INTRODUCTION: Scoliosis may be associated with long-term cardiac issues through developmental association or structural causes. There are limited data examining the correlation of different forms of scoliosis with cardiac issue beyond its association with congenital heart disease.
METHODS: Data were abstracted from the 2015-2021 October Mariner 157 with Control PearlDiver Data set. Patients older than 18 and younger than 65 years with idiopathic, neuromuscular, and congenital scoliosis were identified using International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 codes and separately matched 1:10 by

Early-onset scoliosis (EOS), defined as spinal deformity presenting before 10 years of age, is a complex condition with significant implications for thoracic growth, pulmonary development, and long-term cardiopulmonary function. Progressive deformity during early childhood can result in thoracic insufficiency syndrome and restrictive lung disease, making early recognition and appropriate intervention critical. The primary objective of EOS management is to control spinal deformity while preserving spinal and thoracic growth until skeletal maturity, thereby optimizing respiratory function and ov

Surgical site infections (SSIs) represent a major complication in pediatric orthopedics and occur predominantly after spinal surgery for scoliosis. Diagnosis relies on clinical signs, inflammatory biomarkers, and deep intraoperative microbiological sampling obtained prior to antibiotic administration whenever possible. In cases of negative cultures, particularly after prior antibiotic exposure, molecular techniques such as 16S rRNA polymerase chain reaction may improve pathogen identification. The microbiological profile varies according to the underlying condition. Idiopathic scoliosis is mai

Increasing evidence suggests that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) influence the pathogenesis and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The authors of the present study previously reported that abnormal upregulation of lncRNA DQ786243 (lncDQ) was associated with poor prognoses for patients with HCC. However, the elucidation of underlying mechanisms which influenced these results was not completed. Thus, the current study aimed to characterize the mechanisms and functions of lncDQ that facilitate its promotion of HCC progression. lncDQ, miR‑15b‑5p and Wnt3A expression levels were characte

BACKGROUND: Accurate measurement of ankle joint dorsiflexion is clinically important as a restriction has been linked to many foot and ankle pathologies, as well as increased ulcer risk and delayed ulcer healing in people with diabetes. Use of the reliable weight bearing (WB) Lunge test is limited as normal and restricted ranges for WB ankle joint dorsiflexion are not identified. Additionally the extent of WB dorsiflexion restriction that results in clinically adverse outcomes is unclear. Therefore the aim of this investigation is to validate a proposed weight bearing equinus value (dorsiflexi

Background/Objectives: Postoperative ileus, the temporary cessation of gastrointestinal motility leading to accumulation of fluid and gas in the bowel, is a common complication following posterior spine fusion (PSF) in patients with neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS). Abdominal radiographs (KUBs) are often ordered to differentiate between ileus and mechanical obstruction but expose patients to radiation, add cost, and may lead to unnecessary work up. The aim of this study was to determine how often KUBs led to a change in treatment after PSF in patients with NMS. Methods: A retrospective review was

Study DesignRetrospective Cohort Study.ObjectivesFlexibility radiographs such as traction or bending radiographs are essential in preoperative imaging to assess for curve flexibility and to estimate the amount of operative correction in order to determine the type and length of instrumentation in growth-accompanying scoliosis treatment. Both traction and bending radiographs are controversially discussed in the literature. The predictability of flexibility radiographs of postoperative main curve correction specifically in patients treated with magnetically controlled growing rods (MCGR) has not

PURPOSE: The etiology of early-onset scoliosis (EOS) has been shown to significantly influence baseline parent-reported health-related quality of life (HrQOL). In combining these etiology groups, we obligatorily lump together many disparate diagnoses, particularly true in the neuromuscular (NM) cohort. We sought to evaluate the influence of underlying neuromuscular diagnosis on the HrQOL at 5 years following surgery for EOS.
METHODS: A retrospective review of a multi-center EOS database was performed. Children treated with primary distraction-based, growth-friendly instrumentation (GFI) for E

PURPOSE: Determine if Sacral Alar-Iliac (SAI) screw diameter is associated with pelvic fixation failure in pediatric patients with neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS) treated with posterior spinal fusion (PSF).
METHODS: NMS patients from a single institution who underwent PSF with bilateral SAI screw fixation from 2010 to 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical parameters, SAI screw sizes, and radiographic outcomes were analyzed. Patients with greater or less than two SAI screws, > 21 years old, or with < 2 years of radiographic follow-up were excluded.
RESULTS: 142 patients had 284 SAI screw

BACKGROUND: This study examines the long-term effectiveness and safety of the vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib (VEPTR) device, developed in 1989 to treat early-onset scoliosis (EOS) and thoracic insufficiency syndrome (TIS). Specifically, it assesses VEPTR outcomes over 20 years in a single center, focusing on spine deformity correction, pulmonary function, weight percentile changes, and complication rates.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 36 patients from the EOS clinic who underwent VEPTR implantation without prior spine surgery, with at least 2 years of follow-

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, chart review.
PURPOSE: Improvements in operative time, blood loss, and length of stay (LOS) when using a dual surgeon approach for the treatment of scoliosis have been suggested in the literature; however, the external validity of these findings has been debated. In this study, we examined the impact of transitioning from a single surgeon to a dual surgeon approach in the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS) across non-contemporary periods at a single institution.
METHODS: Through a retrospective chart review we ide

BACKGROUND: Management of neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS) is challenging, with both surgical and conservative options involving risks. This study aimed to evaluate multimorbidity in patients with NMS and how this influences multidisciplinary team (MDT) decisions as well as postoperative outcomes.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of patients referred for assessment by the scoliosis MDT in the 8-year period between 2013 and 2021 from a single tertiary centre.
RESULTS: 84 patients with NMS were referred for assessment to the MDT. The most common underlying cause of NMS was cerebral palsy (51

PURPOSE: Pelvic fixation in pediatric neuromuscular patients with scoliosis is performed when significant pelvic obliquity is present. Instrumentation to the pelvis can be technically demanding and challenging, often associated with a high complication rate, prolonged operative time, increased radiation exposure, and increased intraoperative bleeding. The high complexity of the pelvic instrumentation technique, particularly in severe cases, led us to develop computed tomography (CT)-based 3D in a series of 53 consecutive neuromuscular patients. This analysis aimed to improve the understanding

PURPOSE: Scoliosis in neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS) is a spinal deformity often treated with posterior spinal fusions (PSF). There is a relatively high risk to develop surgical site infection (SSI) after PSF in NMS compared to adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients. The purpose of this retrospective cohort study was to determine perioperative risk factors for NMS patients undergoing PSF.
METHODS: The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) Pediatric database was queried for patients who underwent PSF for NMS and/or cerebral palsy from 2015 to

The Crankshaft Phenomenon (CSP) is a significant complication that can occur after posterior spinal fusion, particularly in growing patients with scoliosis. It results from continued anterior spinal growth while the posterior column remains fused, leading to progressive spinal deformities such as loss of correction, increased vertebral rotation, and rib prominence. This phenomenon has been predominantly observed in pediatric patients with idiopathic, congenital, and neuromuscular scoliosis. Although clinical symptoms may be subtle, radiographic signs are crucial for diagnosis but can be challe

INTRODUCTION: No data describe what patients search for related to scoliosis. We aimed to quantify the Google search volume for scoliosis, identify the most sought-after information, and evaluate the associated online resources.
METHODS: Search volume and 'People Also Ask' (PAA) questions were documented for the following terms: scoliosis, idiopathic scoliosis, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, congenital scoliosis, and neuromuscular scoliosis. PAA questions were categorised based on intent and websites were categorised on source. Quality and readability of the sources were determined using th

Surgical correction of neuromuscular scoliosis is a challenging problem facing spine surgeons. Many patients require long constructs and pelvic fixation to obtain adequate curve correction and pelvic obliquity correction. The aim of this technical note is to describe a technique for sequential pelvic obliquity and scoliotic curve correction in patients with neuromuscular scoliosis using four rods in upper thoracic to pelvis posterior spinal fusion, without the need for intraoperative traction. We present 5 cases of neuromuscular scoliosis that underwent upper thoracic to pelvis posterior spina
