Both vertebral body wedging and disc wedging are found in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients with thoracolumbar kyphosis. However, their relative contribution to thoracolumbar kyphosis is not fully understood. The objective of this study was to compare different contributions of vertebral and disc wedging to the thoracolumbar kyphosis in AS patients, and to analyze the relationship between the apical vertebral wedging angle and thoracolumbar kyphosis. From October 2009 to October 2013, a total of 59 consecutive AS patients with thoracolumbar kyphosis with a mean age of 38.1 years were recruit

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective comparative study.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the surgical results of anterior and posterior combined surgery (AP) and posterior fixation with vertebroplasty (VP) for treating osteoporotic delayed vertebral collapse.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The optimal treatment of osteoporotic delayed vertebral collapse has been controversial. Because of aged patients' numerous comorbid medical complications and frequent instrumentation failure secondary to osteoporosis, it is challenging for surgeons to manage osteoporotic delayed vertebral collapse. In spite of this, there have

PURPOSE: Defective posterior spinal arch and paraspinal musculature lead to progressive kyphosis in patients with myelomeningocele. Kyphosis decreases the patients' functional status and quality of life. To correct or prevent further deterioration, different surgical techniques have been introduced. Our aim is to present our clinical experience in kyphectomy and pedicle screw fixation with a posterior-only approach in pediatric patients with myelomeningocele and to discuss the technique with a review of the literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four patients with lumbar and 2 patients with thora

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive surgery has expanded over the past two decades and was initially used for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation. Later, this approach was used to treat other spine pathologies, as well as to perform spinal fusion and extended spinal decompression. In this study, we report our experience regarding the use of a minimal surgical approach in the treatment of intradural extramedullary spinal cord tumours.
METHODS: Between January 2008 and July 2013, 18 patients with an intradural extramedullary tumour were included in the study (13 thoracic, 4 lumbar and one cervic

REVIEW QUESTION/OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review is to assess the effectiveness of selective thoracic fusion as a form of treatment in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). This will be compared with all other forms of operative management for major structural thoracic curves.
BACKGROUND: Scoliosis is defined as a lateral curvature of the spine of at least 10 degrees, as measured by the Cobb angle. It can be categorized into three broad categories - neuromuscular, congenital and idiopathic. Of these categories, idiopathic is by far the most common, and is a diagnosis of exclusion. Idi

Balance tests are commonly used to screen for impairments that put older adults at risk for falls. The purpose of this study was to determine the attributes that were associated with balance performance as measured by the Frailty and Injuries: Cooperative Studies of Intervention Techniques (FICSIT) balance test. This study was a cross-sectional secondary analysis of baseline data from a longitudinal cohort study, the Boston Rehabilitative Impairment Study of the Elderly (Boston RISE). Boston RISE was performed in an outpatient rehabilitation research center and evaluated Boston area primary ca

As part of the Nucleotide Excision Repair (NER) process, the endonuclease XPG is involved in repair of helix-distorting DNA lesions, but the protein has also been implicated in several other DNA repair systems, complicating genotype-phenotype relationship in XPG patients. Defects in XPG can cause either the cancer-prone condition xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) alone, or XP combined with the severe neurodevelopmental disorder Cockayne Syndrome (CS), or the infantile lethal cerebro-oculo-facio-skeletal (COFS) syndrome, characterized by dramatic growth failure, progressive neurodevelopmental abnormal

BACKGROUND: Secondary posttraumatic spinal kyphosis is a fixed deformity that has an asymptomatic presentation in most patients, but in some, persistent pain and disability can develop refractory to conservative treatment, which may result in the need for corrective surgery. Our aim was to analyze the modification of sagittal alignment and the variation in compensation mechanisms of spinal-pelvic segments before and after surgical correction in a group of patients with symptomatic posttraumatic kyphosis.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 16 consecutive patients from the beginning of 20

STUDY DESIGN: A case series depicting the results of a novel surgical technique.
OBJECTIVE: To prove that a minimally invasive surgical technique can effectively control and even correct congenital scoliosis caused by a fully segmented hemivertebra.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Congenital hemivertebrae have been treated by anterior and posterior growth arrest with/without fusion, anterior and posterior hemivertebrectomy, transpedicular hemivertebra excision, and transpedicular hemiepiphysiodesis. These approaches are complex and require experience. There is a need for a simple treatment metho

BACKGROUND: Scalp dysesthesia is characterized by abnormal sensations of the scalp in the absence of any other unusual physical examination findings. The pathogenesis of this condition is unknown but has been reported in the setting of underlying psychiatric disorders. Other localized pruritic syndromes, including brachioradial pruritus and notalgia paresthetica, have been associated with pathologic conditions of the spine and have been successfully treated with gabapentin.
OBSERVATIONS: Among 15 women identified in a retrospective review of medical records as having been seen with scalp dyse

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Improvements in surgical techniques and medical support have made reconstruction of adult scoliosis more feasible. In an attempt to reduce the risk of complications, some surgeons have chosen to stage these procedures.
PURPOSE: We sought to compare a staged group versus an unstaged group of patients undergoing posterior-only instrumentation and fusion from the thoracic spine to the pelvis by a single surgeon for degenerative kyphoscoliosis or residual, progressive adolescent idiopathic scoliosis to assess for a difference in complications.
STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: Retrospect

OBJECT: Cervical spondylolysis is a rare condition that results from a pars interarticularis defect. The C-6 level is the most frequently involved site in the cervical spine. Its clinical presentations range from incidental radiographic findings to neck pain and, rarely, neurological deficits. Although 150 patients with subaxial cervical spondylolysis have been reported, a mere 24 adult and pediatric patients with C-2 spondylolysis have been described. The long-term outcomes of very young children with bilateral C-2 spondylolysis are of great interest, yet only a few longitudinal studies exist

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the overall surgical outcome of lumbar fusion surgery in patients with Parkinson disease (PD). SUMMARY OF BACK GROUND DATA: Poor bone quality and muscular dysfunction are important clinical manifestations connected with musculoskeletal diseases in PD patients. These secondary changes caused by PD often result in spinal pathology, indicating spine operations for some patients with scoliosis, kyphosis, osteoporotic fracture, or degenerative spondylosis. However, little is known about the surgical outcome or prognosis of spine surgery
