Twenty-one young male subjects without back complaints (group I) and 21 young males with back complaints (group II) were investigated in the easy standing position with the inclinometric method(1). One hundred consecutive patients with spinal deformity due to various diagnoses were treated by posterior spinal arthrodesis with instrumentation and multiple sublaminar wires. Both the Harrington and Luque rodding systems were used. A total of 1128 wire loops were passed. No patient developed paraparesis or paraplegia, but three had transient sensory disturbance. There were no cases of broken rods or wires. Forty-five of the patients had no postoperative support. This worked well for neuromuscular scolioses, but for idiopathic scoliosis there was a disturbing loss of correction in many cases.

A new system of operative fixation of thoracolumbar and lumbar spine fractures is presented: the 'fixateur interne' (F.I.). From a posterior approach long Schanz screws are inserted through the pedicles into the body of the two vertebrae just adjacent to the lesion and connected by th threaded F.I. rods. Analysis of cervical spine involvement is based on data from 29 cases of juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA), (8 systemic and 21 polyarticular forms). Follow-up is a least 5 years and exceeds 10 years in 17 cases. Among these 29 patients, 14 experienced cervical pain. One patient had Arnold neuralgia.
