Chronic low back pain due to impingement of two adjacent spinous processes has been called Baastrup's disease. The diagnosis can be confirmed by interspinous infiltration of local anesthetic. However, little evidence regarding its pathology and treatment exists. Considering previous reports and our cases, three pathologies including impingement caused by contact between two adjacent spinous processes, inflammation and synovitis at the interspinous ligament, and inflammation and synovitis in the tissue surrounding the interspinous area are needed to be addressed. Conservative treatment with an

Aim and objective Low back pain (LBP) is increasingly prevalent among pediatric patients but often lacks a definitive diagnosis. Kissing Spine Syndrome (KSS), or Baastrup's Disease, is well-described in adults but understudied in children. This study characterizes the clinical and radiographic features of pediatric and adolescent patients with LBP suggestive of KSS. Methods We conducted a retrospective comparative study, wherein we reviewed 131 patients aged 10-22 years presenting with LBP to a pediatric orthopedic clinic in 2021. Inclusion criteria were lumbar spine radiographs and clinical e

Objectives: To investigate whether preservation of the posterior elements protects the spine from degeneration and improves postoperative symptoms in lumbar spine laminoplasty. Methods: Eighty-five consecutive patients who underwent lumbar spine laminoplasty were retrospectively reviewed. They were non-randomly stratified into two groups, the posterior elements resection (R) group and the preservation (P) group, and they were followed for two years after surgery. We radiographically analyzed the conditions of the spine and intervertebral disc (IVD) two years after surgery. The Japanese Orthopa

The term overriding spinous processes (ORSPs), commonly known as "kissing spine syndrome," refers to a skeletal abnormality in horses that is characterized by the narrowing (<4 mm) of the interspinous space and touching or overlapping of the spinous processes (SPs). This condition primarily affects the mid- and caudal thoracic vertebrae; however, ORSP can also affect the lumbar SPs. In the veterinary community, kissing spine is widely recognized as a common condition in sport horses, as it is often associated with chronic back pain and contributes to poor performance. Despite its significant c

INTRODUCTION: Although kissing spine syndrome in the lumbar spinal region is a relatively common condition in older adults, no study examining its biomechanical characteristics has been reported. We hypothesized that kissing of the spinous processes during extension causes an increase in the flexural rigidity of the spine and significantly limits the deformation behavior of extension, which in turn might cause lower back pain.
METHODS: Three test models (human cadavers A, B, and C) were prepared by removing supraspinal/interspinous ligaments between L4 and L5. The dental resin was attached to

Baastrup's disease (BD), commonly known as "kissing spine syndrome," presents a significant cause of lower back pain, predominantly affecting the lumbar region. Diagnosis is often challenging due to its symptomatology and radiographic presentation. Herein, we present a case series demonstrating the utility of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) in diagnosing BD accurately, particularly in oncologic settings where it may mimic metastatic lesions. Through a series of cases, we demonstrate the distinctive imaging features of BD on 18F-FDG PET/C

BACKGROUND: Adverse events of the fractured vertebra (AEFV) post-percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) can lead to recurrent pain and neurological damage, which considerably affect the prognosis of patients and the quality of life. This study aimed to analyze the risk factors of AEFV and develop and select the optimal risk prediction model for AEFV to provide guidance for the prevention of this condition and enhancement of clinical outcomes.
METHODS: This work included 383 patients with primary osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) who underwent PKP. The patients were grouped based on t

CASE: A patient presented with midline back pain radiating into the left lower extremity. Magnetic Resonance images revealed an abnormal midline dorsal structure described as a facet cyst. Rupture was attempted by spinal needle under fluoroscopic guidance. His pain returned in less than 2 weeks. Further study of the images showed the structure was more medial and cephalad than typical facet cysts, leading to a revised diagnosis of Baastrup disease. The cyst was surgically removed by minimally invasive techniques; an uninstrumented spinal arthrodesis was performed.
CONCLUSION: Baastrup disease

Baastrup's disease represents a frequent, primarily radiological phenomenon on imaging studies of the spine. Nevertheless, it can present as a rare, symptomatically relevant pathology that implies a therapeutic consequence. Yet, there is little evidence and agreement on a consistent treatment strategy in the current literature. Here, we present the case of a 46-year-old man who presented with chronic, persistent midline back pain that was relieved by flexion and aggravated by spinal extension. Extensive imaging studies, including computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and single-phot

Back pain is a common complaint, clinical finding and performance limiting factor in sport horses. This study sought to gather current veterinary trends in the diagnosis, treatment and management of primary equine back pain in the United States. A 22 question survey was distributed electronically to equine practitioners through AAEP and ACVSMR listservs and through closed social media groups. The survey was open from April 20, 2022 to July 5, 2022. Responses were analyzed using Microsoft excel pivot tables. Ninety-seven survey responses were obtained and analyzed. Respondents reported the clin

We report the MDP SPECT/CT findings of Baastrup disease in the interspinal region of L4 to L5 in a 76-year-old woman with a history of lung cancer. Baastrup disease, also known as "kissing" spine, is characterized by close contact of adjacent spinous processes with resultant enlargement, flattening, and reactive sclerosis of apposing interspinous surfaces. Knowledge regarding the appearance of Baastrup disease on 99mTc-MDP SPECT/CT is important to distinguish it from spinal bone metastasis.

Baastrup's disease is a rare, often misdiagnosed, and causes back pain in children. It is characterized by degenerative changes of both spinous processes and interspinous soft tissues between two adjacent vertebrae. Repetitive spinal movements in the sagittal plane predispose injury to posterior elements of the spine. Chronic flexion and extension strain the interspinous ligament, causing the neighboring spinous processes to adjoin. Patients typically report midline back pain in the lumbar region, which radiates both cephalad and caudad but not laterally. Pain is aggravated by extension and pa

Case-control studies by examining the lumbar spine computed tomography (CT) findings focusing on the spinous processes."Passing spine" was defined as a lumbar degenerative change observed on CT images. In contrast, kissing spine, which is also an image finding, has been acknowledged as an established clinical condition. Therefore, we compared the passing spine group and the kissing spine group to investigate whether the 2 groups belong to a similar disease group; this would help explain the clinical and imaging characteristics of patients with passing spine.Previous studies have described the

Equine chronic back pain (CBP) has been linked to different pathologic processes, which directly or indirectly involve spinal structures. Thus, making diagnosis and management very challenging with most horses with the condition recommended for early retirement from athletic activity. This study described the spinal cord lesions and the development of reactive microgliosis and astrocytosis in the spinal cords of horse with CBP. Thoracolumbar spinal cord segments from three horses euthanized because of unresolved CBP were dissected and grossly and histopathologically examined. The expression of

Baastrup's disease is a rare condition of the vertebral column often misdiagnosed and wrongly treated due to poor knowledge, characterized by low back pain arising from the close approximation of adjacent posterior spinous processes and resultant degenerative changes. Diagnosis rests on clinical examination and detailed imaging studies. Proposed therapies include conservative treatment, percutaneous infiltrations or surgical therapies. We present the case of a 31-year-old man with persistent chronic lumbago for several years. In whom, the diagnosis of Baastrup's disease was high suspected clin

Baastrup's disease, known colloquially as "kissing spine disease", is a degenerative process, most commonly occurring in the lumbar spine, in which adjacent spinous processes closely approximate or even touch (Filippiadis et al. in Insights Imaging. https://doi.org/10.1007/s13244-014-0376-7, 2015). We present the case of an 86-year-old woman presenting with left low back, hip, and anterolateral thigh pain. Magnetic resonance imaging noted an approximation of the L2/3 spinous processes, with degeneration of the vertebral processes. This article is based on previously conducted studies and does

BACKGROUND: Baastrup disease (BD) is characterized by the degenerative changes of spinous processes and interspinous soft tissues. It is more common among aged persons. This disorder is a relatively common cause of low back pain. Its incidence is underestimated. A few studies have investigated BD epidemiology and proposed treatment efficacy. The aim of this paper is to establish impact and outcome evaluations of managing the patients with Baastrup disease who have been treated by implementing of floating interlaminar device (FID).

Reports of Baastrup disease have been underrepresented in the medical literature. Therefore, the current comprehensive review was performed by searching standard search engines using the terms "Baastrup's," "disease," "lumbar," "interspinous bursitis," and "kissing spine disease." Baastrup disease appears to be more common than once believed. Baastrup disease is associated with other degenerative disease processes of the spine that could potentially lead a physician to perform unnecessary surgery. Appreciation of this disease and identification on imaging can improve diagnosis and appropriate
