BACKGROUND: Anencephaly is a deadly type of cephalic axial skeletal and neural disorder with a multifactorial aetiology that causes the failure of the rostral neuropore closure, compromising the formation of the neural folds, basicranium, and neurocranium. In cetaceans, there is only one report of this fetal abnormality, dated in late 1991, in a male stillborn Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) and diagnosed using transabdominal ultrasonography on its mother that was kept under human care in the Ocean Park Corporation. After birth, physical and general radiographic examination

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) has emerged as a pivotal technology in neurosurgery, significantly enhancing patient safety and surgical outcomes by providing real-time monitoring of neurological functions. Despite its recognized benefits, the adoption and development of IONM in regions like West Africa have been relatively slow, with Ghana pioneering its introduction and utilization. This report explores the evolution of IONM in Ghana, initiated by FOCOS Hospital, and examines its expansion across the region. The report highlights key developments, including the first use

BACKGROUND: Achondroplasia (ACH) is the most common skeletal dysplasia and is characterized by a short-limbed short stature, sagittal spinal malalignment, and genu varum. Vosoritide promotes longitudinal bone growth in children with ACH; however, its effects on various disease-specific complications, other than short stature, are unknown. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of vosoritide on spinal and lower limb malalignment in children with ACH.
METHODS: This single-center, open-label, prospective study included patients with ACH aged younger than or equal to 15 years who

Dropped head syndrome (DHS), also known as camptocephalia, is characterized by a mobile chin-on-chest deformity from hypotonia of the cervical extensor muscle or hypertonia of the anterior neck muscles. There remains a paucity of quality published literature on this topic, particularly its management. The objective of this study is to identify radiographic and clinical outcomes of surgery as compared to nonsurgical treatment, to summarize the literature, and to create a decision-making paradigm for managing patients with DHS. As such, we report outcomes of our retrospective chart review series

INTRODUCTION: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease, frequently involving the spine;however, its impact on adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery outcomes remains inconclusive. In patients undergoing ASD surgery, we sought to evaluate: 1) impact of RA on mechanical complications and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and 2) effect of steroid-use and disease modifying antirheumatic drugs DMARDs on postoperative outcomes.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed for patients with RA undergoing ASD surgery from 2009 to 2021. Inclusion criteria were: ≥ 5-leve

BACKGROUND: Pushing activities are associated with a considerable risk for back disorders. Previous findings verify that pushing tasks influence trunk position, but do not establish how spinal posture and curvature change when pushing while walking. There is no information about how changes in spinal curvature are influenced by the load being pushed and the velocity at which it is pushed.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Purpose of this study was therefore to evaluate the effect on spinal posture of varying loads during the sustained phase of pushing activities while walking at different velocities.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic fractures of the vertebral bodies in the thoracolumbar region are the most common type of spinal fractures. Some studies suggest that neurological deficits associated with these fractures may be linked to spinal canal compromise, kyphosis angle, and other factors. However, this relationship remains controversial. The present study aimed to identify the risk factors for neurologic deficits following thoracolumbar burst fractures (TBF).
METHODS: This study included 322 patients with TBF, comprising 115 patients with lamina fractures (LF) and 207 patients without lamina f

Introduction Hyperkyphosis is a deformity of the spine's forward curvature in the sagittal alignment, and its indices include the sagittal vertical axis (SVA), thoracic kyphosis (TK), and lumbar lordosis angle (LLA). These indices are difficult to evaluate in patients who cannot maintain a standing position. Therefore, we sought to determine whether the mean clavicular tilt angle, which can be evaluated regardless of the patient's posture, can be used as an indicator of hyperkyphosis. We hypothesized that the mean clavicular tilt angle would correlate with established sagittal spinal alignment
