A Study to Improve the Safety of Transplantation: Is Control Necessary for Detecting Human Adenovirus in Umbilical Cord Blood Units?

INTRODUCTION: Umbilical cord blood (UCB) units are an alternative valuable source for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cells (allo-HSCT). Patients undergoing allo-HSCT remain at high risk for complications and mortality due to viral infections such as human adenovirus (HAdV). HAdV, a double-stranded DNA virus, has been detected in the full-term placenta, raising concerns about vertical transmission. This study aims to examine the presence of HAdV in UCB samples to improve the safety of transplantation procedures.  Methods: A total of 98 UCB plasma samples were assayed to detect the presence of HA

Exploring the role of multi-pathogen infections in Alzheimer's disease: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a leading cause of dementia. Following the discovery of the amyloid's antimicrobial properties, research has focused on infectious agents as potential contributors. This study investigates the role of multi-pathogen infections in AD by analyzing serological and molecular microbiologic markers in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). METHODS: A unicentric case-control study was conducted in AD patients (n=44) and healthy controls (n=35) in a Spanish reference cognitive disorders unit. Serum and CSF samples were analyzed using chemiluminescence immunoassay

Simultaneous detection of p24 antigen and antibody outside the acute phase of HIV infection: A case report.

We report a man in his thirties living with advanced HIV presenting with Pneumocystis pneumonia, cytomegalovirus colitis and HIV retinopathy. Initial HIV screening was positive, and immunochromatographic testing demonstrated simultaneous p24 antigen and antibody bands, an exceptionally rare finding outside the acute seroconversion phase. Despite profound immunosuppression (CD4 3 cells/µL), initiation of antiretroviral therapy led to rapid disappearance of the p24 antigen, while antibody positivity persisted. This case illustrates how severe cellular immune deficiency can allow concurrent antig
