral pulmonary aplasia, asymmetrical carapacial kyphosis, and mild scoliosis in a live adult C. serpentina. The detailed three-dimensional (3D) anatomy of the respiratory system in both the pathological and normal adult C. serpentina, and a hatchling are visualized using computed tomography (CT), microCT, and 3D digital

[Spinal orthoses in the treatment of vertebral fractures with osteoporosis : A systematic review article].

This literature search concerning the potential role of spinal orthoses for rehabilitation and treatment of atraumatic vertebral fractures between Th4 and L5 with osteoporosis and without any evidence for a secondary cause, provided no evidence for the benefits of traditional rigid thoracolumbar corsets, which only had a poor compliance. In addition, there are indications that these rigid corsets may even worsen the disease condition especially in the long-term. Wearing these corsets can result in further loss of muscle mass and strength followed by loss of bone and bone mass. Both together ca

Multilevel Contiguous Osteoporotic Lumbar Compression Fractures: The Relationship of Scoliosis to the Development of Cascading Fractures.

Osteoporotic patients can present with either single or multiple fractures secondary to repeated falls and progressive osteoporosis. Multiple fractures often lead to additional spinal deformity and are a sign of more severe osteoporosis. In the thoracic spine, multiple fractures are associated with the development of gradual thoracic kyphosis but neurologic deficits are uncommon. In the lumbar spine, patients with multiple lumbar fractures have more constant lumbar pain, may have symptoms related to concurrent lumbar stenosis or degenerative scoliosis, and may present with radiculopathy, espec

Clinical comparison of postoperative results of balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) versus radiofrequency-targeted vertebral augmentation (RF-TVA): a prospective clinical study.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporotic vertebral fractures are a frequent occurrence in geriatric traumatology. Differences in the achievement of pain reduction and restoration of the height of the vertebral body after balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) or radiofrequency-targeted vertebral augmentation (RF-TVA) were to be tested on a randomized population. METHODS: A total of 80 patients (f = 59; m = 21) with osteoporotic fractures of vertebral bodies were assigned to the groups BKP (n = 44) or RF-TVA (n = 36). The clinical analyses were compared peri- and postoperatively in a prospective study with an additional

A decision analysis to identify the ideal treatment for adult spinal deformity: is surgery better than non-surgical treatment in improving health-related quality of life and decreasing the disease burden?

BACKGROUND: Adult spinal deformity (ASD) is a major public health problem. There are pros and cons of the available treatment alternatives (surgical or non-surgical) and it had been difficult to identify the best treatment modality. AIM: To construct a statistical DA model to identify the optimum overall treatment in ASD. METHODS: From an international multicentre database of ASD patients (968 pts), 535 who had completed 1 year follow-up (371 non-surgical-NS, 164 surgical-S), constitute the population of this study. DA was structured in two main steps of: (1) baseline analysis (assessing the

[Deformations of the vertebral column in the visually impaired schoolchildren presenting with complicated high myopia and the possibilities for its correction].

Complicated high myopia is one of the leading causes responsible for the disablement in the children associated with visual impairment especially when it is combined with other pathological conditions and abnormalities among which are disorders of the musculoskeletal system. In the present study, we for the first time examined visually impaired schoolchildren (n=44) who suffered from high myopia complications making use of the computed optical topographer for the evaluation of the state of their vertebral column. The control group consisted of 60 children attending a secondary school. The stud

Combined preoperative traction with instrumented posterior occipitocervical fusion for severe ventral brainstem compression secondary to displaced os odontoideum: technical report of 2 cases.

Severe os odontoideum causing ventral brainstem compression is a rare and difficult entity to treat. It is generally accepted that severe os odontoideum causing ventral brainstem compression and neurological deficits warrants surgical treatment. This often requires both anterior and posterior procedures. Anterior approaches to the craniocervical junction are fraught with complications, including infection and risk of injury to neurovascular structures. External traction systems traditionally require long-term bedrest. The authors report 2 cases of severe ventral brainstem compression secondary
