Sling suspension therapy is an effective treatment method of juvenile spinal osteochondrosis in adolescent girls.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile spinal osteochondrosis (JSO) affects vertebral endplates and may cause intervertebral discs alterations. The condition is typically related to pain, and weakness and shortening of trunk muscles. Sling suspension therapy (SST) has been shown to reduce lumbar pain effectively. It is, however, unclear whether SST is superior to other treatment methods in reducing pain, correcting posture, and activating trunk stabilizers in JSO. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we intended to compare the effectiveness of two different exercise modalities; Sling Suspension Therapy and Gym Ball Exerc

Selection of the optimal distal fusion level for Scheuermann kyphosis with different curve patterns: when can we stop above the sagittal stable vertebra?

PURPOSE: To investigate the optimal lowest instrumented vertebra (LIV) in the treatment of Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) with different curve patterns. METHODS: Fifty-two SK patients who underwent posterior surgery between January 2010 and December 2017 with a minimum follow-up of 2 years were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into two groups based on the curve pattern: the Scheuermann thoracic kyphosis (STK group) or Scheuermann thoracolumbar kyphosis (STLK group). Based on the relationship between the sagittal stable vertebra (SSV) and LIV, both groups were further divided into th

Osteochondrosis and other lesions in all intervertebral, articular process and rib joints from occiput to sacrum in pigs with poor back conformation, and relationship to juvenile kyphosis.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is used to evaluate body composition and limb osteochondrosis in selection of breeding boars. Pigs also develop heritably predisposed abnormal curvature of the spine including juvenile kyphosis. It has been suggested that osteochondrosis-like changes cause vertebral wedging and kyphosis, both of which are identifiable by CT. The aim of the current study was to examine the spine from occiput to sacrum to map changes and evaluate relationships, especially whether osteochondrosis caused juvenile kyphosis, in which case CT could be used in selection against it.

The Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life questionnaire: reliability and validity of the Persian version in adolescents with spinal deformities.

PURPOSE: To assess the reliability and validity of the Persian version of the Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (P-ISYQOL) questionnaire. METHODS: Forward/backward translations and cultural adaption processes of the ISYQOL questionnaire into Persian were conducted by an expert committee. We recruited 178 adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK) and 103 age-matched adolescents with no spinal deformity. Reliability was assessed by evaluating internal consistency and test-retest reliability using Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC).

[Scheuermann's disease].

Scheuermann's disease represents the second most common deformity of the growing spine after the various forms of scoliosis. In cases of early diagnosis and mild kyphotic deformity conservative treatment with a brace and physiotherapy shows very good results; however, in cases of neurologic deficits, curve progression despite conservative treatment and increasing pain symptoms with a Stagnara angle of more than 70-75°, surgical treatment is meaningful. The surgical strategy can include posterior spondylodesis with prior anterior release or posterior instrumentation with posterior column osteot

Combined surgical correction of pectus carinatum and juvenile kyphosis.

Pectus carinatum may rarely be associated with kyphosis. However, the correlation between both conditions is not well reported. Therefore, there are no reports for combined correction of both deformities in the same patient. Moreover, studies estimating the kyphosis prevalence in patients with pectus carinatum are lacking. To our knowledge, this is the first paper to present such a case. We report an 18-year-old boy with both pectus carinatum and kyphosis that were surgically corrected in a combined procedure. The indication of surgery is cosmetic, and the postoperative recovery included pneum

In Scheuermann's kyphosis, a proximal UIV and postop kyphosis value close to patients' PI decreases the risk of PJK.

PURPOSE: Prevalence of proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) in Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK) varies between 24 and 40%. Multiple factors have been implicated, including kyphosis overcorrection, failure to include proximal end vertebra, and implant choice. This study aimed to determine the goal correction parameters based upon patients' pelvic incidence, and UIV to decrease PJK in Scheuermann's kyphosis. METHODS: X-ray and chart review of SK patients operated with all pedicle screw (PS), hybrid fixation (HF), and anterior/posterior fusions with hybrid fixation (AP). T1/T2 were grouped together as

Issues With Big Data: Variability in Reported Demographics and Complications Associated With Posterior Spinal Fusion in Pediatric Patients.

BACKGROUND: Clinical and administrative registries provide large volumes of data that can be used for clinical research. However, there are several limitations relating to the quality, consistency, and generalizability of big data. In this study, we aim to compare reported demographics and certain outcomes in patients undergoing posterior spinal fusion (PSF) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), neuromuscular scoliosis (NS), and Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) between 3 commonly utilized databases in pediatric orthopaedic research. METHODS: We used International Classification of Diseases, Nin

Assessment of Quality of Life for Scheuermann's Kyphosis Patients with Cobb's Angle 50°-65° Treated Conservatively or Surgically in North Jordan: A Prospective Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Scheuermann's disease is the most common cause of hyperkyphosis of the thoracic spine during the adolescence period. It causes neck and lower back pain, restriction of lung expansion, traction of the spinal cord, increased vulnerability to vertebral fracture, and a hump. Patients with curves < 60° are treated conservatively, while surgery is used for patients with curves > 60°. The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to assess the quality of life and functional changes in conservatively or surgically treated Scheuermann's disease patients with a curve size of 50°-65° in no

Risk of distal junctional kyphosis in scheuermann's kyphosis is decreased by selecting the LIV as two vertebrae distal to the first lordotic disc.

PURPOSE: To determine whether (1) distal junctional kyphosis (DJK) is decreased by selecting the stable sagittal vertebra (SSV), versus the vertebra below the 1st lordotic disc (1stLD), as the lowest instrumented level (LIV); (2) DJK is decreased if the LIV is two versus one vertebrae distal to the 1stLD. METHODS: A multi-institution prospective database was queried for SK patients who underwent posterior-only instrumentation and fusion with > 2 year follow-up. DJK was defined as > 10° change in the distal junctional angle postoperative from the preoperative junctional angle. Statistical anal

The Hereditary Nature of Adolescent Spinal Deformities: A Study of Over 600,000 Adolescents.

STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. OBJECTIVE: We designed this study to investigate the risk for spinal deformity among individuals whose parents had a spinal deformity. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) are common adolescent spinal deformities (ASD) with a significant impact on public health. Timely treatment with bracing is effective in halting or slowing the progression of these deformities. However, screening healthy adolescents for spinal deformities remains debatable. While the leading medical organizations endorse contradicto

Defining antigen targets to dissect vaccinia virus and monkeypox virus-specific T cell responses in humans.

The monkeypox virus (MPXV) outbreak confirmed in May 2022 in non-endemic countries is raising concern about the pandemic potential of novel orthopoxviruses. Little is known regarding MPXV immunity in the context of MPXV infection or vaccination with vaccinia-based vaccines (VACV). As with vaccinia, T cells are likely to provide an important contribution to overall immunity to MPXV. Here, we leveraged the epitope information available in the Immune Epitope Database (IEDB) on VACV to predict potential MPXV targets recognized by CD4+ and CD8+ T cell responses. We found a high degree of conservati

Animal Models of Enterovirus D68 Infection and Disease.

Human enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is a globally reemerging respiratory pathogen that is associated with the development of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) in children. Currently, there are no approved vaccines or treatments for EV-D68 infection, and there is a paucity of data related to the virus and host-specific factors that predict disease severity and progression to the neurologic syndrome. EV-D68 infection of various animal models has served as an important platform for characterization and comparison of disease pathogenesis between historic and contemporary isolates. Still, there are significa

Alleles of a wall-associated kinase gene account for three of the major northern corn leaf blight resistance loci in maize.

Northern corn leaf blight, caused by the fungal pathogen Setosphaeria turcica (anamorph Exserohilum turcicum), is one of the most devastating foliar diseases of maize (Zea mays). Four genes Ht1, Ht2, Ht3 and Htn1 represent the major sources of genetic resistance against the hemibiotrophic fungus S. turcica. Differential maize lines containing these genes also form the basis to classify S. turcica races. Here, we show that Ht2 and Ht3 are identical and allelic to the previously cloned Htn1 gene. Using a map-based cloning approach and Targeting Induced Local Lesions in Genomes (TILLING), we demo

Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps is associated with impaired TMEM16A-mediated epithelial chloride secretion.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is one of the most common chronic disorders with limited therapeutic options. However, the pathogenesis of CRSwNP remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the role of abnormalities in nasal epithelial ion transport in primary epithelial cultures and patients with CRSwNP. METHODS: We studied epithelial ion transport and transcript levels of the Cl- channels cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator and transmembrane protein 16A (TMEM16A) in human primary nasal epithelial cultures of patients with CRSwN

Negligible impact of SARS-CoV-2 variants on CD4 + and CD8 + T cell reactivity in COVID-19 exposed donors and vaccinees.

The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants highlighted the need to better understand adaptive immune responses to this virus. It is important to address whether also CD4+ and CD8+ T cell responses are affected, because of the role they play in disease resolution and modulation of COVID-19 disease severity. Here we performed a comprehensive analysis of SARS-CoV-2-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cell responses from COVID-19 convalescent subjects recognizing the ancestral strain, compared to variant lineages B.1.1.7, B.1.351, P.1, and CAL.20C as well as recipients of the Moderna (mRNA-1273) or Pfizer/BioNTech

SARS-CoV-2 infection of the oral cavity and saliva.

Despite signs of infection-including taste loss, dry mouth and mucosal lesions such as ulcerations, enanthema and macules-the involvement of the oral cavity in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is poorly understood. To address this, we generated and analyzed two single-cell RNA sequencing datasets of the human minor salivary glands and gingiva (9 samples, 13,824 cells), identifying 50 cell clusters. Using integrated cell normalization and annotation, we classified 34 unique cell subpopulations between glands and gingiva. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) viral entr

Dystrophin Deficiency Causes Progressive Depletion of Cardiovascular Progenitor Cells in the Heart.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a devastating condition shortening the lifespan of young men. DMD patients suffer from age-related dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) that leads to heart failure. Several molecular mechanisms leading to cardiomyocyte death in DMD have been described. However, the pathological progression of DMD-associated DCM remains unclear. In skeletal muscle, a dramatic decrease in stem cells, so-called satellite cells, has been shown in DMD patients. Whether similar dysfunction occurs with cardiac muscle cardiovascular progenitor cells (CVPCs) in DMD remains to be explored. W
