Patients with spinal metastasis often benefit from surgical intervention for debulking to improve neurologic deficits, reduce spinal cord or root compression, and ameliorate pain. Traditionally, large, open fusions have been used to achieve adequate decompression of neural structures. These types of interventions are frequently associated with significant blood loss, prolonged hospitalizations, and increased risk of surgery-related complications, which can delay postoperative chemotherapy and radiation therapies. Endoscopic spine approaches allow access to the spinal cord and nerve roots with

Noonan syndrome with multiple lentigines (NSML) is an allelic variant of Noonan syndrome (NS), which can exhibit multisystemic features, including sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and skeletal anomalies. We report on a patient with this rare condition who developed an uncommon syndromic feature of severe lordoscoliosis requiring surgical intervention, whose comorbidities complicated the perioperative course, including the preclusion of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and relative contraindication to transcranial motor evoked potentials (TcMEPs). We discuss the use of preoperative computed to

Thoracic spine fracture-dislocations are typically the product of high-energy injuries, and their neurological sequelae are usually devastating. For a patient to experience such an injury from a minor trauma and preserve all neurological function is rare and is often credited to the paradoxical decompression effect that follows a traumatic fracture of the posterior elements of the spine. This is a case of a 31-year-old female patient who suffered a severe thoracic spine fracture-dislocation from a low-energy fall from a manually operated "merry-go-round" in a kids' park. Despite the apparent i

CONTEXT: Low bone density is common among lumbar fusion patients and increases the risks of pseudarthrosis, hardware failure, and revision. Teriparatide improves bone mass and fusion in osteoporosis, but its benefit in osteopenia or normal bone remains uncertain.
AIMS: To evaluate the association between teriparatide exposure and (1) postoperative complications, (2) 90-day readmission, and (3) 2-year reoperation, stratified by bone health status (osteoporotic, osteopenic, and normal) in patients undergoing single-level lumbar fusion.
SETTING AND DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study using the

BACKGROUND: Mental health concerns are increasingly common in patients undergoing lumbar spine fusion. Recent studies have suggested that poor mental health leads to a greater risk of suboptimal recovery. However, few studies have investigated cost and resource allocation associated with patients with poor mental health. Therefore, this study was designed to understand how self-reported mental health, assessed by the PROMIS-10 Global Mental Health T-score (MHT), was associated with both hospital costs and post discharge resource utilization.
METHODS: A total of 1,211 patients that underwent 1

INTRODUCTION: Posterior lumbar fusion is a widely used technique for stabilizing the lumbar spine, yet complications such as cranial facet violations, increased blood loss, and soft tissue trauma have prompted interest in minimally invasive alternatives. Transfacet screw fixation has emerged as a promising technique, offering advantages such as reduced surgical morbidity, lower risk of adjacent segment degeneration, and greater biomechanical stability in specific patient populations. This study investigates the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing one- or two-level lumbar fusion using tran

PURPOSE: Determine the association between self-reported physical function—measured using the PROMIS-10 Physical Function T-Score (PFT)—and outcomes up to 1 year following lumbar fusion. METHODS: This retrospective study focused on patients undergoing elective single or two level lumbar fusion. Patients were grouped by their electronically collected PFT score and classified as having below average function (BA), average function (A), or above average function (AA). Multivariate regression analyses were used to determine the associative relationships between the PFT and postoperative complicati

INTRODUCTION: Annual reports from the Norwegian Registry for Spine Surgery (NORspine) suggest notable inter-hospital variation in patient-reported outcomes after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for radiculopathy.
RESARCH QUESTION: Do unadjusted comparisons not account for differences in case mix between institutions?
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This multicenter observational cohort study analyzed data from 7832 patients undergoing ACDF for cervical radiculopathy in Norway between 2014 and 2023. Risk factors for poor outcome were identified by multivariate logistic regression. Outcom

This radiographic analysis aimed to evaluate the differences in the anatomical position of the bowel relative to the lateral surgical corridor and the spine between prone and supine positions. Retroperitoneal transpsoas lateral lumbar interbody fusion can be performed in the prone position, allowing simultaneous lateral and posterior spinal access without repositioning; however, bowel positional changes associated with this approach have not been well characterized. From January 2020 to December 2024, 13 patients who underwent computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy in the prone position with i

Early onset scoliosis (EOS) presents a unique challenge due to its potential to compromise thoracic growth and pulmonary development during childhood. Growth rod instrumentation offers a fusion-sparing approach that controls deformity while allowing spinal and thoracic expansion. This case series describes four children aged eight to 10 years with varying etiologies of EOS who underwent growth rod application followed by scheduled distraction procedures. Clinical records and radiographic findings were reviewed to document deformity magnitude, surgical intervention, serial lengthenings, and fol

High-grade spondylolisthesis at the L5/S1 level presents significant surgical challenges due to marked instability and neural compression. Traditional fusion techniques often need to extend beyond the index level to achieve stable fixation. Moreover, a second surgery is sometimes required to restore mobility at the additionally instrumented segments. We present a case of a 19-year-old female with severe lumbar and bilateral sciatic pain caused by a Meyerding grade III L5/S1 spondylolisthesis. The patient underwent a laminectomy and bilateral L5 nerve root decompression, followed by transsacral

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive posterior cervical fixation remains technically challenging due to narrow pedicle dimensions and proximity to neurovascular structures. This multicenter study evaluates the accuracy and safety of a dedicated minimally invasive cervical pedicle screw-rod system with 3D navigation guidance.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Can minimally invasive cervical pedicle screw placement achieve accuracy rates comparable to open techniques while maintaining patient safety?
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective multicenter analysis of 46 patients (60.7 ± 17.4 years) undergoing percutaneo

Irreducible atlantoaxial dislocation is a challenging condition for spine surgeons and carries a particularly high risk of postoperative infection due to its trans-oral approach for peri-odontoid soft tissue release. Conventional antibacterial implant coatings are limited by rapid burst release, leading to short-term efficacy and potential cytotoxicity. To address this, we developed a composite coating of silver nanoparticle-decorated ZIF-8 (AgZ) within a tunable methacrylate gelatin (GelMA) and silk fibroin (SF) matrix (AgZ/GelSF) for 3D-printed Ti-6Al-4V fusion cages. The AgZ nanocomposite e

PURPOSE: Although glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GRAs) are commonly used for diabetes mellitus, they are also increasingly used for weight loss. However, the impact of these medications taken solely for weight-loss on surgical outcomes has been minimally studied. The purpose of this study was to compare postoperative outcomes after lumbar fusion between patients taking (GRAs) for weight loss versus patients not taking these medications. METHODS: All adults without diabetes mellitus undergoing posterolateral decompression and fusion (PLDF) or transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (
