INTRODUCTION: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic had a direct impediment to the provision of critical health services worldwide, and one of the most affected areas was routine immunisation programmes. This caused a significant drop in child immunisation rates, especially in the early stages of the pandemic. This research aimed to investigate the socio-demographic predictors of the continued persistence of routine immunisation services in Rwanda during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The survey was done between January 3 and March 31, 2022 among mothers living in five districts in

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected nursing home residents (NHRs), a vulnerable group with high rates of illness and death. While vaccination is essential for reducing infections and severe outcomes in the short term, it is important to understand how long antibody levels and neutralizing activity last. This understanding will help us create effective public health strategies for the long term. According to current CDC guidelines, individuals over 65 should receive a booster dose six months after their previous vaccination.
METHODS: This observational retrospective cohort s

INTRODUCTION: HIV testing is at the cornerstone for interventions aimed at controlling the number of new HIV infections in Sub-Saharan Africa. The current HIV RDTs in use are not able to identify acute HIV infection.
METHODS: We collaborated with 10 health centers in Uganda, offering HIV voluntary counselling and testing services to obtain 'left-over' EDTA blood samples after HIV RDT. We investigated for HIV RNA using the GeneXpert HIV-1 Viral Load assay among individuals who had non-reactive Determine (HIV negative) or an inconclusive test result (Indeterminate). We used a formula from Brook

BACKGROUND: Existing tools for virus variant identification can pinpoint the most abundant virus variant in a sequencing sample. However, patients can be infected by more than one variant of the same virus species or strain, for example by multiple variants of SARS-CoV-2. This leads to the more complicated problem of virus variant quantification from samples containing virus mixtures. RESULTS: We report on improvements of Orthanq, our generic tool for haplotype quantification, and show how it can be applied to perform uncertainty aware quantification of virus variants. We evaluate this ability

Histoplasmosis is a potentially life-threatening opportunistic fungal infection in patients with advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), particularly in endemic regions such as the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys. Despite advances in antiretroviral therapy, delayed diagnosis, lack of linkage to care, and treatment nonadherence continue to contribute to severe opportunistic infections in individuals with untreated HIV. We present the case of a 43-year-old woman with a 23-year-long history of untreated HIV infection who presented with fever, weight loss, diarrhea, and malaise. Laboratory

BACKGROUND: Randomized trials of long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy (ART) in persons with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who face challenges with adherence to oral medication are lacking.
METHODS: We conducted an open-label, randomized trial involving persons with HIV who had inadequate adherence to ART (a persistent HIV-1 RNA level of >200 copies per milliliter or loss to follow-up). Participants received up to 24 weeks of adherence support, conditional economic incentives, and standard care with oral ART (step 1). Participants who had an HIV-1 RNA level of 200 copies per mill

Cerebral toxoplasmosis is one of the most common opportunistic infections among AIDS patients. Clinical and neuroimaging manifestations are diverse and non-specific, resulting in frequent delayed diagnosis and even misdiagnosis, leading to neurological impairment, coma, and death. In addition to clinical and serological examinations, multimodal neuroimaging is indispensable for early diagnosis and subsequent treatment evaluation. Indeed, functional magnetic resonance imaging technologies and positron emission tomography provide complementary information for early diagnosis and treatment, which

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the prevalence of human pegivirus (HPgV) in SARS-CoV-2-positive patients within the context of viral co-infections that may modulate COVID-19 outcomes and assesses whether HPgV co-infection is associated with COVID-19 severity. HPgV is a widely circulating but rarely monitored human virus with documented immunomodulatory effects in other viral infections, including HIV and Ebola. While HPgV prevalence is low in the general U.S. population (1-2%), it rises markedly in the setting of chronic viral co-infections, particularly HIV (15-40%). Given its immunologic

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 Prevention Network (CoVPN) co-conducted six COVID-19 phase 3 vaccine efficacy (VE) trials that featured harmonized immunogenicity analyses using validated antibody assays. These trials enabled a uniquely comprehensive characterization of immunogenicity produced by different vaccine platforms and regimens in individuals with and without prior SARS-CoV-2 acquisition.
METHODS: Comparisons of serum binding antibody concentration and serum neutralization antibody ID50 titers were performed across three strata: vaccine immunity (vaccination in SARS-CoV-2-naïve individuals),

BACKGROUND: Identification of the microorganisms causing infection in children with central nervous system infection is important. Conventional cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tests may provide limited pathogen detection. CSF metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) may provide broader pathogen detection in a single assay.
METHODS: Results of CSF mNGS testing performed at Mayo Clinic on patients and nonpatients between January 2024 and June 2025 were retrospectively analyzed. The subcohort of children treated at Mayo Clinic was analyzed to assess test performance as compared with conventional

OBJECTIVE: It is known that between 5-10% of individuals vaccinated against hepatitis B virus (HBV) do not develop protective antibody levels. Several factors negatively influence the immune response. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the immunological response to HBV vaccination in at-risk populations and analyze its variation according to the type of vaccination schedule (primary vaccination or booster dose), age, sex, and risk group.
METHODS: A longitudinal descriptive study was conducted on patients between 04/11/2021-15/06/2023 at the Preventive Medicine vaccination clinic at Hospita

BACKGROUND: Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is an angioproliferative tumor caused by Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV) that occurs in people with HIV. Concurrent KSHV-associated diseases (KAD), including multicentric Castleman disease, primary effusion lymphoma, and KSHV-associated inflammatory cytokine syndrome may modify KS biology and impact clinical outcomes. Transcriptomic profiling of archival KS tissue enables investigation of molecular heterogeneity associated with these overlapping disease states. METHODS: Archival formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) KS skin biopsies from 42 patients with HIV

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Canadian Blood Services implemented a re-entry programme in 2014. Donors deferred because of false-reactive or indeterminate screening tests can provide a specimen for re-entry testing 6 months after their initial test, and resume donating if they test negative for all infectious markers. We evaluated the impact of the programme on donor return and retention, and assessed factors associated with reactive results upon re-entry testing.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using extracted data from our donor database, we followed up donors who tested false-reactive for hepatitis B

OBJECTIVES: The proportion of foreigners among newly diagnosed people with HIV in Taiwan has steadily increased. We evaluated HIV care quality indices among foreigners with HIV (FWH) and explored associated factors.
METHODS: FWH who first sought care at 10 Taiwanese hospitals between 2017 and 2023 were included. Information on AIDS at presentation, antiretroviral therapy (ART) prescription, care retention, and viral suppression was collected. Factors associated with these indices were analyzed using logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards models.
RESULTS: We included 144 FWH (median

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review various types of movement disorders associated with common tropical infectious diseases produced by viruses, bacteria, rickettsia, protozoa and/or parasites. At times, the offending organism almost exclusively affects the central nervous system (CNS) without any significant systemic manifestations, as in neurocysticercosis. RECENT FINDINGS: Movement disorders almost invariably result from direct invasion of the CNS by the offending organism. CNS involvement may occur as a result of brain edema, electrolyte abnormalities, hypoxia, ischemia, haemorrhage, liver and ki

Febrile neutropenia (FN) is a medical emergency typically seen in immunocompromised patients with neutrophil counts below 500 cells/µL. It is often associated with chemotherapy, hematologic malignancy, and advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Severe neutropenia in a low-level viremia and preserved CD4 T-helper cell (CD4) is uncommon and warrants evaluation for alternative etiologies. A 68-year-old man with HIV presented with fever and an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) of zero, without recent chemotherapy or other known myelosuppressive medications. Gram-negative bacteremia w

IMPORTANCE: Injection drug use is a major risk factor for both hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and incarceration. The high volume and rapid turnover of individuals in jails make this setting a critical access point for hepatitis C elimination among people who inject drugs, with potential downstream benefits for reducing community transmission.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the health benefits, costs, and cost-effectiveness of jail-based HCV interventions.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cost-effectiveness analysis extended a dynamic network simulation model of HCV transmission through inj

INTRODUCTION: Despite the availability of curative treatments, hepatitis C diagnosis and treatment coverage is suboptimal globally with few countries on track to achieve the WHO's 2030 elimination targets. In 2022, an estimated 50 million people were living with hepatitis C, with 1 million new infections annually. Most people living with hepatitis C reside in low- and middle-income countries, and people who inject drugs are disproportionately affected by hepatitis C.Continuing simplification of diagnostic pathways and treatment care models is required to improve linkage to care and reduce cost

INTRODUCTION: The majority of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection diagnoses in France involve migrant populations, who face challenges in navigating healthcare systems. Community associations that liaise with migrant populations are well placed to screen for these viruses and provide post-screening support. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of community association-based HIV, HBV and HCV screening campaigns and support in migrant populations in France.
