Mice lacking ClC-3 chloride channels, encoded by the Clcn3 gene, undergo neurodegeneration of the hippocampal formation and retina [Neuron, 29 (2001) 185-196; Genes Cells, 7 (2002) 597-605]. We independently created a mouse lacking the Clcn3 gene which demonstrated similar central nervous system abnormalities, including early postnatal degeneration of retinal photoreceptors. However, we observed a characteristic spatial-temporal sequence of hippocampal neurodegeneration that differs from the pattern previously reported. Anterior-to-posterior degeneration and astrogliosis of the dentate gyrus a

AIM: To register also minor variations of posture sa simple and economic procedure should be worked out to categorize posture types concerning quality as well quantity.
METHOD: On the Image of the lateral body profile three reference points were determined which allow us to measure two distances and two angles.
RESULTS: The relation of the two distances reflects the degree of kyphosis, the angles indicate on the one hand the inclination of the spinal sagittal configuration and on the other hand the degree of lordosis. The measured values are shown in the Kyphosis-Inclination-Lordosis system

The Alström syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by retinal degeneration, obesity, progressive hearing impairment, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and kidney and heart failure. Mental retardation is absent and the extremities are normal. The Alström syndrome gene located on chromosome 2, has been recently identified. The Alström syndrome involves multiple organ systems with a complex interaction between pathways. Phenotypic expression varies considerably, even within sibships. Manifestations observed in some, but not all, Alström syndrome patients include acan

PURPOSE: An aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a rapidly expansile and destructive benign tumor of bone that is usually treated by curettage and bone graft, with or without adjuvant treatment. For recurrent tumors, or tumors for which surgery would result in significant functional morbidity, does radiotherapy (RT) provide a safe and effective alternative for local control?
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nine patients with histologically diagnosed aneurysmal bone cysts without other associated benign or malignant tumors were treated at the University of Florida with megavoltage RT between February 1964 and

Camptocormia is defined as a forced posture with a forward-bent trunk which appears during standing and sitting. It was first described in 1818 by Brodie. In the last 100 years, numerous cases were observed. A psychogenic origin was presumed in most cases. We describe four patients with typical symptoms of camptocormia who present with the clinical and electromyographical criteria of a segmental dystonia. A new classification of camptocormia is proposed including (1) the primary form, a segmental dystonia of the abdominal wall muscles and (2) secondary forms. Among other conditions (psychogeni

A nervous system with muscle to do its bidding elevates the animal above the plant world. Much of what happens in the body, good or bad, involves muscular action. A muscle may underact or quit. It may also overact, even to the point of rupturing. Since muscles come in pairs, a muscular action is a double effect requiring coordination between the mated muscles. Cooperation between paired muscles is sometimes lacking and both muscles contract or relax simultaneously so the desired effect does not happen, or destructive conflict develops which leads to various secondary disorders and chain reacti

Primary bone tumors and tumor-like lesions of the vertebral column are rare in children. After operative tumor resection, 25 children under the age of 17 could be reviewed in a retrospective analysis. Malignant bone tumors occurred only twice in the region of the vertebral body. No deformity was registered in 9 of 16 cases after local tumor resection with and without laminectomy on one level. In contrast, after resection of one or both facets in combination with laminectomy cranial to L4 or thoracal, progressive kyphosis was found within 6-22 months postoperatively in four cases. This required

BACKGROUND: Proximal junctional failure (PJF) following multilevel thoracolumbar instrumented to the pelvis for adult spinal deformity (ASD) is relatively uncommon but considerably disabling. While the leading etiology is mechanical, other rarer etiologies can play a role in its development. The purpose of this study was to present a case series of ASD patients who experienced PJF secondary to proximal junctional spondylodiscitis (PJS) after long-segment thoracolumbar posterior instrumented fusions.
METHODS: Adult patients who underwent posterior instrumented fusions at a single academic cent

The operative treatment of congenital scoliosis secondary to hemivertebra may involve in situ spinal epiphysiodesis, in situ fusion, or hemivertebra excision. The technique described in this paper, simultaneous anterior and posterior resection of the hemivertebra and correction of deformity with posterior instrumentation, has evolved from many different surgical methods used by the senior author in the past. This series of 11 patients describes the resection technique, degree of deformity correction, and complications encountered with this approach to a very difficult clinical problem. The pre

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective cross-sectional case-control study.
OBJECTIVES: To compare spinal curvatures in women with osteoporosis and control subjects with a new instrument, the curviscope.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Few instruments are available for measuring spinal curvatures in the sagittal plane. Most of them have poor reproducibility, and they have been poorly investigated in osteoporosis.
METHODS: Ninety-eight postmenopausal women were evaluated. They were divided into two groups, according to their bone status: women with osteoporosis with at least one vertebral fracture (n = 51)

A case is reported of an 85-year-old woman with mandibular osteomyelitis secondary to a submental pressure sore. The main aetiological factors in the development of the pressure sore were dementia and severe senile kyphosis. Pressure sores are rare in the head and neck region and, though osteomyelitis is a common complication at other anatomical sites, it has not been previously reported in the mandible.

The progression of kyphosis in myelomeningocele is independent of skeletal growth and requires early operative correction and stabilization to prevent a loss of sitting ability. In severe cases, only vertebrectomy makes it possible to achieve correction, stability and skin-closure without tension. In 14 patients with myelomeningocele gibbus, kyphectomy was performed, removing two vertebral bodies on average. The average kyphosis angle decreased from 128 degrees to 81 degrees, enabling most of the patients to participate again in social life by restoring wheelchair mobility. Nevertheless, a sig

STUDY DESIGN: In this retrospective study, the incidence of anterior cervical hardware failure was reviewed in 109 patients with degenerative disorders treated by one surgeon.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the risk of injury caused by hardware failure in anterior cervical spine reconstruction.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Anterior plating is used for stabilization after cervical spine trauma and other conditions of instability. There has been a concern among surgeons about the risks involved when anterior cervical plating fails (fracturing or loosening of the construct).
METHODS: The series includ

Scheuermann's thoracic kyphosis is a structural deformity classically characterized by anterior wedging of 5 degrees or more of three adjacent thoracic vertebral bodies. Secondary radiographic findings of Schmorl's nodes, endplate narrowing, and irregular endplates confirm the diagnosis. The etiology remains unclear. Adolescents typically present to medical attention because of cosmetic deformity; adults more commonly present because of increased pain. The indications for treatment are similar to those for other spinal deformities, namely, progression of the deformity, pain, neurologic comprom

Tumors that arise outside the substance of the spinal cord can be divided into intradural but extramedullary lesions and extradural and extramedullary lesions. Different groups of tumors appear at different sites and behave quite differently. The presentation, however, can be quite similar and is distinct from that of an intraparenchymal spinal cord mass. The prognosis depends on the histopathology. In cases of cord compression, surgery is indicated, but for many of the other tumors, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are appropriate, particularly if the lesion is a metastatic process. Both tr

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Severe idiopathic scoliosis is associated with respiratory failure. This usually is secondary to restrictive airway disease and reduced vital capacity. Patients may also suffer from an increase in airway resistance when severe kyphoscoliosis is present.
SETTING: Three patients (two of whom required assisted ventilation) with varying degrees of kyphoscoliosis presented with moderate to severe breathing difficulties.
INTERVENTION: Bronchoscopic examination of these patients showed evidence of torsion with secondary obstruction of the central airways.
RESULTS: The airway obstr

The authors present a retrospective study based on a homogeneous series of 34 patients with burst fractures of the thoracolumbar junction, fixed using Cotrel-Dubousset instrumentation. These patients underwent instrumentation using a short construct of hooks and screws gripping the two vertebrae above the lesion (2HS) and screws and hooks gripping the first vertebra below the lesion (1SH). This construct was therefore called "2HS-1SH". In order to evaluate just the material resistance after getting up, only the patients who were upright on the 4th day without a body cast and with no secondary
