Ophthalmic involvement in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Forty patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) were examined for ocular abnormalities. Twenty of these patients died and the eyes were obtained for culture and histopathologic examination. These patients have multiple opportunistic infections and neoplasms as the result of a severe depression of cellular immunity. Fifty percent of all patients with AIDS and 75% of the autopsy group have ocular signs attributable to AIDS. Ocular findings were confined to four major categories: cytomegalovirus retinitis (10 patients), retinal cotton wool spots (11 patients), conjunctival Kaposi's

Possible viral interactions in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Viral interactions may occur whenever a host is infected simultaneously with two viruses. Persons at high risk for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) may provide a substrate for such interactions. These could include complementary immunosuppression, potentiation of infection by altered receptors or genetic complementation, phenotypic mixing, or genetic recombination. The possibility of such interactions should be considered in the pathogenesis of AIDS.

Thoracic manifestations of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome is characterized by the development of multiple recurrent opportunistic infections or unusual neoplasms in individuals with no prior history of immune suppression. This report summarizes the thoracic diseases encountered in such patients before after death and the role of diagnostic techniques currently used in the evaluation of thoracic disease in 15 patients with this syndrome. Efficacy of treatment was determined by correlation with postmortem findings in all patients. Pulmonary disease was present in all 15 patients and necessitated 23 transbronchial

Herpesvirus infections in the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

Herpesvirus infections were studied in persons with or at risk for the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The infections diagnosed were as follows: patients with AIDS, cytomegalovirus (CMV) in 34 of 34, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in 33 of 34, herpes simplex viruses (HSV) in eight of 34, and varicella zoster virus in four of 34; patients with chronic lymphadenopathy syndrome, CMV in eight of nine and EBV in nine of nine; in healthy homosexual men, CMV in five of 13 and EBV in seven of eight. Cytomegalovirus infections were frequently related to disease and death. Herpesvirus infections a

Infection and T lymphocyte subpopulations: changes associated with bacteremia and the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Patients with bacteremia, bacterial endocarditis, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) were prospectively studied using monoclonal antibody reagents to assess alterations in T-lymphocyte subpopulations. Patients with endocarditis had significantly higher ratios of T-helper (OKT4+) to T-suppressor-cytotoxic (OKT8+) cells than did patients with bacteremia alone. Staphylococcus aureus endocarditis patients had a mean ratio of 8.49 (range 4.73-22.36) while S aureus bacteremia had a mean ratio of 2.75 (range 2.15 to 3.21). Similar results were found with Staphylococcus epidermidis endocardi

[Difference in the behavior of T-lymphocyte populations in heroin and methadone addicts].

An assessment of T-lymphocyte populations was performed in two groups of drug addicts by the technique of monoclonal antibodies. Group I was composed of 11 asymptomatic heroin addicts, group II being in heroin withdrawal program from at least six months. Homosexual subjects, partners of patients with AIDS and patients with liver abnormalities or with recent infectious diseases were excluded from the present study. In all the examined subjects the antibody pattern to Toxoplasma gondii, Epstein-Barr virus, Cytomegalovirus was either negative or slightly positive as after old infections. All subj

A longitudinal study of a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome using T cell subset analysis.

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has recently been documented in patients in association with opportunistic infections, Kaposi's sarcoma, cytomegalovirus infections, and recreational drug use. AIDS is characterized by cutaneous energy, diminished peripheral lymphocyte responses to mitogens and antigens, and abnormal T cell subpopulations. These patients have been described as having decreased total T (T3+) cell numbers, virtual elimination of the T helper (T4+) cell population, and an increased percentage of the T suppressor-cytotoxic (T8+) cell population. T cell subset monitoring ha

Acquired immunodeficiency in an infant: possible transmission by means of blood products.

An infant who received multiple transfusions during the first few days of life for rhesus disease became ill with recurrent infections when 6 months old. Hepatitis, thrush, Candida dermatitis, otitis media, and disseminated Mycobacterium avium intracellulare infection occurred by 14 months of age. Immunological studies showed raised immunoglobulin levels, decreased mononuclear-cell responses to allogeneic cells and mitogen, and a decreased helper/suppressor cell ratio. It was determined that one of the blood donors, who was well at the time of blood donation, had died 17 months after with mult

Interleukin-2 enhances the depressed natural killer and cytomegalovirus-specific cytotoxic activities of lymphocytes from patients with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

The recently described acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is characterized by the occurrence of severe opportunistic infections and an aggressive form of Kaposi's sarcoma. A variety of profound defects in cell-mediated immunity have been reported in association with the AIDS, including deficiencies in natural killer (NK) cell activity and cytomegalovirus (CMV)-specific cytotoxicity. In the present study, the in vitro effects of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon beta (IFN Beta) on these abnormalities were examined to assess the potential use of these lymphokines in the immunotherapeut

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is an opportunistic infection and Kaposi's sarcoma results from secondary immune stimulation.

Two hypotheses are presented to explain the recent outbreak of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and Kaposi's sarcoma in certain risk groups, particularly homosexuals, and the absence of these diseases from other segments of the population. According to the first, AIDS is itself an opportunistic infection. It causes disease only in individuals who are already immunocompromised by hepatitis B, cytomegalovirus, parasites, or other immunosuppressive factors. This hypothesis predicts that evidence of previous contact with the AIDS agent would be found in healthy individuals who have had th

National case-control study of Kaposi's sarcoma and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in homosexual men: Part 2. Laboratory results.

The Centers for Disease Control conducted a case-control study to investigate an outbreak of Kaposi's sarcoma and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in homosexual men. The occurrence of these diseases was found to be associated with certain aspects of lifestyle, including a greater number of male sex partners per year, exposure to feces during sex, history of syphilis and non-B hepatitis, treatment for enteric parasites, and use of various illicit substances. Laboratory studies reflected both this lifestyle and the probable underlying cause of the Kaposi's sarcoma and P. carinii pneumonia--cellula

Pathogenesis of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

The pathogenesis of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is still unknown. However, it appears to develop in the milieu of prolonged immunodeficiency. Recently, the disease has reached almost epidemic proportions among homosexuals. Patients with AIDS present primarily with disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma and/or a host of opportunistic infections. A hypothesis is submitted incriminating induced tolerance leading to multiple viral infections and reinfections with cytomegalovirus and others, with or without additional immunosuppression by drugs and chemicals, as the cause of prolonged imm

The science base underlying research on acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

In order to define the clinical syndrome of AIDS and begin to deal with it effectively, scientists needed to understand how the immune system works. Fortunately, considerable knowledge was available: research in immunology over the last two decades had provided the technological advances and basic information about cell-mediated immunity that were necessary for identification of the syndrome. Without this knowledge base, immune suppression would not have been recognized as the common link among AIDS patients manifesting a variety of infections and unusual neoplasms. Similarly, research on infe
