BACKGROUND: Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality among critically ill patients. In the intensive care unit (ICU), invasive candidiasis (IC), invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA), and Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PjP) represent the most prevalent and clinically relevant fungal diseases. Their diagnosis is often hampered by nonspecific clinical and radiological findings, delayed or negative cultures, and suboptimal performance of fungal biomarkers in this population. As a result, antifungal treatment strategies in the ICU must balance the need for

BACKGROUND: Candidozyma auris is an emerging multidrug-resistant pathogen that frequently colonises hospitalised patients and can cause invasive disease. Traditional tools, such as the Candida score, perform poorly in this setting. We aimed to externally validate and refine a clinical prediction model for C auris candidaemia among colonised patients in the intensive care unit (ICU).
METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of prospectively and systematically collected cohort data from ICUs in two tertiary-care hospitals in Valencia, Spain, to predict candidaemia among adult C auris-colo

BACKGROUND: Candida albicans is a human opportunistic pathogen responsible for superficial and invasive candidiasis. It is one of the emerging nosocomial pathogens infecting immunocompromised and debilitated individuals, increasing the rate of secondary infections in diseases like HIV. The emerging drug resistance among species is making treatment cumbersome. Also, biofilm-forming ability of C. albicans is one of the primary factors contributing to its virulence as its blocks the penetration of drugs, therefore leading to drug inefficacy. BACKGROUND: Candida urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a growing public health challenge in clinical practice. Immunologic and physiological changes that occur in pregnancy make pregnant women more prone to UTIs. However, in resource-constrained settings like Kenya, where healthcare systems are underfunded and microbiology laboratories are inadequate, epidemiological data to inform infection prevention interventions for Candida UTI-associated complications in pregnancy are limited. In this study, we determined the prevalence of Candida UTI, the antifungal susceptibility of isolates, and facto

BACKGROUND: Oral, oropharyngeal, and esophageal candidiasis are common forms of mucosal candidiasis (MC) in people living with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (PLWHA). Despite differences in infection sites, oral, oropharyngeal, and esophageal candidiasis share common pathophysiological mechanisms, including etiologic agents, host susceptibility, and antibiotic use. Identifying prevalence and risk factors associated with these types of candidiasis in this population enables clinicians to manage these infections across the affected mucosal sites effectively.

Background: Respiratory tract candidiasis, primarily caused by Candida species, is a prevalent opportunistic fungal infection in individuals with HIV/AIDS. A high HIV viral load is considered a significant risk factor for developing respiratory fungal infection. This study aimed to identify the yeast species isolated from sputum samples of HIV-positive and HIV-negative adults, determine their antifungal susceptibility patterns, and investigate associated risk factors. Methods: A hospital-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted from March to May 2022. Sputum samples were collected

INTRODUCTION: HIV infection continues to be a major contributor to morbidity and mortality in developing countries, including the Republic of the Congo. The progression of the infection to advanced stages is influenced by various factors such as viral genetics, host immune responses variation, body mass index (BMI), treatment interruption or lack of treatment access. This study describes the characteristics of HIV patients on ART and identifies factors associated with viral load suppression in a Congolese urban population. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted from June to July 202

BACKGROUND: Oral candidiasis remains a prevalent opportunistic infection in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), particularly in low-resource settings. The increasing prevalence of non-albicans Candida species and widespread resistance to commonly used azole antifungals present a major therapeutic challenge. This study investigated the prevalence and azole antifungal susceptibility patterns of Candida (C) species isolated from people living with HIV in southeast Nigeria. METHODS: A total of 514 oral swab samples were collected fro

OBJECTIVES: Despite the significant improvement in survival rates due to antiretroviral therapy, opportunistic infections continue to pose a major health risk for individuals living with HIV. As a key anatomical intersection of the upper respiratory and digestive tracts, the pharyngeal microbiome during HIV infection remains poorly characterized. This study aimed to compare the composition of bacterial and fungal communities in the pharynx between HIV-infected individuals and healthy controls, and to investigate their association with host immune status. METHODS: Throat swab samples were colle

Non-optimal vaginal bacteriomes, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and sexually transmitted infections have been associated with increased risk of HIV acquisition in multiple clinical studies. However, there are still major gaps in our understanding of the role of the vaginal microbiome in HIV acquisition risk and non-bacterial components of the vaginal microbiome are not well characterised. Additionally, the functional interactions between the vaginal microbiome and its host that can result in increased risk of HIV acquisition are not fully understood. Better vaginal microbiome diagnostics and therap

OBJECTIVES: Oral manifestations often reflect underlying immune suppression and disease progression. These lesions can profoundly affect the quality of life, leading to pain, difficulty in eating, and social stigma. In the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) population living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), additional sociobehavioral factors, such as discrimination, mental health challenges, and barriers to healthcare access, may exacerbate oral health issues.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of oral soft tissue lesi
