Pectus carinatum may rarely be associated with kyphosis. However, the correlation between both conditions is not well reported. Therefore, there are no reports for combined correction of both deformities in the same patient. Moreover, studies estimating the kyphosis prevalence in patients with pectus carinatum are lacking. To our knowledge, this is the first paper to present such a case. We report an 18-year-old boy with both pectus carinatum and kyphosis that were surgically corrected in a combined procedure. The indication of surgery is cosmetic, and the postoperative recovery included pneum

PURPOSE: Prevalence of proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) in Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK) varies between 24 and 40%. Multiple factors have been implicated, including kyphosis overcorrection, failure to include proximal end vertebra, and implant choice. This study aimed to determine the goal correction parameters based upon patients' pelvic incidence, and UIV to decrease PJK in Scheuermann's kyphosis.
METHODS: X-ray and chart review of SK patients operated with all pedicle screw (PS), hybrid fixation (HF), and anterior/posterior fusions with hybrid fixation (AP). T1/T2 were grouped together as

BACKGROUND: Clinical and administrative registries provide large volumes of data that can be used for clinical research. However, there are several limitations relating to the quality, consistency, and generalizability of big data. In this study, we aim to compare reported demographics and certain outcomes in patients undergoing posterior spinal fusion (PSF) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), neuromuscular scoliosis (NS), and Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) between 3 commonly utilized databases in pediatric orthopaedic research.
METHODS: We used International Classification of Diseases, Nin

BACKGROUND: Scheuermann's disease is the most common cause of hyperkyphosis of the thoracic spine during the adolescence period. It causes neck and lower back pain, restriction of lung expansion, traction of the spinal cord, increased vulnerability to vertebral fracture, and a hump. Patients with curves < 60° are treated conservatively, while surgery is used for patients with curves > 60°. The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to assess the quality of life and functional changes in conservatively or surgically treated Scheuermann's disease patients with a curve size of 50°-65° in no

PURPOSE: The pathogenic mechanism of the hip-spine syndrome is still poorly elucidated. Some studies have reported a reduction in low back pain after total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, the biomechanical mechanisms of THA acting on the lumbar spine are not well understood. The aim of the study is to evaluate the influence of THA on (1) the lumbar lordosis and the lumbar flexibility and (2) the lumbar intervertebral disc height.
METHODS: A total of 197 primary THA patients were prospectively enrolled. Pre- and post-operative biplanar stereoradiography was performed in standing and sitting p

PURPOSE: To determine whether (1) distal junctional kyphosis (DJK) is decreased by selecting the stable sagittal vertebra (SSV), versus the vertebra below the 1st lordotic disc (1stLD), as the lowest instrumented level (LIV); (2) DJK is decreased if the LIV is two versus one vertebrae distal to the 1stLD.
METHODS: A multi-institution prospective database was queried for SK patients who underwent posterior-only instrumentation and fusion with > 2 year follow-up. DJK was defined as > 10° change in the distal junctional angle postoperative from the preoperative junctional angle. Statistical anal

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of the Milwaukee brace and thoracolumbosacral orthosis (TLSO) on head to pelvis sagittal alignment in adolescents with Scheuermann's kyphosis (SK). A total of 52 adolescents with SK who were under brace treatment were studied. They underwent biplanar radiography of the head to pelvis (EOS Imaging, Paris, France) before and 6 months after the beginning of bracing. We measured T1 slope, neck tilt (NT), cervical sagittal vertical axis (cSVA), thoracic inlet angle (TIA), C0-C2 lordosis, C2-C7 lordosis, thoracic kyphosis (TK), lumbar lordosis (LL),

Lower back pain is one of the most common causes of a reduced quality of life. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the best suited imaging technique to detect causes of that pain. We retrospectively evaluated the MRIs of the lumbar spine for 200 patients in order to describe the distribution of signs of degeneration with regard to age, sex, and position of the disc affected. The number of spinal segments affected by degeneration increased with age, as did the number of signs of degeneration per segment. In patients aged between 21 and 30, 38.8% of discs were affected, while for patients aged b

AIM: To determine the rate of postoperative complications following surgery for Scheuermann?s kyphosis (SK) and ascertain whether restoration to an ideal Roussouly spine type reduced the incidence of postoperative proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively screened all patients undergoing SK surgery at our institution (2010?2017) and excluded patients with less than two years of follow-up. Postoperative complications were identified as early or late and minor or major. Successful restoration of Roussouly spine type was assessed and patients were classified as

STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study.
OBJECTIVE: We designed this study to investigate the risk for spinal deformity among individuals whose parents had a spinal deformity.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and Scheuermann kyphosis (SK) are common adolescent spinal deformities (ASD) with a significant impact on public health. Timely treatment with bracing is effective in halting or slowing the progression of these deformities. However, screening healthy adolescents for spinal deformities remains debatable. While the leading medical organizations endorse contradicto

BACKGROUND This retrospective study aimed to identify the factors associated with successful surgical correction of thoracic kyphosis (TK) in 43 patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) with Lenke type 1 curvature, in which the major curve with the largest Cobb angle was mainly in the thoracic region. MATERIAL AND METHODS We collected data from patients with Lenke 1 AIS. The following parameters were measured: Cobb angle, side-bending Cobb angle, cervical lordosis (CL), TK, lumbar lordosis (LL), pelvic incidence (PI), sacral slope (SS), pelvic tilt (PT), the sagittal vertical axis (

OBJECTIVES: Scheuermann's kyphosis can cause severe back pain and cosmetic disorders to patients. Previous studies on surgical procedure selection for correction of Scheuermann's kyphosis have drawn controversial conclusions. Here, a meta-analysis was performed to figure out a better way between anterior-posterior (AP) combined procedures and posterior-only (PO) procedures.
METHODS: We searched PubMed database and Ovid database, as well as Cochrane Library (between January 2009 and December 2020, around recent ten years), for studies reporting Scheuermann's kyphosis correction in an anterior

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heterogeneous connective tissue disorder characterized by increased bone fragility and a series of extraskeletal manifestations. Approximately 90 % of OI cases are caused by type I collagen variants encoded by the collagen type I alpha 1 (COL1A1) or type I alpha 2 (COL1A2) gene. Lumbar Scheuermann's disease is an atypical type of Scheuermann's disease accompanied by Schmorl's nodes and irregular endplates but without pronounced kyphosis. Although the etiology of Scheuermann's disease is unclear, genetic and environmental factors are likely.
