Factors Correlating Outcome in Young Infants With Congenital Muscular Torticollis.

PURPOSE: No previous study using follow-up ultrasonography for evaluating the factors associated with the successful regression of congenital muscular torticollis in young infants has been published. This study aimed to assess clinical factors and sonographic features potentially influencing regression in patients with congenital muscular torticollis. METHODS: From January 2010 to December 2012, 80 infants underwent neck ultrasonography because of clinical suspicion of congenital muscular torticollis. We statistically analysed the correlation between complete resolution and clinicosonographic

Bilateral Pallidotomy for Cervical Dystonia After Failed Selective Peripheral Denervation.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the utility of pallidotomy for cervical dystonia after failed selective peripheral denervation. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 36-year-old man presented with cervical dystonia with limited range of motion of the left shoulder, particularly in abduction. His Tsui score was 8. Owing to the ineffectiveness of botulinum toxin injection, he underwent selective peripheral denervation with an unsatisfactory outcome, with a postoperative Tsui score of 6. Simultaneous bilateral pallidotomy was performed with local anesthesia 1 year after the initial surgery. The day after the pallidot

Skeletal response to diet with soya bean seeds used as primary source of protein in growing broiler chickens.

The study was conducted using 120 commercial broiler chicks (Ross 308) randomly allocated to two experimental groups. The experimental diets, differing only in protein source, either solvent-extracted soya bean meal (SBM) or traditional (non-genetically modified) full-fat soya bean seeds (FFS), were prepared using practical corn-based formulation designed to meet nutritional requirements of broilers. Performance parameters were monitored weekly. Also, the subjects were evaluated daily for overt changes in skeletal anatomy and gait physiology. Randomly selected chickens from each group (seven m

The Diversity of the Clinical Phenotypes in Patients With Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva.

BACKGROUND: The clinical presentation, phenotypic characterization and natural history of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) are diverse and the natural history of the disease is, to a certain extent, different from one patient to another. METHODS: In a series of 11 patients (eight girls and three boys, aged 0 - 16 years), variable clinical presentations were the landmarks of these patients. At birth, all of our patients manifested short great toes in a valgus position. Marfan syndrome was the suggested diagnosis in three children aged 3 - 8 years and in two pre-adult patients. Clini

Botulinum Toxin Treatment of Cervical Dystonia.

The use of botulinum toxin for the treatment of cervical dystonia (CD) was first reported in 1985. Since then, four commercially available formulations have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in CD, including three botulinum toxin A formulations and one botulinum toxin B formulation. Recent clinical trials have generally demonstrated good efficacy and tolerability. Commonly reported side effects include dysphagia, muscle weakness, and dry mouth. Secondary nonresponse may develop, but the relationship of detected antibodies to clinical responsiveness remains unclear.

A Rare Cervical Dystonia Mimic in Adults: Congenital Muscular Torticollis (Fibromatosis colli), a Follow-up.

Neglected or undiagnosed congenital muscular torticollis in adults is quite rare, although it is the third most common congenital deformity in the newborn (1). When left untreated at an early age, deficits in lateral and rotational range of motion can occur along with irreversible facial and skeletal deformities that develop over time. Subtle cases can go unnoticed until early adulthood, with predominant fibrotic replacement in the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) making physical therapy and chemodenervation mostly ineffective. Surgical intervention, in these cases, can prove effective in alleviating

An unusual case of an oesophageal foreign body presenting as torticollis.

Oesophageal foreign bodies (FBs) are commonly encountered in an otolaryngology setting. The majority of such cases remain in the paediatric population, where obtaining an accurate history of events is challenging. Oesophageal FBs present in a variety of ways other than dysphagia, which may result in delayed presentation, diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Where an ingested FB is a battery, early removal is advocated owing to the potential for significant complications, a problem highlighted by a patient safety alert issued by NHS England. A common paediatric presentation, torticollis has a mu

Bilateral Lower Sternocleidomastoid Botulinum Toxin Injections to Address Refractory Anterocollis.

Anterocollis is a type of cervical dystonia characterized by simultaneous and repetitive antagonist muscles contractions, resulting in abnormal neck flexion. It was described with a frequency of 6.8% from 399 patients with diagnosis of cervical dystonia and usually coexists with torticollis and/or laterocollis, as mixed cervical dystonia patterns. Botulinum toxin is usually a practical and effective treatment for cervical dystonia. The target muscles to inject in anterocollis are usually sternocleidomastoid and scalene muscles. There is also a case report suggesting longus collis involvement.

Grisel's syndrome, a rare cause of anomalous head posture in children: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Anomalous head posture (AHP) or torticollis is a relatively common condition in children. Torticollis is not a diagnosis, but it is a sign of underlying disease. Grisel's syndrome (GS) is a rare condition of uncertain etiology characterized by a nontraumatic atlanto-axial subluxation (AAS), secondary to an infection in the head and neck region. It has not been considered, in ophthalmological papers, as a possible cause of AHP. CASE PRESENTATION: A case of AAS secondary to an otitis media is studied. The children showed neck pain, head tilt, and reduction in neck mobility. The pati

Effectiveness of Surgical Release in Patients With Neglected Congenital Muscular Torticollis According to Age at the Time of Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the correlation between change in spinal deformities after surgical release and age at the time of surgery, and the effectiveness of surgical release in patients with neglected congenital muscular torticollis (CMT). METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 46 subjects with neglected CMT who had undergone surgical release at age ≥5 years at a tertiary medical center between January 2009 and January 2014. Spinal deformities were measured on anteroposterior plain radiographs of the cervical and whole spine, both preoperatively and postoperatively, to assess 3 parameters:

The Efficacy of Topiramate in Benign Paroxysmal Torticollis of Infancy: Report of Four Cases.

Benign paroxysmal torticollis (BPT) is a rare paroxysmal dyskinesia and 1 of the childhood periodic syndromes presenting with recurrent stereotypic episodes of torticollis, usually accompanied with some of the nonheadache features of migraine such as vomiting and ataxia. Although the nature of BPT may seem benign, its recurrent episodes can mimic attacks of epilepsy and expose the infant to unnecessary hospitalization and adverse effects of inappropriate medications. There is no approved medication for the disease, but a few studies have suggested that cyproheptadine is useful. However, use of

The Genetics of Benign Paroxysmal Torticollis of Infancy: Is There an Association With Mutations in the CACNA1A Gene?

Benign paroxysmal torticollis of infancy is an unusual movement disorder, often accompanied by a family history of migraine. Some benign paroxysmal torticollis cases are associated with CACNA1A mutations. The authors sought to determine the frequency of CACNA1A mutations in benign paroxysmal torticollis by testing 8 children and their parents and by searching the literature for benign paroxysmal torticollis cases with accompanying CACNA1A mutations or other disorders linked to the same gene. In our 8 benign paroxysmal torticollis cases, the authors found 3 different polymorphisms, but no patho
