BACKGROUND: Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is a life-threatening and severe disease in immunocompromised hosts. A synergistic regimen based on the combination of sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (SMX-TMP) with caspofungin and glucocorticosteroids (GCSs) may be a potential first-line therapy for PJP. Therefore, it is important to explore the efficacy and safety of this synergistic therapy for treating non-HIV-related PJP patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the data of 38 patients with non-HIV-related PJP at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University. Patients we

BACKGROUND: Studies on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in children living with HIV (CLHIV) are limited due to the small population and low accession rate of ART.
METHODS: All 0-14-year-old CLHIV admitted to the Ganzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention from January 2006 to June 2023 were included retrospectively. The information of treatment regimens, disease progression, and laboratory tests of the patients under ART were used to explore the outcomes and impacts of long-term ART. The normality of all the data was tested by the Shapiro-Wilk test.
RESULTS: From 2006 to 2023, 18 CLHIV wer

OBJECTIVE: Long-term steroid use increases the risk of developing Pneumocystis pneumonia (PcP), but there are limited reports on the relation of long-term steroid and PcP mortality.
METHODS: Retrospective multicenter study to identify risk factors for PcP mortality, including average steroid dose before the first visit for PcP in non-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-PcP patients. We generated receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for 90-day all-cause mortality and the mean daily steroid dose per unit body weight in the preceding 10 to 90 days in 10-day increments. Patients were dic

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pneumocystis jirovecii (PJP) pneumonia is a serious life-threatening condition in immunocompromised individuals and is often associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) + patients. We describe a case of PJP pneumonia which provided a diagnostic challenge in a patient who presented with no known risk factors leading to a delay in initiation of appropriate antibiotic therapy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old previously healthy white/Caucasian male presented with subacute hypoxic respiratory failure due to multifocal pneumonia with diffuse bilateral ground gla

Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PjP) poses a serious risk to individuals with compromised immune systems, such as individuals with HIV/AIDS or undergoing immunosuppressive therapies for cancer or solid organ transplants. Severe PjP triggers excessive lung inflammation, resulting in lung function decline and consequential alveolar damage, potentially culminating in acute respiratory distress syndrome. Non-HIV patients face a 30-60%mortality rate, emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of inflammatory responses in PjP. Prior research emphasized macrophages in Pneumocystis infections,

BACKGROUND: The performance of chest x-ray (CXR) features for Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) diagnosis has been evaluated in small studies. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to describe CXR changes in adults with HIV-associated laboratory-confirmed PCP, comparing these with non-PCP respiratory disease.
METHODS: We searched databases for studies reporting CXR changes in people >15 years old with HIV and laboratory-confirmed PCP and those with non-PCP respiratory disease. CXR features were grouped using consensus terms. Proportions were pooled and odds ratios (ORs) generated usin

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplantation has emerged as the most effective treatment for patients with uremia. Advances in immunosuppressant medications have significantly reduced the risk of rejection. However, a notable increase in opportunistic infections, such as Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP), demands special attention in clinical practice. Our study aims to evaluate risk factors and identify predictive markers associated with PJP in kidney transplantation recipients.
METHODS: We conducted a case-control study (1:2 ratio) involving kidney transplant recipients with and without PJP, mat

INTRODUCTION: Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is a life-threatening infection in immunocompromised individuals. Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) has brought significant survival benefit in lung cancer patients. Although the few studies showed there was high mortality in PJP patients with ICI use, these studies had no comparative control groups.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted to compare the mortality in PJP patients with lung cancer between those treated with ICI and a concurrent control group treated without ICI.
RESULTS: A total number of 20 non-human immunodeficiency

The diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in its late stages, also known as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), leads to increased morbidity and mortality. This is mostly due to the time given for opportunistic infections to arise, which present with their own complications. In this case report, we present an otherwise healthy 38-year-old male, who presented with general systemic symptoms and was later found to have HIV and AIDS, ultimately resulting in his death during this hospital admission. This case report will discuss HIV-associated opportunistic infections, focusing mor
