AIM: Surgical repair of large congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) remains a challenge. Although many different procedures are described, none has become a 'gold standard'. This study aimed to evaluate long-term results of the single muscle flap repair to avoid using a prosthetic patch.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: After institutional review board approval (#15.92), we conducted a retrospective study including all neonates who underwent single transversus abdominis muscle flap repair as first-line treatment for large CDH between 1995 and 2023 in our institution. Survivors were assessed clinically

BACKGROUND: European cities are placing a larger emphasis on urban data consolidation and analysis for optimizing public transport in response to changing urban mobility dynamics. Despite the existing efforts, traffic data analysis often disregards vital situational context, including large-scale events, weather factors, traffic generation poles, social distancing norms, or traffic interdictions. Some of these sources of context data are still private, dispersed, or unavailable for the purpose of planning or managing urban mobility. Addressing the above observation, the Lisbon city Council has

OBJECTIVE: Surgery for aortic coarctation repair provides excellent hemodynamic results but may be complicated by musculoskeletal issues. The purpose of the study was to determine the midterm results of a muscle-sparing surgical approach to aortic coarctation repair, with special emphasis on the repair and on the musculoskeletal changes associated with a posterior thoracotomy.
METHODS: We included all children with aortic coarctation operated on with our minimally invasive approach between June 2002 and October 2004, with a follow-up of ≥4.5 years. Patients were assessed clinically and echoca

STUDY DESIGN: Report of four cases.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a series of pediatric patients with surgical scoliosis after chest wall resections due to Askin tumors.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Askin tumors are a rare type of chest wall solid tumors that can develop in children. Treatment involves chemotherapy and extensive surgical resection, including disarticulation of several ribs. This can cause thoracogenic scoliosis, with very scarce data found in the literature regarding its treatment and prognosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective descriptive series of four cases of scoliosis in p

BACKGROUND: Skin and soft tissue retraction secondary to burns of the trunk may induce severe and progressive thoracogenic spinal deformities in children. Its management is rarely described.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Our study reports a case of severe thoracic scoliosis in a 13-year-old adolescent, secondary to soft tissue retraction due to trunk burn in early childhood. The Cobb angle of the scoliosis was 100 degrees. The 3-stage surgical strategy consisted of scar excision and skin graft in the first stage, halo gravity traction in the second stage, and posterior correction and fusion of the spine

OBJECTIVESurgery for severe congenital defects, such as congenital diaphragmatic hernia, congenital heart defects, and tracheoesophageal disorders, are life-saving treatments for many infants. However, the incidence of scoliosis following thoracoabdominal surgery has been reported to range from 8% to 50%. Little is known about severe scoliosis that occurs after chest wall procedures in infants. The authors sought to determine the prevalence of thoracogenic scoliosis, disease severity, and need for scoliosis surgery in patients who underwent chest wall procedures in early childhood.METHODSA mul

INTRODUCTION: Thoracotomy as surgical approach for esophageal atresia treatment entails the risk of deformation of the rib cage and consequently secondary thoracogenic scoliosis. The aim of our study was to assess these thoracic wall anomalies on a large national cohort and search for factors influencing this morbidity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pediatric surgery departments from our national network were asked to send recent thoracic X-ray and operative reports for patients born between 2008 and 2010 with esophageal atresia. The X-rays were read in a double-blind manner to detect costal and ver

The purpose of this article is to present an unreported case of rib osteoblastoma associated with progressive adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and to discuss thoracogenic scoliosis as a potential cause of curve progression after tumor resection. An 11-year and 8-month-old girl with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis was referred with an incidental finding of an expansile lesion in the posterior left seventh rib. A computed tomography-guided needle biopsy established the diagnosis of benign osteoblastoma. Transarterial embolization was performed followed by wide resection. Sixteen months after surg

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective clinical study of scoliosis-associated airflow obstruction due to endothoracic vertebral hump.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and present anatomical features of patients with scoliosis who showed airflow obstruction caused by endothoracic vertebral hump.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: It is well known that severe scoliosis causes airflow restriction due to thoracic cage deformity. There have been few reports of clinical data and anatomical features on scoliosis associated with airflow obstruction due to endothoracic vertebral hump.

STUDY DESIGN: Review of available literature, authors' opinion.
OBJECTIVE: To describe complications associated with growth-sparing surgical treatment of early onset scoliosis (EOS).
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: EOS has many potential etiologies and is often associated with thoracic insufficiency syndrome. The growth of the spine, thorax, and lungs are interrelated, and severe EOS typically involves disturbance of the normal development of all 3. Severe EOS may be treated during growth with surgical techniques, intended to preserve growth while controlling deformity, the most common of which

INTRODUCTION: Combined congenital scoliosis and rib fusion associated with other chest deformities during infancy can lead to a progressive hypoplastic thorax that could be unable to support normal lung growth and respiratory function. Campbell introduced an expansion thoracoplasty technique in which fused ribs are separated and a vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib is used as a chest wall distraction device to enlarge the affected hemithorax. This technique benefits the underlying lung by improving the thoracic volume and the respiratory function.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Four patients
