Static vs Expandable Cages in Single-Level Prone Transpsoas Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion: A Retrospective Radiographic Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Prone transpsoas lateral lumbar interbody fusion (PTP-LLIF) enables simultaneous lateral interbody access and posterior instrumentation from a single prone position. While expandable interbody cages have demonstrated improved radiographic restoration in other lumbar fusion approaches, their outcomes in PTP-LLIF remain poorly defined. This study compares radiographic and perioperative outcomes between static and expandable cages in single-level PTP-LLIF. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a single academic center evaluating patients who underwent single-level PT

Hypoxic link between cancer cells and the immune system: The role of adenosine and lactate.

The mu-opioid receptor (OR) is involved in several aspects of female reproductive neuroendocrinology, such as the control of gonadotropin release and the display of lordosis behavior. Even though the neuroendocrine events modulated by mu-ORs are steroid hormone-dependent, few studies have shown how steroid hormones such as estrogen and/or progesterone can affect mu-OR function. Therefore, the present study investigated if in vivo estrogen or estrogen plus progesterone treatment of ovariectomized (OVX) rats affects mu-OR coupling to its G proteins. We used autoradiographic analysis of agonist-s

Predicting pediatric patient rehabilitation outcomes after spinal deformity surgery with artificial intelligence.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common type of scoliosis, affecting 1-4% of adolescents. The Scoliosis Research Society-22R (SRS-22R), a health-related quality-of-life instrument for AIS, has allowed orthopedists to measure subjective patient outcomes before and after corrective surgery beyond objective radiographic measurements. However, research has revealed that there is no significant correlation between the correction rate in major radiographic parameters and improvements in patient-reported outcomes (PROs), making it difficult to incorporate PROs into person

Anxiety of microbially synthesized Fe3O4-SPIONs on embryonic/larval ontogeny in red tilapia (Oreochromis sp.).

Iron oxide nanoparticles, recognized for their superparamagnetic properties, are promising for future healthcare therapies. However, their extensive use in medicine and electronics contributes to their discharge into our environments, highlighting the need for further research on their cellular damage effects on aquatic organisms. While the detrimental properties of other compounds have been stated in the early-life stages of fish, the cytotoxic consequences of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) in these stages are still unexplored. Therefore, using the red tilapia (Oreochromi

The Spine Lengthens During Walking in Healthy Participants, with Age-Related Changes in Kinematic Parameters.

Background: While the importance of the upper and lower limbs in locomotion is well understood, the kinematics of the trunk during walking remains largely unexplored. Two decades ago, a casual observation was reported indicating spine lengthening in a small sample of mostly children during walking, but this observation was never replicated. Objectives: This study aims to verify the preliminary observation that spine lengthening occurs during walking and to explore changes in spine kinematics across three different age groups. Methods: A convenience sample of 45 healthy participants was divided

Sacrum1-pubic angle: a novel and alternative morphologic radiological parameter for assessing spinopelvic sagittal alignment in human adults.

OBJECTIVE: Spinopelvic sagittal balance ensures efficient posture and minimizes energy expenditure by aligning the spine, pelvis, and lower extremities. Deviations can cause clinical issues like back pain and functional limitations. Key radiographic parameters, including pelvic tilt (PT), pelvic incidence (PI), sacral slope (SS), and lumbar lordosis (LL), are essential for evaluating spinal pathologies and planning surgeries. Accurate PI measurement is challenging in certain conditions, necessitating alternative parameters. This study aimed to introduce a new, easily measurable parameter and e

What is the best strategy for C3 in open-door laminoplasty: laminectomy versus laminoplasty-a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Conventional open-door laminoplasty is commonly used to treat multilevel cervical disorders but often leads to complications such as loss of cervical lordosis, limited neck motion, and axial symptoms. These issues stem from the extensive disruption of musculature and structural alterations involved in conventional methods. To address these shortcomings, the modified open-door laminoplasty with C3 laminectomy technique has been developed as a modification of conventional open-door laminoplasty, with the aims to preserve the semispinalis cervicis muscle attached to the C2 spinous pro

Correlations between spinopelvic parameters and health-related quality of life in degenerative lumbar scoliosis patients before and after long -level fusion surgery.

BACKGROUND: For degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS), prior studies mainly focused on the preoperative relationship between spinopelvic parameters and health-related quality of life (HRQoL), lacking an exhaustive evaluation of the postoperative situation. Therefore, the postoperative parameters most closely bonded with clinical outcomes has not yet been well-defined in DLS patients. The objective of this study was to comprehensively assess the correlation between radiographic parameters and HRQoL before and after surgery, and to identified the most valuable spinopelvic parameters for postoperat

Effect of individual spinal muscle activities on upright posture using a human body finite element model.

The occurrence of diseases characterized by irregular spinal alignment, such as kyphosis, lordosis, scoliosis, and dropped head syndrome (DHS) is increasing, particularly among older adults. DHS is characterized by an excessive forward tilt of the head and neck, causing the head to droop. Although it is believed that muscle activity plays a role in both the onset and treatment of DHS, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. To elucidate the mechanism, we used a human body finite element model, which included the erector spinae muscle group, and a muscle controller with fixed legs for spinal

Impact of Adjacent Muscular Anatomic Preservation on Proximal Junctional Kyphosis and Failure.

BACKGROUND: Surgical intervention is a cornerstone of adult spinal deformity (ASD) management. However, there remain burdens from complications, including proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) and proximal junctional failure (PJF). Posterior anatomic preservation at the uppermost instrumented vertebra has emerged as an accessible approach to potentially reduce PJK/PJF risk. METHODS: We assembled an institutional cohort of patients with ASD evaluated between 2017 and 2022 who had spinal fusion performed with a modified subperiosteal dissection at and immediately below the uppermost instrumented v

Restitution of Cervical Lordosis Following Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion Using a Fixed Lordotic Angle Cage.

OBJECTIVES: Degenerative spine disease can result in loss of cervical lordosis. It may lead to spine misalignment, which can be evaluated using quantitative measurements of the Cobb and Harrison back (posterior tangent angle, PTA) angles. Our objective was to investigate the relationship between cervical curvature and the application of wedge-shaped allografts with a predetermined inclination angle in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgery in patients with cervical degenerative disease. Additionally, we aimed to evaluate the advantages of this technique in restoring cervical lo
