The present experiment was undertaken to evaluate the hypothesis that the effects of estrogens on feeding and sexual behaviors are organized separately within the brain. Thirty-three ovariectomized rats were implanted with bilateral guide cannulae aimed at either the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), medial preoptic area (MPOA), or posterior hypothalamus (PH). Subjects that received PVN implants were stimulated with either undiluted estradiol, a 3:1, or 10:1 mixture of cholesterol and estradiol. Animals in the other groups were treated with undiluted estradiol. All females were stimulated unilate

Two studies were conducted to compare the brain mechanisms for copulation with those controlling other sexual behaviors, such as the ultrasonic calls that help hamsters and other rodents attract potential mates. Specifically, male and female golden hamsters were castrated and hormone-primed prior to being observed for rates of ultrasound production and levels of sex-typical copulatory behavior (mounts, intromissions and ejaculations in males; lordosis in females). Such tests were conducted before and after subjects received sham operations or bilateral lesions of the preoptic area (POA), anter

16 alpha-Hydroxyesterone (16OHE1), a metabolite of estradiol (E2) and precursor of estriol (E3), binds to the estrogen receptor (ER) with low affinity (3% of E2), but is estrogenic in both in vitro and in vivo systems. This metabolite is able to bind in a non-dissociable manner to the ER. We examined these properties in vivo by assessing the temporal dynamics of estrogen metabolite action in the rat brain, using lordosis score (LS) to manual stimulation as a serial bioassay of estrogen effect. Male and female castrate Fisher rats were implanted with osmotic minipumps containing either vehicle,

We present a method of visualising spinal deformities in three dimensions using conventional radiographs and computer graphics. The shape of the spinal column can be determined from the anteroposterior and lateral radiographs and displayed in any projection. In patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, the fundamental lesion, an abnormal lordosis, can be demonstrated without the need for additional views. The method is applicable to other spinal deformities and may help to elucidate their three-dimensional shape.

From our patients who had idiopathic scoliosis, we identified a subset of eighteen in whom Harrington rods were used for fixation down to the fifth lumbar vertebra. In five of these patients, low-back pain, sciatica, and other neurological problems developed at two to thirty-two months after arthrodesis. These complications were caused by migration of the caudad hook into the spinal canal. The migration was probably caused by a combination of lumbosacral lordosis and mobility of the fifth lumbar vertebra (the most caudad mobile segment) on the segment below, resulting in weakening of the lamin

We have developed a simple technique for demonstrating the sagittal profile of each rotated level of a scoliotic spine and used it to determine the patterns of lordosis and kyphosis in each of six clinical types of idiopathic scoliosis. The currently accepted classification of scoliosis is inaccurate and a modification is proposed. The three main types of scoliosis were shown to have sagittal profiles distinctly different from each other and from normal. Single structural curves had short lordotic sections at their apices, limited above and below by kyphosis. Double curves showed longer lordot

Forty-six patients who had a neuromuscular spinal deformity were treated with arthrodesis and Luque segmental spinal instrumentation and were followed for an average of three years. Twenty-two patients had cerebral palsy and twenty-four had another neuromuscular disease. In thirty-nine patients, the arthrodesis was extended to the sacrum. Eleven patients who had severe scoliosis as well as pelvic obliquity and decompensation of the torso had a combined anterior and posterior arthrodesis; the other thirty-five patients had a one-stage posterior procedure. Preoperatively, the average scoliosis w

Prevention of and compensation for muscular weaknesses in postural disorders and physical disability are priority tasks of physiotherapy. A range of typical exercises are therefore being used to strengthen weakened groups of muscles, some of them traditionally already included in school sports. Most therapy concepts primarily focus on muscle strengthening, without taking into consideration that it is crucial to redress muscular imbalances by stretching contracted muscle groups as well. Based on this experience, the effectiveness of several specifically modified exercises was tested, derived fr

One hundred one referred adult patients (ages 20-63; mean, 36 years) with painful idiopathic scoliosis were evaluated. None had prior surgical treatment. Severity of pain was graded and localized over radiographic deformities in the coronal and sagittal planes. Radiographic changes in primary as well as full and fractional compensatory curves were studied. Degrees of scoliosis, percent correction on side bending, vertebral body rotation at curve apex, spinal balance, and lateral olisthesis in the coronal plane, degenerative disc disease, and other degenerative changes in all curves were measur

Thirty-four nonambulatory patients with progressive neuromuscular spinal deformity were surgically managed using a 1/4" U-shaped double rod construct with segmental instrumentation from T2 to the pelvis accompanied by posterior spinal fusion. Diagnoses included 17 patients with cerebral palsy, six with spinal bifida, and 11 with other diseases (spinal muscular atrophy, Friedreich's ataxia, polyneuropathy, nemaline myopathy, and polio). Twenty-three patients had single uncompensated thoracolumbar curves, and 11 had a double curve pattern. The mean preoperative major curve was 66 degrees (range,

Exogenously administered dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a potent inhibitor of sexual behavior in ovariectomized, estrogen-primed rats and endogenous DHT has been implicated as an inhibitor of sexual behavior in cycling rats. To determine the temporal relationship between DHT levels and the expression of sexual behavior, females were tested at midnight of each day of the 4-day estrous cycle for lordosis response to male mounts and subsequently bled. Plasma DHT levels were highest (177 +/- 10 pg/ml) at proestrus (P), when lordosis was fully expressed, fell to significantly lower levels (136 +/- 8,

The immunoreactive levels of oxytocin (OXY) were assessed by radioimmunoassay (RIA) and immunohistology after treatments with estradiol or estradiol and progesterone in ovariectomized rats that were mounted or not mounted by males. In micropunches from the medial preoptic area (MPOA) OXY immunoreactive levels increased significantly in estrogen-progesterone-treated receptive animals (mean lordosis quotient (LQ) = 82.9 +/- 4.4) that were mounted by males over levels in estrogen-treated unreceptive animals (mean LQ = 2.3 +/- 1.3). No other areas demonstrated significant changes in OXY levels acr

Hypothalamic lesions of serotoninergic afferents following bilateral stereotoxic injections of the neurotoxin 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine (5,7-DHT) into the region of the ventromedial hypothalamus enhanced the effects of hormonally induced lordosis responding in both male and female rats. However, similarities and differences in the enhanced responsiveness to ovarian hormones were observed between the sexes. Compared with sham-lesioned controls, lesioned males displayed elevated lordosis responding to estradiol (E) priming alone, as well as to priming with E followed by progresterone (P). On the o

The ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMH) has been implicated in the mediation of the hormonal control of female rodent sexual behavior. However, in hamsters, progesterone (P) has been found to have effects on sexual receptivity in other diencephalic and mesencephalic sites as well. Progesterone is thought to exert its behavioral effects by altering protein synthesis in CNS target neurons. We tested the effects of 30 gauge implants of the protein synthesis inhibitor anisomycin in the preoptic area (POA), VMH, and ventral mesencephalon (VMES) 30 minutes before 500 micrograms P SC, on t

Two half-sisters aged 14 and 18 years are described with a rigid spine syndrome as the cardinal clinical feature of an autosomal dominant neuromuscular disorder. Ten years previously, a diagnosis of multicore disease had been made from the clinical signs and muscle biopsy findings. Long term follow-up revealed a non-specific muscular dystrophy with axial predominance and a rigid spine in the younger girl; the older sister presented at the age of 18 with a rigid spine as the only myopathic sign. Computed tomography of the muscles showed severe involvement of the paraspinal musculature, in contr

A new internal skeletal fixation system (ISFS) for stabilizing thoracolumbar fractures and other spinal disorders was developed by Dick in Switzerland. The ISFS is a modification of the Magerl external skeletal fixation system of the spine. The Dick modification consists of a threaded rod connected by clamps to Schanz screws and is located in the vertebral pedicles on both sides of the spine. Due to a stable angle between the rod and Schanz screw, a one-point fixation above and below the diseased vertebra is sufficient. The ISFS provides a short fixation and promotes fusion. Control of lordosi

Symptomatic loss of lumbar lordosis is a disabling complication of scoliosis surgery. This so-called "flat-back syndrome" is characterized by an inability to stand erect and by upper back pain. Distraction instrumentation extending into the lower lumbar spine or sacrum is the most frequently identified etiologic factor responsible for loss of lordosis. The more distal the level of instrumentation, the severer the loss of lumbar lordosis. Other factors that may aggravate the loss of lordosis include thoracolumbar kyphosis, fixed thoracic kyphosis, hip flexion contractures, and pseudoarthrosis.

We suggest that lumbar degenerative kyphosis be included as one of the abnormal sagittal curvatures in which a kyphosis or a marked loss of lordosis is seen in the lumbar spine, caused by degenerative changes in middle-aged and elderly. One hundred and five consecutive patients were investigated, most of whom complained of low-back pain, often with a long history. They all walked in a forward bending posture, either all the time or only when exhausted. In roentgenograms, most cases showed a marked loss of the sacral inclination, as well as multiple disc narrowing and/or vertebral wedging in th

This paper describes experiments designed to investigate long-term behavioral consequences for offspring of changes in maternal behavior directed toward them as pups. Specifically, the hypothesis was considered that experimentally induced alterations in maternal behavior would result in general and wide-ranging effects on offspring development, including effects on later social and sexual behavior. The first experiment looked at the effects of changing pup odors on maternal responsiveness toward the pups, and showed that the application of perfume, particularly to the anogenital region, result

Male and female hamsters differ in the stimulus control of the ultrasounds they produce during courtship and mating. In particular, untreated males show greater increases in ultrasound rate after exposure to stimulus females than after contact with other males. Conversely, estrous females are more responsive to stimulus males than females. This sex difference reflects both organizational and activational effects of gonadal hormones. Thus, responses to early castration or treatment with testosterone propionate (TP), estradiol benzoate (EB), or dihydrotestosterone propionate suggest that the dev
