PURPOSE: This study sought to investigate associations between upper instrumented vertebra (UIV) location and the risk of proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) at 2 years following posterior spinal fusion (PSF) for Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK).
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, SK patients who underwent PSF and reached 2 years postop were identified in a multicenter international registry, excluding those with anterior release, prior spine surgery, neuromuscular comorbidity, post-traumatic kyphosis, or kyphosis apex below T11-T12. Location of UIV as well as the number of levels between

INTRODUCTION: A novel classification scheme for endplate lesions, based on T2-weighted images from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, has been recently introduced and validated. The scheme categorizes intervertebral spaces as "normal," "wavy/irregular," "notched," and "Schmorl's node." These lesions have been associated with spinal pathologies, including disc degeneration and low back pain. The exploitation of an automatic tool for the detection of the lesions would facilitate clinical practice by reducing the workload and the diagnosis time. The present work exploits a deep learning appli

OBJECTIVE: The proper selection of the lower instrumented vertebra (LIV) remains controversial in the surgical treatment of Scheuermann's disease and there is a paucity of studies investigating the clinical outcomes of fusion surgery when selecting the vertebra one level proximal to the sagittal stable vertebra (SSV-1) as LIV. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether SSV-1 could be a valid LIV for Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) patients with different curve patterns.
METHODS: This was a prospective study on consecutive SK patients treated with posterior surgery between January 2018 and

BACKGROUND: In the literature, there are several papers on Scheuermann's kyphosis. It is a structural deformity of the spine that is characterized by anterior wedging of 5° or more of 3 adjacent thoracic vertebral bodies with kyphosis measuring greater than 45° between T5 and T12. Bracing treatment is able to obtain, during skeletal growth, remodeling of the deformed vertebrae.
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of conservative treatment in Scheuermann's kyphosis at a minimum follow-up of 10 years.
DESIGN: This is an observational controlled cohort study nested in a

Scheuermann's disease is a rigid progressive kyphosis occurring in late childhood to adolescence. It is the most common cause of sagittal imbalance and angular progressive kyphosis in adolescents associated with back pain. The exact etiology of the disease is unclear, but it is characterized by defective growth of the end plate that may result from excessive mechanical stress on a weakened end plate during spinal growth. Several other theories have been proposed, and it is thought to be a multifactorial disease occurring as a result of the interplay of multiple factors. The radiographic featur

OBJECTIVE: To determine optimal proximal fusion levels for instrumented spinal fusion for Scheuermann kyphosis.
METHODS: We reviewed 86 patients (33 women) who underwent corrective instrumented spinal fusion for Scheuermann kyphosis. All patients had long-cassette upright lateral radiographs taken preoperatively, postoperatively, and at 2 years and the last follow-up. Demographic, radiographic, and surgical parameters were compared between patients with and without PJK.
RESULTS: PJK occurred in 28 patients (32%). The mean maximum Cobb angle was 85.8° ± 11.7° preoperatively, 54.8° ± 14.2° pos

BACKGROUND: Back pain is currently one of the most urgent problems within pain syndromes. Inadequate treatment of nonspecific back pain, even with a relatively favorable prognosis, leads to its chronicity and decreases the patient's quality of life. The most common cause of vertebrogenic dorsopathies is spinal osteochondrosis. The etiopathogenetic basis of spinal osteochondrosis is degenerative and dystrophic changes in the intervertebral discs involving adjacent vertebrae, joints, and ligaments. Considering the experience of many years of using chondroprotective therapy in clinical practice,

Scheuermann's disease, also referred to as Scheuermann's kyphosis, is the second most frequent spine deformity occurring in humans after adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), both with an unclear etiology. Recent genetic studies in zebrafish unraveled new mechanisms linked to AIS, highlighting the role of the Reissner fiber, an acellular polymer bathing in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in close proximity with ciliated cells and mechanosensory neurons lining the central canal of the spinal cord (CSF-cNs). However, while the Reissner fiber and ciliary beating have been linked to AIS-like phenot

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Scheuermann's disease is characterized by kyphosis and frequently mild back pain. As the level of kyphosis may progress over time, also the level of pain may increase. We evaluated the prevalence of Scheuermann's disease, and their pain, in Swedish elderly men.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) Study Sweden (n = 3,014) is a population-based prospective observational study of community-living men aged 69-81 years. At baseline, participants answered a questionnaire including history of neck/back pain during the preceding year and characterist

Lumbosacral osteochondrosis has been previously described in large breed dogs with variable clinical signs. Its CT features are a contour defect at the dorsal aspect of either vertebral endplate, commonly with an adjacent fragment. Descriptions of this condition have not been previously published in an increasingly popular breed, French Bulldogs. Aims of this retrospective, descriptive, single center study were to evaluate CT lumbosacral abnormalities and the frequency of lumbosacral endplate contour defect in a large sample of French Bulldogs. The presence and location of lumbosacral endplate

STUDY DESIGN: Multicenter retrospective review.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to address major postoperative complications associated with Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) when compared with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) in a large population matched by demographic characteristics, levels fused and operative technique.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Prior studies have found that SK patients are 3.86 times more likely to experience major postoperative complications than in AIS. Historically, however, these studies have often had populations that were significantly different between the two groups

BACKGROUND: Juvenile spinal osteochondrosis (JSO) affects vertebral endplates and may cause intervertebral discs alterations. The condition is typically related to pain, and weakness and shortening of trunk muscles. Sling suspension therapy (SST) has been shown to reduce lumbar pain effectively. It is, however, unclear whether SST is superior to other treatment methods in reducing pain, correcting posture, and activating trunk stabilizers in JSO.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we intended to compare the effectiveness of two different exercise modalities; Sling Suspension Therapy and Gym Ball Exerc

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is used to evaluate body composition and limb osteochondrosis in selection of breeding boars. Pigs also develop heritably predisposed abnormal curvature of the spine including juvenile kyphosis. It has been suggested that osteochondrosis-like changes cause vertebral wedging and kyphosis, both of which are identifiable by CT. The aim of the current study was to examine the spine from occiput to sacrum to map changes and evaluate relationships, especially whether osteochondrosis caused juvenile kyphosis, in which case CT could be used in selection against it.

Scheuermann's disease represents the second most common deformity of the growing spine after the various forms of scoliosis. In cases of early diagnosis and mild kyphotic deformity conservative treatment with a brace and physiotherapy shows very good results; however, in cases of neurologic deficits, curve progression despite conservative treatment and increasing pain symptoms with a Stagnara angle of more than 70-75°, surgical treatment is meaningful. The surgical strategy can include posterior spondylodesis with prior anterior release or posterior instrumentation with posterior column osteot
